The Future of Quantum Technologies

Breakthroughs in quantum science enabled the digital revolution that gave us the technologies of today. The next generation of quantum tech is starting to move out of the lab and into the real world; with quantum computing, sensing, imaging, and timing set to disrupt society and the economy. Come along to learn how!

Dr Jess Wade is a Lecturer and Royal Society University Research Fellow at Imperial College London. By day she works on new materials for emerging technologies. By night she works on various projects to better celebrate and support scientists from historically excluded groups.

How to sleep well

We spend around one third of our lives sleeping, and sleep is the key to optimum cognitive, mental, and physical health. In this talk I’ll discuss the importance of sleep and how to get more of it, including evidence-based techniques to improve your sleep patterns and practical tips you can start using tonight to achieve deeper, more restful sleep. Prepare to transform your nights—and your days—with simple, effective habits.

Dr Anna Joyce ⟨she/her⟩ is an academic at Regent’s University London, and an insomnia therapist. Her research focuses on the importance of sleep for cognition and mental health. Outside of work she enjoys poetry, playing piano, crafts, and yoga. She lives in South London with her husband, two children, and a little black cat.

Data and Doctor Doom

This talk will show you how all fictional characters can be explained in thirteen specific components using the best super-villain of all time - Doctor Doom - as an example. It'll demonstrate how this can be done empirically, tell you why on earth you'd want to do that, and finally take audience suggestions for other characters to try it out on.

By day Mark Hibbett is head of information research systems at University of the Arts London, but by night he is the world's leading and only academic expert on Doctor Doom. In a previous life he has performed live on Radio One, had a Record Of The Year in Rolling Stone, an Album Of The Day on 6Music, and lost a lot of money doing Edinburgh Fringe shows.

Any profits from Nerd Nite London go to charity. This year we're partnering with the Dalston branch of the Library of Things, to help foster a new generation of nerds.
