Rising star drummer Phelan Burgoyne, UK Jazz veteran Martin Speake and award winning Bassist Fred Thomas join forces to explore the œuvre of one modern Jazz`s most iconoclastic figures; pianist Thelonious Monk. The trio will explore classics like Straight, No Chaser and Ruby My Dear along side some of Monks`s lesser known compositions. Expect strong melodies and visceral swing from Burgoyne, Speake and Thomas as they explore the music of Thelonious Monk.

Phelan Burgoyne (1994) is British drummer and composer based between London and Switzerland. He studied with Martin France at the Royal Academy of Music in London and with Jeff Ballard and Jorge Rossy the Jazz Campus Basel. He has performed in many of Europe’s top venues with the likes of Kenny Wheeler, Dave Holland, Jorge Rossy and Bill McHenry.

Born in Barnet, North London in 1958, Martin was inspired to take up the saxophone at the age of 16. From 1977-81, he studied Classical Saxophone at Trinity College of Music, where he was awarded the prestigious Dame Ruth Railton prize for woodwind playing. He first came to public attention as a founder member of the award winning Saxophone Quartet ‘Itchy Fingers’ during the height of the UK’s so called ‘80’s Jazz Revival’ when a host of young musicians including Courtney Pine, Andy Sheppard, Django Bates, Iain Ballamy and the big bands of the Jazz Warriors and Loose Tubes were acclaimed as the leaders of an emerging generation of UK jazz talent.

Born into a musical family in 1985, multi-instrumentalist and composer Fred Thomas studied jazz piano at the Royal Academy of Music. He now performs regularly with a wide variety of creative projects: original and improvised music with his own band, the Fred Thomas Trio, featuring Robin Fincker and Ben Bryant as well as contemporary classical and improvised music projects.

MARTIN SPEAKE - Alto Saxophone
ROB LUFT - GUITAR
FRED THOMAS - DOUBLE BASS
PHELAN BURGOYNE - Drums

“It’s plain to hear why Burgoyne’s reputation has found its present momentum.”
The Guardian (John Fordham)

“Patient and cinematic. The trio are really sitting in a beautiful space that is vast and full of colour”
Larry Grenadier (Brad Mehldau Trio, Paul Motian Band)

“Martin Speake is one of the most interesting and rewarding alto saxophonists now playing jazz on any continent.”
Thomas Conrad - Jazz Times

“Speake's playing can be as enigmatic as his writing. The lyricism and subtlety of both his written and improvised melodies sometimes unfold so gradually that one needs to take a mental step back to absorb it all.”
John Kelman - All About Jazz
