Born from a deep longing for the distinct flavours of Northern Mexico, Sonora Taqueria has ascended from a cult-favorite stall in Netil Market to a permanent, queue-worthy landmark in Stoke Newington. Founded by Michelle Salazar de la Rocha and Sam Napier, the eatery is a defiant celebration of Sonoran culinary tradition. Michelle, a Mexican native, and Sam began their journey with a DIY spirit, delivering homemade tortillas during the pandemic and even famously fighting a legal battle to defend the right for any Mexican establishment to use the word taqueria.

Their brick-and-mortar home on the High Street is a minimalist, high-energy hub where the focus remains entirely on the craft. The soul of the menu lies in their epic handmade flour tortillas, a staple of Northern Mexico that sets them apart from the corn-centric spots elsewhere in the city. These lacy, buttery foundations are filled with expertly grilled carne asada, smoky adobada (pork and pineapple), and rich beef barbacoa.
