The Sam Barnett Quintet

Emerging Artist of TJ Saxophones

The world loves competitions these days, and it seems people aren't interested unless there are judges whirling round in big red chairs, but music really isn't like that. The latest amazing group of jazz talent emerging from the top colleges work and play together, and we are proud to present a three-night festival to demonstrate that the whole is even greater than the sum of the parts. Collaboration, not competition. Very jazz...

This weekend, Toulouse Lautrec will feature three ensembles, involving several BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year participants and their colleagues, in their natural habitat – playing together, performing their music, their way. Welcome to the future.

Produced by Jason Lyon

On the closing night of our summer festival - a celebration of award-winning young jazz talent and a chance to hear the future with The Sam Barnett Quintet.

Sam Barnett is a young musician from London playing Saxophone, Piano and composes his own original music. Currently studying at The Royal Academy of Music Junior Jazz Academy. He is sponsored by Trevor James Saxophones as their first “Emerging Artist” playing their Signature Custom Raw Alto and Tenor saxes.

Sam is an EMI Music Sound Foundation award holder and won the Youth Category of the Mayor of London’s Gigs competition in 2013. He trained with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, Tomorrow’s Warriors and for the last two summers he has been training at Berklee College of Music in Valencia and Boston where he was honoured to be awarded a scholarship for their undergraduate programme.

Recently hailed as one of the finest young players in the UK sharing a stage with Jools Holland & sax supremo Derek Nash.

Sam Barnett - Sax

Lawrence Wilkins - Trumpet

TBC - Piano

Seth Tackaberry - Double Bass

Zoe Pascal - Drums

“The standard of the finalists was incredibly high, making it a herculean task for the judges to select the young winner. It underlines the amazing talent there is in London and I wish big success to Sam.”
Boris Johnson, Mayor of London 2008-2016

“Sam Barnett is one of the finest saxophone players on the scene and he’s only 15! His technical prowess and stage presence is on a level that many seasoned performers are still striving for.”
Dave Silk, Jazz Nights

Not sure if this is eligible, since I organised the festival. But honestly, with hand on heart, the band was excellent and I look forward to working with Sam and co again. Jason Lyon visited Toulouse Lautrec Jazz Club on 21 May 2017
