Absurd Bird Soho - London Restaurant Review

Once upon a time, I was a very picky eater. So picky that my diet consisted of pot noodles, fried chicken and the odd peeled grape. 10 years later, my love for pot noodles has come to an end, but my love for chicken still remains. As for the grapes?...

Very disappointing. I was really looking forward to this meal. We were on the endless wings offer and ordered the buttermilk chicken and the garlic chicken. The former seemed to have no seasoning or spices at all. Just plain batter. We honestly thought the chef must have left some ingredients out. I expected southern chicken style flavours. Then the garlicky chicken was covered in a very thick layer of garlic butter. So much so that it was just like eating butter. Carnage to eat in terms of mess and quite unpleasant and greasy. We had to scrape so much off... We didn't finish and didn't order any more wings. Instead we left early. I really hope this was just an off night for the kitchen or that these were not the best choices from the menu. Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2018-01-17

Amazing food couldn't fault it and all came piping hot. Staff were very friendly and tried their best to give a good experiance. One thing i would say is its very small they should change location to get somewhere bigger. Then i wouldnt of been asked to leave when i had my table booked for another 45 mins.. if they want to keep it special and secluded they need to concentrate on the people in there not push them to go so more people can sit down. If they want a large amount of people they should get a bigger place. Overall though the food was good Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2018-01-13

We generally love going to Absurd Bird, its one of our favourite venues as the food is generally very good and the service and atmosphere is really enjoyable. However we wanted to put in a mention that this last time we went there we were quite disappointed. We ordered Fried Chicken and waffles (which is our fave!) and it arrived very quickly. The chicken and waffles were quite cold however, and personally I felt like the gravy didn't taste the same as it used to. Also the atmosphere was very loud and lots of screaming and shouting from a nearby group, which is fine as people should be having fun, we understand that, but we felt like it was a little over the top. They appeared to have taken control of the music for the night as well without considering the other customers. Overall I still think this place is great, which is why its disappointing if you don't get the usual great service. Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2018-01-13

My friend bought a Groupon voucher for this. The place is very hard to find - I even used my sat-nav and still couldn't find it. The chicken and waffle was really dry and it was a bit too much and the place was crowded but it did have good staff though.

Nice meal, great menu and tasty burger (very messy though!) There was a group of 6 and we had two very small circular tables between us which was quite cramped, the restaurant was also very hot too! But it was a nice meal and cocktails. Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2018-01-05

Absolute worst. Avoid this location at all costs. The food is perfectly fine, it’s the staff. It works take 30 minutes of my time to explain it all, but the people that work there have such an attitude problem that it will be what ultimately shits this location. After spilling a pot of sauce on my friend, the server simply walked away with no offer of help, nothing. When we spin to the manager, she didn’t understand what the problem was? I had booked a table for 6 people at 7pm. They basically tried fitting us on a table fit for 4 people - we were quite squashed, however they were quite apologetic about this and did give us the option of sharing the booth area. Bar service was prompt and with Buy One Get One Free, we enjoyed the drinks, however apart from that, there wasn't anything too positive about my experience at Absurd Bird. We had to get our own cutlery, napkins and bottles of water as there wasn't much staff around and my friend had to ask several times for a plate to put his bones on - bare minimum service was received. The food itself wasn't too bad but won't really be in a hurry to visit again - diddn't bother paying the service charge! It's a shame as I heard positive things about Absurd Bird from others so was expecting better. Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2017-12-20

I went to absurd bird with my friends for brunch on the weekend. I’ve been once before and loved it however, the menu has changed slightly and dessert isn’t included in the whole price anymore. As a table of 7 we were told we would have the half of a booth as another booking was coming and we were squashed into the space. I understand that it was a busy period but the staff weren’t as attentive, our mains came out with 20 mins to go until our booking was over and half of the mains were lukewarm. Overall what Absurd Bird offer is great - but during busy periods they need to stop over booking!! Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2017-12-16

