Akara

Description

Tucked beneath the railway arches in Borough Yards, Akara is a lively, flavour-packed restaurant from the team behind Akoko. The concept centres on the akara, a black-eyed pea fritter found across West Africa and Brazil, reimagined here as the heart of a concise, well-priced à la carte menu.

The kitchen draws inspiration from Nigerian Akara Osu and Brazilian Acarajé, blending crispy textures with bold, layered seasoning. The fritters come topped with options such as BBQ prawn, avocado and cucumber, or beef short rib, while larger plates showcase dishes like Lagos-style BBQ poussin, sea bream with moqueca and prawn, and grilled pork with feijoada. Sides of efik rice and plantain chips round things out with comforting, generous flair.

Execution is sharp throughout, with careful balancing of heat, acidity and spice. The setting, industrial arches softened by warm hospitality, adds to the appeal, creating an atmosphere that’s relaxed but considered. It’s a restaurant that feels rooted in heritage while confidently modern in delivery, offering one of Borough’s most distinctive and flavour-forward dining experiences.
