Description

What happens when you take something that imitated the West but was born in the East, then bring it back to the West to imitate the East?

A deliberately inauthentic and playful interpretation of the hugely popular Hong Kong cha chaan teng diners that took the region by storm in the 1950s.
Cha Chaan Teng are a unique cultural and culinary interpretation of these much-loved unique Hong Kong diners. They're not pretending to be authentic, but they hope you find that our dishes, created from a curious and creative fusion of East and West, make for a deliciously unusual dining experience.

A basement restaurant with 170 covers, retro-luxe cocktail bar and "bao bar", Cha Chaan Teng is based on the casual cafe-diners in Hong Kong, with modern touches including marble top tables, urban Chinese art and booth seating.

Brought to London by Splendid Restaurants, and boasting a menu devised by TV chef Jeremy Pang, Cha Chaan Teng pays homage to retro Hong Kong dining, with an authentic dose of Chinese cuisine.

Open for dinner and lunch, all of seven days a week, the menu at Cha Chaan Teng is that of 1950s and 1960s inspiration, and alongside classic plates like crispy seabream or crispy duck; guests can also enjoy specially created Chinese tea-themed cocktails from their unique drinks menu.

They have their fantastic bao bar table available to hire for a maximum of 16 guests. Be in the centre of the action at this amazing table and order a chinese feast for you and your friends to share.

Or why not enjoy some awesome drinks in their chic cocktail bar. A great mix of original cocktails such as a Oolong Negroni, Lychee Cobbler and a Cha Chaan Teng Gin Sour. Or try some great wine from their extensive wine list.

Cha Chaan Teng - London Restaurant Review

Cha Chaan Teng - London Restaurant Review

In Hong Kongese culture cha chaan tengs were a bit like our greasy spoons, places where everyday, working people could grab a bite to eat. The cafes started to spring up in the ‘50s and ‘60s as a result of Britain’s colonial rule;...

Good quality customer service for booking and welcoming but after that it was quite disastrous. The starter order came out wrong so we returned it and it only arrived at our table when we finished our meal. The quality of the food was unexciting and a bit commercial. Nothing was taken off our bill to compensate for the awful service. It just means we won't go back with better quality food and price in london. Shame. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 11 Feb 2017

- good service and very friendly staff both behind the bar and on the floor - the whole concept and vibe of the venue was amazing, very unique for London! - great cocktails, and it's a bonus if you're there during Happy Hour! - majority of the dishes were good, and the lobster prawn toast was our favourite, but the steamed chilli aubergine dish was a major let down (it wasn't cooked through, still hard in the centre, just very watery, bland and flavourless). The milk tea was nothing like HK style milk tea, would not recommend it. - portion sizes are a little on the small size - we wanted to try out this place as we've lived in HK for years and glad that we got a 20% discount on food - would we return? maybe, but not in a hurry as nothing on the food menu was particularly outstanding, but we might drop in if we're in the area for happy hour and light bites as the place has such a cool vibe! visited Cha Chaan Teng on 04 Feb 2017

Delicious food and affordable. Although beware that the bao buns are actually miniature versions from elsewhere! everything else was fantastic visited Cha Chaan Teng on 02 Feb 2017

Pro's: A nicely trendy designed place and initial staff greeting was pleasant. Con's: Although our waitress was very entertaining she pretty much screwed up our orders of food and drink. They also forgot our surprise cocktail that was supposed to be included with the booking! Average quality food for the price. Overall, more style over substance. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 03 Feb 2017

Pays homage to canteen style dining in Hong Kong, loved it from the western graffiti style art of Chinese celebrities to the basic bench seating (glad I was seated in a table booth thought). main portions were big, designed for sharing, very Chinese style. The Sea Bream is a must for presentation and taste. A good group of friends can help with blanking out the poor service though. Tuhina visited Cha Chaan Teng on 10 Feb 2017

Beautiful restaurant! Early dinner there 7.30pm, unfortunately some basic dishes already sold out, also surprised to find out another dish sold out only after we asked the missing order. Hope it's just teething problems, I'd like to see it do well. Will be back, but only for drinks & (great) Bao bar! Victor visited Cha Chaan Teng on 11 Feb 2017

Though the food was good, the service was not. We arrived at 6.30pm and had booked the table for 1 hour. However in the end we left at 8.45pm: Waiters took very long with orders,as did the food, our desserts were forgotten and our bill was wrong. I suggest you hire more staff,as your staff clearly had too much work. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 25 Jan 2017

FOOD IS FANTASTIC!! Decor is fabulous... we loved it, a hidden gem. Look forward to coming back on a Friday or Saturday night. My only criticism is they seemed understaffed and we waited quite a long time for the staff to take our orders in between courses and come back around for drink top ups. We had to flag wait staff down. Other than that, BRILLIANT. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 29 Jan 2017

Food was lovely, even if some of the others didn't have enough of the proteins, Some had the same order and it came different to each person. The biggest let down was the service. Cocktails needed to be chased and some of the food arrived late and cold. Waitress was really nice but when we asked to get the starters and appetizers first and mains second, we got all the orders together at the same time. Also some of the vegetarian burgers were served in the same plate as the meat ones, not a very pleasant experience for our veggie guests. We might come back for the happy hours, as we love the cocktails, but none of us will come back for a proper meal. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 27 Jan 2017

Lobster prawn toast, little beef popcorn things, lemon chicken scewers I would recommend. The ribs in cola were served cold, then reheated and not even taken off the bill which was disappointing. The mains were very sweet but then they were sweet and sour! The duck egg rice was very good the service was very disorganised with staff out of sync with each other but very friendly and helpful. I would go back knowing what to order. Ross visited Cha Chaan Teng on 14 Mar 2017

Waitress got my order wrong. Ordered a spam crusty roll but got a pork chop one instead. Upon questioning her, she insisted it was spam and not pork chop even she said "pork chop" when delivering the dish on my table. It even said pork chop on the receipt. The beef short rib lacks flavour and is a very odd combination. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 18 Mar 2017

Decided to try out the restaurant for a birthday dinner based on reviews read on Time out London. The Interior decor gave a hint of Hongkong China with a modern take. The ccktails were amazing and though slighly delayed did not disappoint. The hihliht of the meal was the peanut butter french toast which came with condensed milk. The way it melted in your mouth was just a delight with a slight crunch from the crust. The main meal did not dissapoint either with each guest thourouhly enjoying their meals. I did not personally has desert because | had had 2 servings of the peanut butter french toast, but my guests were raving about the pana cota on the menu on our way back home that night. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 17 Mar 2017

Staff were fantastic, extremely attentive and the atmosphere in the restaurant was great. Other than that a really fantastic experience and will definitely come again. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 04 Mar 2017
