Crimes can be solved in a multitude of ways. The state has a whole array of tools they can use to identify the guilty, from forensic anthropology to forensic zoology, and everything in between. Crimes have been solved using all manner of evidence. The tiniest of pollen particles have secured convictions for serious offences. Even the testimony of a parrot was used to convict a man of murder. Some techniques like DNA analysis and poison testing, which are now cornerstones of crimefighting, were considered almost magical when they first emerged in criminal cases.

But are there any truly magical forensic techniques available to investigators? Is it possible to solve a crime using supernatural powers? Can ghosts solve their own murders? You may have read salacious headlines claiming that psychics have solved murders, but has that evidence ever been subjected to thorough scrutiny by a judge and jury?

So this Month of the Dead, join criminal barrister and ghost lover, Naomi Ryan, for a deep dive into the strange and murky world of CSI: Criminally Supernatural Investigations. Discover the truth behind psychic detectives. Hear tales of ghosts apparently identifying their murderers and decide whether you would convict based on spectral evidence.

Tickets £12.50 including a delightful gin cocktail and a 20% donation to the King's Chaplaincy Trust.

Naomi Ryan

Naomi Ryan is a criminal and public law barrister. After completing the BCL at St Catherine’s College, Oxford, she taught criminal law to undergraduates at St Hilda’s College Oxford and University College London before embarking on her career as a criminal barrister. She both prosecuted and defended before moving to the Civil Service, where she worked for an array of prestigious departments, including the Attorney General’s Office, the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Court of Appeal. She has since returned to her favourite place, the courtroom.

When she isn’t advising legal luminaries, she delivers spirited (!) talks on macabre events in legal history. She is a regular at her beloved London’s Month of the Dead festival and can often be found addressing museums and other legal and supernatural organisations on the spooky and scintillating topic of ghost law. Her favourite subjects include ghosts as witnesses, the prosecution of fraudulent mediums and the High Court’s treatment of demon mongooses called Gef.

A great talk discussing how the Devil’s attempt to destroy sacred spaces ensured their longevity in the myths built around them. Also the punch was wonderful and so was the host.

Sam George really knows her stuff, drawing on theories of the weird and the eerie in a revealing analysis of the representation of werewolves in contemporary myth. Also loved the punch.
