ROB BARRON NEW QUINTET

Contemporary New York style jazz

Continuing the second night of the BopFest Jazz Festival, this imaginative project sees UK pianist Rob Barron writing his own distinctive original arrangements for his new quintet, which is fronted by the unusual combination of guitar and vibraphone, reimagining classic jazz and pop compositions in a style reminiscent of Cedar Walton and current New York pianist David Hazeltine.

Rob's playing evokes a passion for the American tradition and he cites Wynton Kelly and Hank Jones as major influences. As a performer he's played at jazz venues around the world, working with a diverse array of musicians including Phil Woods, Benny Golson and Marlena Shaw. His first album as a leader, "What's In Store", received notable accounts from across the jazz press. He will use his BopFest appearance to debut some new specially prepared original work for the group.

Ian Mann (The Jazz Mann)

Colin Oxley – Guitar
Nat Steele – Vibraphone
Rob Barron – Piano
Jeremy Brown – Bass
Josh Morrison – Drums

The lineup includes one of the world's foremost exponents of jazz guitar, Colin Oxley, who has performed at many of the most prominent jazz international festivals including Montreux, North Sea, Nice and Vienna, as well as residencies in New York and San Francisco. He plays every year at the BBC Proms with the John Wilson Orchestra, and currently tours with international clarinet soloist Julian Bliss. The band is completed with the addition of UK vibraphonist Nat Steele, and American singer Stacey Kent's bassist and drummer respectively, Jeremy Brown and Josh Morrison.

Support tonight comes from visiting German Bud Powell influenced pianist Claus Raible in duo with Swiss based Greek double bassist Giorgos Antoniou, who will be performing in the club's restaurant during dinner before the main act, with food available from 6pm until 7.50pm.
