Join us for an evening of classic big band jazz and swing from across the ages – from Glenn Miller to Duke Ellington, Count Basie to Neal Hefti - as well as contemporary arrangements of classics and even the odd bit of Latin and Funk.
If there’s room, dancing in the aisles is strongly encouraged – or just relax and enjoy the thrill of live big band music in a wonderful setting!
This concert is in memory of Thomas Hanchen. Tommy was a much loved member of SLJO and played trumpet with us for many years. In Tommy's memory, all profits from the gig will be donated to St Christopher's Hospices, who supported Tommy so wonderfully.
Tonight will also feature the British premiere of a new piece of big band music, 'Ships and Waves', by Shuteen Erdenbataar. 'Ships and Waves' is the winner of the 2023 South London Jazz Orchestra Composition Competition, which asked composers to respond to London's diverse musical history. This wondrous ballad featuring a flugelhorn solo and a wild double-time mid-section showcases influences from all corners of jazz history and how they arrived throughout the 20th century in the English capital. Listen out for fiery horns, dreamy chords and some wonderful orchestration. Congratulations to Shuteen on her competition win. We are grateful to the Worshipful Company of Dyers for their support for the competition.

Founded in 2000, the South London Jazz Orchestra is a talented group of amateur musicians, passionate about community music, raising money for good causes, and bringing this music that we love to life We’re a regular at the Edinburgh and Brighton Fringe Festivals and play over 30 gigs per year – from pubs to intimate clubs like Toulouse Lautrec, bandstands and weddings, and supporting runners at mile 11 of the London Marathon!
SLJO is part of South London Community Music, along with South London Symphonic Winds and the London Sings choir. We’re always on the lookout for new members, so get in touch with us if you like what you hear.
T&Cs
1. The ticket holder voluntarily assumes all risks and danger incidental to the event for which the ticket is issued, whether occurring prior, during or after the event. 4. Occasionally, events are cancelled or postponed by the promoter, team, performer or venue for a variety of reasons. If the event is cancelled, please contact us for information on receiving a refund from the responsible party. If the event was moved or rescheduled, the venue or promoter may set refund limitations. It is your responsibility to ascertain the date and time of any rearranged event.
5. The venue reserves the right to refuse admission and may on occasion have to conduct security searches to ensure the safety of the patrons.
6. Every effort to admit latecomers will be made at a suitable break in the event, but admission cannot always be guaranteed.
7. We regret that tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded after purchase.
8. Tickets are sold subject to the venue or promoter's right to alter or vary the programme due to events or circumstances beyond its control without being obliged to refund monies or exchange tickets.
