Cha Chaan Teng - London Restaurant Review

In Hong Kongese culture cha chaan tengs were a bit like our greasy spoons, places where everyday, working people could grab a bite to eat. The cafes started to spring up in the ‘50s and ‘60s as a result of Britain’s colonial rule;...

Was quite disappointed to see my all times favourite soft shell crab is now half the portion for the same price ;(( It used to be two crabs for £10, and now it's only one. Sadness!! Pavel visited Cha Chaan Teng on 19 Jul 2017

I didn't enjoy my experience at Cha Chaan Teng. I was there for dinner but had pre drinks in the bar area. That was the best part of my night. I didn't enjoy my meal. My friends and I had to wait to eat our food because the dishes were brought out separately and far apart, even though the restaurant was not busy. As I said the restaurant was not busy but the service was very mediocre. I wouldn't recommend it. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 07 Jul 2017

Food has gone significantly down hill since my last visit. I also don't understand the mixing of Chinese food and burgers in the same place. Interior and drinks deals still good so would be better as a bar than for food visited Cha Chaan Teng on 28 Jun 2017

Excellent waiter with a smile, very helpful and was great that he explained to what degree the meat is cooked, so we could make our preference at the time of order. Service was a little slow, considering most tables were empty. We take into consideration that we were a group of 10, However there was almost a 10 min gap between the first boards arriving at the table and the second. Milkshakes - This needs to incorporate lactose free milk i.e. Almond milk and/or Soy milk. I was unable to enjoy a milkshake. For £5 you would expect a larger size, it wasn't value for money. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 22 Jun 2017

This is not a criticism to Cha Chaan Teng but to Bite Me Burger. There was a mix up with my booking and we were taken to the Bite Me Burger side first and moved to Cha Chaan Teng side and then moved back to Bite Me Burger table; we were booked fo Bite Me Burger for a complementary lunch for 2 but the waitress originally offered us the Chinese food. Our fries were sitting at the counter for 7-8 minutes before they arivedcold at our table long before the sliders. Our sliders took another 7-8 minutes to arrive. It was difficult to get the service, and at the end we were told to pay the service charge of £3.80 even we had the complementary lunch. Bite Me Burger need to improve their act to survive. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 17 Jun 2017

Went for the soft launch for the sliders - delicious! We were also there for happy hour, good value lager & cocktails. The service was really good and the food just as marvellous. Although highly recommended, not sure if I would return and pay full price for the sliders (£59 for a dozen) Serene visited Cha Chaan Teng on 13 Jun 2017

Food was very nice and once we were seated the service was also very good. Only doesn't get 5 stars because there was no one to seat us when we arrived and when I approached a server to ask he didn't understand my "I have a booking, do we seat ourselves or will someone show us to a table"?! Not a particularly complex question. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 15 Jun 2017

Food was all fine but the service (once order was taken) was incredibly slow (but friendly). Our food took over half an hour to arrive even though the restaurant was not busy at all. Although the decor, vibe and service were fine, the food was definitely not. The soft shell crab was too sweet and the rest of the other dishes were too salty. My husband is from Hong Kong and was disappointed with how they completely botched one of his dad's favourite dishes. This is the kind of place you should only go for drinks, not dinner. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 11 May 2017

Visit was pleasant. It was very warm in the restaurant, which wasn't confortbale to start with. Out waitress was lovely and I'm assuming new, (blonde har lady, maybe Australian). My friend selected an option on the menu which was not avaialble which we were not infomred of to start with, which was ok, as we had been told by front of house that it was a new menu. The waitress returned to our table to ask my friend what she wanted which was avialable on the menu. I then selected what I wanted and was infromed this was not available. The waitress at not one point offered to tell us what was not on the menu, to which I had to prompt her,so I could make a deicsion on dishes available. Whislt I appreciate it was a new menu, the waitress should have disclosed what was not avialable on the menu, once we were seated. The fact we were told twice that two items that we selected were not on the menu, should have prompted her to tell us all items that were not available. My food arrived but half of my friend's food hadn't. This took another 5/10 minutes before it arrived on the table. The food was very tastey and lovely but slightly cold when it had arrived at the table, All in all I think there are a few points that need to be worked on, but I'm sure these will be ironed out as time goes on. Atmosphere in the restaurant was flat and in my opinion the choice of music did not suit the style of dining. One of the waitresses serving gave poor customer service. This may be due to inexperience (I am not sure) but when I politely asked if it was possible for her to pop some paper under the table leg to stop it wobbling, she suggested to me that I used a napkin and was relectant to do that herself but did eventually. My partners starter came out a long time before mine did (5 minutes plus). At the end of the meal, my partner paid the other waitress who was also serving us and as we got up to leave, the first waitress asked us how we wanted to pay. I said we had already paid and she proceeded to question who etc. Mistakes of course happen but the whole dining experience was frustrating and there were a number of miscommunications between the staff which could have been avoided. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 25 Mar 2017