It annoys me to only give two stars but the service was shocking. Friday night. Prime time. Various members of staff but none cared about service customers except their barman who eventually took our orders, made our drinks and also got the bill for us. When we arrived it took about 5 mins to seat me and my wife, menus were given and then the waitress vanished back upstairs to her mobile phone. After waiting 20 mins I went upstairs to ask if she would take any orders from us and she said she would be down shortly, 5 mins later the barman came to our rescue. The other waitress was too busy kissing and cuddling with her male friend at the bar. After 37 mins to be precise our drinks came and we ordered the food, by this time my wife just wanted to walk out. There seemed to be an arguement between manager and employee in the open at the bar about working times which wasn’t very professional and to be honest the whole experience was ruined. I will not be coming back here again. The barman needs to work for a better company as he was helpful. Disappointed because the food was quite nice but the service was the worst I’ve had. We went for bottomless wings. We were advised beforehand to arrive promptly or 15 minutes early to make the most of our 2 hour slot. We therefore arrived at 18:50. We weren't seated at our table until 19:10 and had nothing explained to us until 19:30. We were then told we could have unlimited wings and the deal came with fries. We ordered some dips to have with the wings too. The wings came fairly promptly with, no sign of any dips or chips. Nevertheless, we had some wings. We had 2 lots of buttermilk and 2 lots of buffalo. The buffalo wings weren't bad - the sauce was good - however really hard to eat as the inedible top of the wings were not chopped off (I don't know why restaurants do not remove this). The buttermilk wings were bad. The fried coating just fell off to leave a very raw-looking a chewy centre. As much as we love medium-rare chicken, we chose to avoid these undercoocked ones, and even if we had wanted to complain, there wouldn't have been anyone to complain to. We asked the passing waiter for our dips about 6 times in this period - only to be ignore every time. We ordered some more buffalo wings, and by the time these had arrived, the medium-rare chicken had settled into our stomachs so we weren't actually hungry. And then our dips (that we had ordered at the start of the meal) finally came. I don't understand how it can take so long to put a dip in a pot but anyway. All dips other than the Sriracha mayo were revolting - but quite frankly we all felt so ill by this point that it would be unfair to judge. We left - paid up - the waiter apologised for the slow service which we accepted. We said we didn't think the wings were very nice so he gave us a 20% off voucher for next time. I don't think any of us will be using that. One of the table proceeded to go into every pub on the way home to "eject" the wings out of both ends, whilst the others just felt thoroughly ill. Decent food but poor service. After being showed to our table, drinks didn't arrive until a good 30 mins sitting there and even though I booked bottomless chicken wings Wednesday only got served a total of 4 chicken wings after 1h 40 mins and that after constantly trying to get the staff's attention to get a top up. They eventually took the chicken wings deal off the bill but overall a very disappointing dining experience. Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2017-12-13

Really poor experience, waited 15mins to be asked for drinks and there were no cold bottles as the fridge hadnt been restocked, we ended up getting 3 different beers, at least they honoured the reduced price on them. Unsatisfactory evening; we had booked to celebrate our friends engagement. Over the course of our evening, the service was poor with orders being missed, taking a long time to process (a 15 minute wait for just five bottles of beer to be brought to the table, when the restaurant wasn't even busy), and food was served cold and not all together meaning we had to wait before we could all start eating. They were also out of their signature dish of Chicken & Waffles, which was the main draw in me booking this restaurant, despite us dining early in the evening and the venue being quite quiet in terms of bookings. At the end of the evening there seemed to be some issue with the downstairs bar where it was flooding. When I reported this to a member of staff, they replied with a curt "I know", with no thanks for my help. The staff then proceeded to try and repair the leak, ripping up wood panels around our table and carrying out building work, the whole time making no apology to our table or explaining the disturbance. A bad experience, will not be dining at Absurd Bird again. Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2017-10-31

While our waitress was great, sadly the food was not. We ordered chicken and waffles, the chicken was fine but the waffles were black and badly burnt. The fact they were served was surprisingly so when we were cautiously asked "is everything ok?" obviously we said "no the waffles are burnt..." Our waitress was quick to say she'd get some more and a short time later a second portion of waffles arrived... Burnt. Just ever so slightly less black, with an apology that there was only one chef working that lunchtime (a Friday!). Disappointingly I still had to pay for privilege. I won't be returning. It's a shame because the food is incredible - but every part of the service was absolutely poultry (get it?). Pathé-tic efforts from the staff who took 20mins to serve drinks, and managed to delete our order 5 mins after taking it. The kitchen somehow delivered all of our sides 30mins before any of the mains were ready. And it takes longer to get the bill than it does to hatch an egg. I love absurd bird, the meals I've had at the other london branch in whitechapel have been amazing. This night was incredibly disappointing though. We waited an hour between being seated and our starters coming, some main courses arrived before we finished the starters, others arrived after some people had finished theirs. We waited 30mins after finishing an no one had come to clean up or take desert options so I went to the bar to get the bill. Most food did taste great, but one set of wings was cold and undercooked, the other was luke warm and tasted awful. They did apologise for slowness but I advise avoid this branch and got to the other where the service has always been outstanding. Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2017-09-06

