Late June is English Wine Week and we’re celebrating by raising a glass, or two, of some of our favourites and comparing them to another nascent English drink – whisky. This tasting on 25 June at our London Bridge store will bring together wines from charming Rathfinny, elegant Langham and forceful Gusbourne. The English wine scene is in a thrilling place right with producers hitting their stride, vineyards are now bedded down, expertise is on the up and the wines have never tasted better.

Once the butt of a Scotsman’s joke, English whisky is on the up. Producers like Filey Bay, East London Liquor Co and Wire Works are pushing the limits on flavour and creating whiskies that surprise and delight us.

There’s plenty to compare across these two categories, there’s obvious things like wood management and yeast strains but then there’s a bigger question that both are answering: how do you start an industry from scratch?

These more informal walk-around tastings are a chance to sample a wide range of wines and talk more casually with the people behind them.

Guests at this tasting will get a £5 discount on the night on any purchase in store over £15.

Doors will open at 7:30pm and last pours will be called at 9:15pm. The store will remain open until 9:30pm to finish a final sample and for our customers to make any purchases.

The Whisky Exchange
This June, The Whisky Exchange is hosting a wine festival: The Wine Exchange. While whisky is in our name and is our first love, we are passionate about the full spectrum of drinks and want to celebrate the brilliant wines that we list. Dawn Davies, Master of Wine and The Whisky Exchange’s buying director, has curated a series of events to delve into the range, explore some of the most interesting topics in wine and open up the wide world of wine to as many people as we can. On top of that we will also be opening a collection of wines throughout the month in our central London stores for you to discover.   We know that wine can be intimidating. There are grapes, countries, climates, appellations d’origine contrôlée, oak, vintages and so much more that seems to confuse and occlude rather than to explain and engage. The aim of this festival is that with every bottle we open, we open up the world of wine to more people.   All of our events have education at their heart, and we believe that the best way to learn about wine, whisky or any other drink, is by tasting alongside the passionate people who make these brilliant bottles.   As Davies herself says: “ You knew we were masters of whisky, but did you know we were masters of wine?”
