Description
Lai Rai brings a burst of Vietnamese energy to Peckham’s Rye Lane, channelling the buzz of Saigon’s street‑food culture into a neon‑lit, playful canteen. The restaurant comes from the same family behind local favourite Bánh Bánh and is co‑founded by Blair Nguyen of cult snack collective Vinaxoa, whose Saigon upbringing shapes the menu’s bold, youthful spirit. From its red‑and‑white funfair‑style awning to its butter‑yellow interiors and glowing neon accents, Lai Rai feels like stepping into a fast‑paced, late‑night hangout where the music’s loud, the flavours are punchy and the vibe is pure South London cool.
In the kitchen, the team turns out a new‑school, no‑pho Vietnamese menu packed with shareable plates that riff on classics - think prawn lollies on lemongrass skewers, sticky pork belly, papaya jellyfish salad and crispy twice‑fried chicken. Bia hơi culture carries through from day to night, with bánh mì and strong Vietnamese coffee in the morning shifting to cocktails, ice‑cold beers and vibrant small plates come evening. Thoughtful design touches from House of Baby and wines curated by Top Cuvée help round out the experience, while the restaurant’s growing reputation includes earning a Bib Gourmand for its flavour‑packed, great‑value cooking.
