Panel discussion with Christine Brown (Music for Mental Wealth), Sally J Freeman (DevelopHer), Max Owen (Getahead, aka Linguistics) and Jon Salmon (Mental Health Campaigner), moderated by Will Kirby (aka Santero). The panel will be discussing what burnout means to them and how it has impacted their lives, how to find balance, and sharing tips on how to succeed in life and work without risking your health.
Jon Salmon
Jon Salmon has created an award-winning production studio, a pioneer of live video
streaming from some of the largest music festivals and is now the co-founder of
branded entertainment agency Byte Entertainment. Jon lost his father to suicide as a teenager and soon after he started his first job in
1999 was sectioned and admitted to hospital with stress and depression. Unlike his Dad, Jon was able to get the right help including support from him employer and returned to a new job the following year. Jon is now a proud Dad of two and speaks openly about mental health in the hope it will help others and save lives.
Sally J Freeman
Sally is CEO of Addonova, a digital strategy company and Love Live Music UK which supports Musicians to connect their music to global audiences. Sally is also a Founder of DevelopHer, a non-profit of 15K Women In Technology in
London and a regular international conference panelist and speaker. Sally has worked at Glastonbury in Press & Digital for the past 10 years and worked on the first ever Grime Day in 2016 with Stormzy . Sally has been with her partner Rick for 30 years and has two wonderful children Jack and Asa, who have recently left home to work and study. On her grave stone Sally would like
to have "Sally loved life, she knew how to throw a great party and loved her boys very much."
Will Kirby (aka Santero)
Will Kirby, aka Santero, has been working in the music industry as a DJ and producer for nearly 2 decades, representing the UK in Red Bull 3style and touring globally. In 2015, struggling with mental health and addiction issues, he quit his
Ministry of Sound residency and nearly left the music industry, before reshaping his career to establish a healthier balance between work, life and play. Now sober and thriving, he plays over 200 gigs a year, and is the host of Getahead - Behind The Curtain podcast.
Max Owen
Max Owen A.K.A Linguistics, started out as a hip-hop MC, however, while at uni in Bristol he became heavily involved with the D&B scene, with his career taking a huge leap in 2012 when he began working with legendary DJ and producer, Friction. The duo would go on to perform at some of the most prestigious festivals around the world including Glastonbury, Global Gathering and Pukkelpop. In 2018 the South-London-based rapper’s returned to his hip-hop roots, releasing his EP ‘Self-Medicated’- showing a more reflective direction & a frank and honest insight into his world, the record documented the rapper’s struggle with depression and anxiety. “Writing was my therapy,” he states about a project that attempts to tackle the stigma around mental health. "Although it might be uncomfortable for some, it’s so necessary for myself and others to talk about these things.”
Christine Brown
With an early career at Decca Records and a nine-year tenure at music charity Help Musicians UK (HMUK), where she rose up the ranks from a temp to Director of External Affairs, Christine has a wealth of experience within the music industry. Whilst at HMUK, she was at the heart of some of the organisation’s most transformational projects and initiatives including the Agenda 2021 strategy, the launch of the Northern Ireland office and the formation of Women in Music NI, the first UK chapter of the global organisation Women in Music. In late 2016, Christine spearheaded the ‘Can Music Make You Sick?’ academic study, the largest research into mental health in the music industry and in 2017, she led the most successful campaign in HMUK’s history, ‘Music Minds Matter’, with both attracting global headlines. This success continued with the launch and delivery of the ‘Music Minds Matter’ 24/7 support line and service for people working in music. She is a passionate mental health campaigner and advocate for change across the industry and has spoken at conferences across the UK and internationally.