The main meal was very slow to come out causing us to over run by 25 mins but food was okay, lovely cheesecake. Not the best place but a pleasant enough experience. Waited 10 mins to get order taken. Was not busy at all. Waitress was chatting to other staff. So walked up and asked to get served. Didn't have any slider buns left which took them another 10 mins to tell us. Changed the order to a burger which then they forgot to serve us. I finished my meal while my partner sat there waiting. Ended up taking the order home. Decent food but wouldn't return. Thanks Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2017-08-16

I came here based on a friends recommendation and I have never tried this place. I had my birthday meal yesterday. And although I found the food was great, the experience was terrible. There was 10 of us sitting on 3 little round tables with all of us trying to fit our food on the table. A number of times our food/ plate had fallen because there was just no space. It was very frustrating. There was a long table with chairs and lounge sofa right across from us and we asked if we could move there and they told us that has been reserved (we had also reserved a booking but we just got hree mini round tables). In the end nobody sat on those tables, and they stayed empty the whole time we were there. it was disappointing.. I felt because of this it had ruined our experience and our ability to enjoy our meal. I didn't check the receipt properly till I got home and I was not pleased with having to pay 23 pounds of service charge when our experience was disappointing. I had high hopes for this place and when I called them earlier they told us they could accommodate a large group. Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2017-07-08

they had run out of mac and cheese meaning my independence burger was just two chicken filets. And I was unable to order the absurd mac and cheesecake with my meal. They also ran out of glasses at one point so drinks had to be rushed so glasses could be rewashed and drinks could be served again. The food was nice but I am also disappointed we all had to pay full price for the burger although a key ingredient was missing. The wings were the best part. They were big and covered in sauce. Drinks tasted very very watered down. Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2017-07-04

Food was average, good enough for a chicken restaurant but nothing special. Early into my meal one waitress spilled part of someone else's order at my feet and left a whole chicken wing by my feet. Had a great time here on Saturday evening. There was 14 of us in our party, taking over half of the hidden basement area. Really disappointed. Happy hour, if I hadn't questioned the bill we would have been charged full price. The food was boring & very bland. We had buttermilk chicken wings followed by 'grilled' chicken & 'sweet gravy', that would be roast poor quality chicken & Bisto then.... The service was dreadful. We were waiting for our main course & asked if we wanted desserts, none of the staff had a clue what the other was doing. We won't be returning an expensive, poor meal. Great chicken wings (better than any in the Southern states of the US that I've tried) but terrible service. The waitress couldn't answer questions about the food and when we asked her to ask the chef she said she would be didn't come back to us. We had to ask to order drinks (after 10 minutes at the bar), food (after 30 minutes at the table) and finally (after 3 hours in total) for the bill. There was a huge delay between courses. The restaurant wasn't even busy - at one point all 4 staff members were on their phones. Given the quality of the chicken wings it is a shame but we won't be returning. Unfortunately i didnt get to experience absurd bird, as on my way to the soho branch for my fiances suprise birthday meal i received a call as i was appraching soho to say the kitchen had been shit due to the gas and electricity being shut off. Me and the rest of the party (9of us) had to divert to your commercial st branch as told by the member of staff we maybe seated. I then had to discreetly text everyone to tell them what had happened. We got to commercial st, the suprise now being ruined, as my finace saw his family and friends at the entrance. To be told they could not accomadate us and we could not even wait in bar due to shortage of staff. I understand it was beyond your control, but i night i had organised did not go to plan at all. After 2 hours of finally reaching a destination we ended up somewgere we had been before just for convenience as the night was going so flat. I have not received any emails formally apologising, i was howeversl told i would receive a free meal. I am emailing on behalf of my whole party as we all drove all rhe way to soho from essex, then to commercial st and then ended up in canary wharf. I look forward to hearing from absurd bird . My table was at 8:30 under the name of myself. Faye Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2017-03-04

