LATE NIGHT FUN at THE GEFFRYE MUSEUM!

Hackney Showroom in association The Geffrye Museum presents a Late Night Opening as part of And What? Queer Arts Festival and Museums at Night

Discover what home means to some of the UKs most prominent LGBTQI artists. With sermons, dance routines, short films, makeovers, love songs, talks, cocktails, workshops, performance, makers market, strong language, nudity and buckets of glitter, our artists present their findings in the glorious surroundings of the Museum of the Home. This will be followed by a big bendy knees up in the bar with songs and dancing around the piano.

LINE-UP

Scottee

Scottee is an artist from London, his work is often about outsiderness; race, sexuality, class, age and gender. He creates spaces where the perceived underdog is celebrated, at the forefront and no longer ignorable. in 2010 Scottee won the title of Time Out Performer of the Year, his debut solo tour The Worst of Scottee won Total Theatre Award for Innovation in 2013 and in 2015 Scottee was included on Independent's Rainbow List as one of Britain's most influential LGBTQI+ people. He is a regular collaborator with Hackney Showroom and currently an associate artist at the Roundhouse and with performance company Duckie.

Lasana Shabazz

Lasana Shabazz is an international performance artist who worked with Hackney Showroom last year when he premiered his one man show 'Minstrels'. He has also performed for Duckie, the V&A, Southbank, and RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) to name a few. In September he will be working alongside City Bird Gallery in New York on his second international artist residency.

Frau Welt

This Grande Dame of the Theatre has been mesmerising audiences in her acclaimed series of cabaret FRAU WELT: MASTERCLASS and sell-out solo show FRAU WELT: FAREWELL TO THE THEATRE at Hackney Showroom. It is rumoured Marlene Dietrich may make an appearance.

Travis Alabanza

Travis Alabanza is a Black, transfemme performance artist using live poetry, visuals, sound and theatre. Their recent one person show 'Stories of A Queer Brown Muddy Kid’ (2015/16) sold out the Royal Vauxhall Tavern & Housman's Bookstore, and included performances at the Keble Arts Festival, Oxford Queer Week, and Hackney Attic Previously a Barbican young Poet, and this year an Artist and Residence for Tate Britain, alabanza is determined to create more work showcasing the stories and narratives of those so often hidden.

La JohnJoseph

Semi-iconic performance artist, La JohnJoseph is a multi-hyphenate talent. Stage actor, novelist, journalist, and occasional movie star, La JJ makes work across media which investigates the intersections of social class, gender identity and religious faith. Psychedelic, satirical, and glitteringly critical, La JJ blends monologue, personae, and song to apoplectic effect. La JJ will next be appearing at Hackney Showroom in November.

Impermanence Dance Theatre

Wild, unpredictable, gender-bending Impermanence Dance Theatre are a Bristol-based company creating work in a wholly democratic process, without a leader. In the last five years, the company has collaborated on over 100 pieces, each time trying to reconfigure the elements of the creative process. They are the current recipients of the Kevin Spacey artists of choice award. Their next show, SEX BOX will premiere at Hackney Showroom in November.

Tom Marshman

Butterflies and Dinner Ladies has been developed as a short solo piece. It is about the relationship between older women and gay men. ‘It is a toast to the symbiosis of that particular relationship between the older lady, the spinster, widow, the old dear, the dames and duchess who steadfastly bring forth and help to bring about a change and transformation to create the emerging gay who comes out of the chrysalis to form the brightest of butterflies’. Tom speaks a poetic text while stripping layers of dresses. In this piece Tom wears many old ladies dresses in various styles, patterns and materials, (some belonging to the aunties and grannies mentioned) gradually revealing his unclothed self. The nylon dresses slide off the body in quite a lyrical way which responds to the music.

Lucille Power

Touch up/Good service – Having cut her teeth performing in queer/ trans cabarets and clubs, Lucille and performers excite and challenge audiences with their anarchic and participatory performance interventions. Commissioned by Duckie, this piece has provoked and delighted queer audiences, utilising ‘play’ as a tool to investigate gender, power, queerness and class, audience members become part of this visually sumptuous spectacle, and leave the encounter in some way transformed. By turns, uproarous, spectacular, brutal, tongue in cheek, tender and absurd, this work eases us out of our comfort zones, encouraging us to embrace the disorder, and see what happens.

ALASKA By Cheryl Martin

Alaska is a funny, magical trip to the moon, with singing and dancing thrown in: one woman’s extraordinary story of how she survived growing up with severe depression. Alaska, the one-woman-show, is inspired by writer-performer Cheryl Martin’s poetry collection, longlisted for the 2015 Polari Prize. “I called the show ALASKA after a line in a Lou Reed song, Caroline Says II, that goes ‘It’s so cold in Alaska.’ I chose that because most of the time my emotions seem numb, frozen. Then something happens and they wake up.”

A raw and powerful performance, with humour, heart and soul, with stunning vocals and beautiful imagery in the storytelling. With one in four of us estimated to experience mental health difficulties at sometime in our lives, this is a story that touches everyone, whether first-hand or through family and friends. “It is a devastatingly beautiful show, … poetic narrative and heart achingly profound… absolutely pioneering …people should go”– Chanje Kunda, performance poet and artist, Manchester Theatre Awards Nominee

Rachael Scicluna

The anthropology of the domestic kitchen from the perspective of older lesbians living in London, across their life course. Although most of the feminist, anthropological and sociological literature on the domestic unit has caught the interest of many, much of its critique to an androcentric society is still largely couched in a heteronormative discourse. Hence, by asking my key associates to take a "kitchen perspective" of their life I sought to add the voices of the 'other' to the literature on the domestic unit, but also to contribute to the diversity of gendered experience within the domestic unit across time and space.

Stately homos and the National Trust

The National Trust is often seen to be the antithesis of radical and queer, but Sutton House, the oldest domestic building in Hackney, breaks the mould through innovative programming and ground-breaking exhibitions. Sean will talk about their work to queer Sutton House, and to queer expectations of National Trust historic homes, specifically through their project ‘126’; a Shakespeare-inspired crowdsourced LGBTQ exhibition. Sean will also give a taste of the upcoming LGBTQ year-long takeover of the house.