Firstly I will say the food was amazing, the BBQ chicken wings, the parmesan and the fried chicken and pancakes was great. BUT the service. :/ Visited for the pancake day 'mardi gras party', had a lovely waiter seat me and I asked about an advertised pancake special he explained that there was being served pancake (it was the only reason I went). I ordered 4 drinks and as I was alone waiting for a friend who was 10 minutes away I asked for the first 2 - the bar-tending girl only brought one (which was confusing). I then had to go up after my friend had arrived (we waited over 10 minutes) and ask for the other drinks. We waited once again to order and asked for the instagram advertised 'Fried chicken and pancake' special however the bartender/waitress then told me that they did not have the pancakes advertised on the Absurd Bird instagram - I asked her to check with her colleague who had told me when I arrived that they did. As we had only come for the pancakes and fried chicken special, I waited for her to check with her colleague (waited more than 5 minutes for her to go upstairs), but she did not. SOOOO I had to walk up the stairs and ask myself. (not the first time that day I had to go to do things myself in a restaurant that had table service). He assured me that they were serving them and took the order for me instead. Now what baffled me was that it wasn't advertised well but the couple on the table next to ours were so amazed by what we ordered that they ordered the exact same thing. when we were done and fed the amazing food, we requested to have one plate of 'what we just had, the chicken and pancakes' verbatim to take away... now I'm not sure if the girl who was serving us was tired, fed up or confused BUT our bill arrived with an order of 'chicken and waffles'... which we definitely didn't order. But low and behold in the take away bag she had put in the chicken and waffles we didn't order The entire service experience was poor, I had to go upstairs just to get good service - there weren't many people either so I was confused as to why I had to go to the bar and order. Couldn't tip or pay service charge because it was a bad service experience - but hats off to the chef and the guy who was greeting customers upstairs, who saved this review from having 1 star. Pleasant experience and great cocktails but the buttermilk fried chicken was disappointing to be honest, it didn't taste seasoned in the slightest and we had to cover it with salt for some sort of flavour. Despite booking a week in advance for a 2 hour slot, we were told the restaurant was full and made to sit upstairs where the take away deliveries we're constantly going in and out leaving the door open to the 2 weather and then hurried out after 1.5 hours as they'd booked another table for then. The sides were very good but the chicken was poor quality, stringy and chewy, and fairly tasteless, very underseasoned. We were excited about trying Absurd Bird but now won't visit again, it was very disappointing Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2017-01-14

New Year's Eve so it was very quite but the staff were very attentive without being smothering... very friendly.. reasonably priced. And the food and drink were excellent... the spinach and artichoke dip was my favourite part of the meal very closely followed by the buttermilk chicken wings. Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2016-12-31

Great staff, great cocktails, but like other reviewers we felt the grief chicken was really bland. No flavour in the chicken or the breadcrumbs. Just needs some more seasoning in the recipe. But the restaurant is brilliant and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend again. Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2016-11-26

Good luck. You're REALLY going to need it. Under-seasoned, lukewarm and if the bun can overpower the flavour of the chicken, something's really not right. Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2016-11-25

We had chicken and waffles with gravy, and it was perfect. The chicken and waffles were super crisp on the outside and the gravy was proper brown gravy, bot the white American style I expected. The only downsides were that the buttermilk wings had too much breading and the beach in Soho doesn't currently serve hot drinks,a and I was hanging out for a strong blackcoffee! Overall, great experience. Will be returning Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2016-11-12

Food was alright. Chicken was really nice - moist, soft and not at all tough. But the batter didn't have much flavour on the chicken and waffles. It could have done with much more seasoning. The waffles also didn't taste of anything and the gravy was not nice at all. The service was pretty poor. We booked, arrived at an empty restaurant and was given a booth right by the door. We asked to move to the empty booth next to it (the weather had just turned and I get really cold, especially as am pregnant) but was told "it's booked". We tried to explain to the waitress that they could just have the table given to us to the other guests, but she didn't understand it. What's worse was that no one sat at that booth by the time we'd left. So basically the meal was punctuated by the door opening and closing again and again. We ate the meal in a hurry and left as quickly as we could. Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2016-11-04

Food was great, will definitely return. Good deal on happy hour ! Service was average/poor - drinks were spilled, food dropped on the table and despite the server insisting they didn't need to write down the order, one of the sides were missed. I've had outstanding food and service at Absurd Bird before and this was my first time trying the Bottomless Brunch. They had run out of most items on the brunch menu by 13:30 and when we asked if we can order from the regular menu but pay extra for bottomless drinks, we were declined. We just ordered from the main menu and again they ran out of some items. And they couldn't make my espresso martini drink because they didn't have espresso. How can you serve brunch and not have most items and coffee??? On top of that, the server was not very apologetic at all. They managed to redeem themselves as the bartender gave us a free bottle of prosecco to make up for things hence the 3 star rating. But my suggestion is that if you are going to offer a bottomless brunch menu with set items, make sure you have enough of the items to last for the weekend! Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2016-10-30

Terrible service, the wings arrived stone cold, the mac and cheese was extremely bland as was the grilled chicken. Also, i could not finish my cocktail as it was such an odd taste. the only decent thing on the menu was the fried chicken and waffle. wasnt a fan of the peanut butter cheesecake either (and i LOVE peanut butter.) We arrived at the restaurant and they seated me and my partner on a table upstairs. We were then practically forced to move to a tiny table as another couple wanted our table (even though we had made reservations). I wouldnt recommend but if anyone does want to give this restaurant a go, i would stick to chicken and waffle, Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2016-10-28

I think they really need to work on the food, both in terms of quality and presentation, because there are a lot of chicken places in Soho now and there is nothing special about this place. For example, don't serve tough, dry chicken, don't double cook your fries, do serve smaller portions of coleslaw but make it taster (see: Dishoom for amazing coleslaw), be more generous with your sauces. Food was really tasty! Probably the most authentic that I have tasted in London. Definitely go & check it out. Priced well. Service was so-so but I think it was only 1 server working. Be aware the actual restaurant is in a basement, so it was hot down there!! Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2016-10-26

The food here is outstanding, they've made fried chicken as good as possible. However, the service is all over the place - the waitress clearly forgot part of our order, and then the wings turned up 10 minutes after finishing our other meals. To be fair they gave them on the house, but was a bit odd. Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2016-10-26

Service was rushed, felt like they wanted us out from us ordering drinks. We were booked in for 6pm and they had no ribs left by 6.15pm. We were also told we couldn't order corn despite it being on the menu. The chicken wasn't seasoned the favour was a sauce in a small pot that you would have a dip in. Would not recommend or return. An absolute treat of a place! My new favourite spot in Soho. Food was delicious (and not just fried chicken and waffles). The cocktails were excellent and varied. The spinach and artichoke dip along with the cocktails were delightful. Everyone else was not. The chicken wings were not properly cooked, which led us to thinking the Bao buns were not either, the macaroni cheese was very stodgy, and the sweet potato fries were stone cold. Its a shame as the menu looks great, but the food quality unfortunately was not which meant my friend and I leaving with slight food pangs in our stomach. Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2016-10-17

The chicken wings were extremely tasty - especially the BBQ Buffalo and Hot Sriracha! The blue cheese and hot dips were very good too and the fries went well with the wings. The cheese biscuit was more like bread, which we weren't expecting and the mash was very sweet, which we didn't like. The bill was very reasonable and we would DEFINITELY come back! I visited the SoHo branch of Absurd Bird after eating at the Spitalfields branch. The restaurant was great. Friendly, speedy service and lovely drinks. Myself and my work colleagues had a fab night. If you love fried chicken, this is a must visit place. Just one teeny tiny gripe - the wings in the Spitalfields branch were so huge that between myself and my partner we struggled to eat 6 each along with a main. However we ended up under ordering at Soho as the wings were much smaller. Visited Absurd Bird Soho on 2016-09-21

It was good. However we booked for the Design My Night 241 Cocktail special but we didnt get this in there. The staff knew nothing about the offer so we ended up not getting their happy hour. Cocktail £6.00. Not as good an offer. Obvs this was disappointing!