I can't rave about this place enough. The food was incredible. The happy hour cocktails are fun and delicious. There's no scrimping on the alcohol content. As for food, oh my god. We had the skewers and rib bao to start, and what a start. A real taste explosion in the mouth. We just inhaled our food. For our mains we both had the crispy duck and French toast. Sounds odd but it so isn't. The flavours work really well together. And the portions are huge but it doesn't matter - you will eat it all. If after all that you have space for dessert then I recommend the hedgehog buns with condensed milk. Don't ask, just try it. I have to admit that I was so full that I had half of it to go. If there is one downside it's the wallpaper in the toilets will mess with your mind. That's it. I can't fault it, I am going back. It is the perfect place for midweek happy hour drinks (£5!!!) and any excuse for a meal. I had a travel zoo voucher which was a bargain, though without it the bill does rack up. But it's worth it. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 28 Mar 2017

Waitress got my order wrong. Ordered a spam crusty roll but got a pork chop one instead. Upon questioning her, she insisted it was spam and not pork chop even she said "pork chop" when delivering the dish on my table. It even said pork chop on the receipt. Decided to try out the restaurant for a birthday dinner based on reviews read on Time out London. The Interior decor gave a hint of Hongkong China with a modern take. The ccktails were amazing and though slighly delayed did not disappoint. The hihliht of the meal was the peanut butter french toast which came with condensed milk. The way it melted in your mouth was just a delight with a slight crunch from the crust. The main meal did not dissapoint either with each guest thourouhly enjoying their meals. I did not personally has desert because | had had 2 servings of the peanut butter french toast, but my guests were raving about the pana cota on the menu on our way back home that night. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 17 Mar 2017

Lobster prawn toast, little beef popcorn things, lemon chicken scewers I would recommend. The ribs in cola were served cold, then reheated and not even taken off the bill which was disappointing. The mains were very sweet but then they were sweet and sour! The duck egg rice was very good the service was very disorganised with staff out of sync with each other but very friendly and helpful. I would go back knowing what to order. Ross visited Cha Chaan Teng on 14 Mar 2017

Very stylish basement restaurant with banquet seating (although my party had the large table with high chairs). Great cocktail list, food that we ordered was a touch on the pricey side (as I am familiar with the original concept of cheap and cheerful HK cafes in Asia) but all delicious. I think the menu might need a little more explanation - ie sharing plates, how many per person, vs mains. Overall my party were impressed and I'll definitely be back! visited Cha Chaan Teng on 18 Feb 2017

Pays homage to canteen style dining in Hong Kong, loved it from the western graffiti style art of Chinese celebrities to the basic bench seating (glad I was seated in a table booth thought). main portions were big, designed for sharing, very Chinese style. The Sea Bream is a must for presentation and taste. A good group of friends can help with blanking out the poor service though. Tuhina visited Cha Chaan Teng on 10 Feb 2017

Good quality customer service for booking and welcoming but after that it was quite disastrous. The starter order came out wrong so we returned it and it only arrived at our table when we finished our meal. The quality of the food was unexciting and a bit commercial. Nothing was taken off our bill to compensate for the awful service. It just means we won't go back with better quality food and price in london. Shame. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 11 Feb 2017

- good service and very friendly staff both behind the bar and on the floor - the whole concept and vibe of the venue was amazing, very unique for London! - great cocktails, and it's a bonus if you're there during Happy Hour! - majority of the dishes were good, and the lobster prawn toast was our favourite, but the steamed chilli aubergine dish was a major let down (it wasn't cooked through, still hard in the centre, just very watery, bland and flavourless). The milk tea was nothing like HK style milk tea, would not recommend it. - portion sizes are a little on the small size - we wanted to try out this place as we've lived in HK for years and glad that we got a 20% discount on food - would we return? maybe, but not in a hurry as nothing on the food menu was particularly outstanding, but we might drop in if we're in the area for happy hour and light bites as the place has such a cool vibe! visited Cha Chaan Teng on 04 Feb 2017

Pro's: A nicely trendy designed place and initial staff greeting was pleasant. Con's: Although our waitress was very entertaining she pretty much screwed up our orders of food and drink. They also forgot our surprise cocktail that was supposed to be included with the booking! Average quality food for the price. Overall, more style over substance. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 03 Feb 2017

FOOD IS FANTASTIC!! Decor is fabulous... we loved it, a hidden gem. Look forward to coming back on a Friday or Saturday night. My only criticism is they seemed understaffed and we waited quite a long time for the staff to take our orders in between courses and come back around for drink top ups. We had to flag wait staff down. Other than that, BRILLIANT. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 29 Jan 2017

Excellent restaurant and dining experience. Super funky and charming at the same time. Staff and food was amazing at a very very decent price. Food was lovely, even if some of the others didn't have enough of the proteins, Some had the same order and it came different to each person. The biggest let down was the service. Cocktails needed to be chased and some of the food arrived late and cold. Waitress was really nice but when we asked to get the starters and appetizers first and mains second, we got all the orders together at the same time. Also some of the vegetarian burgers were served in the same plate as the meat ones, not a very pleasant experience for our veggie guests. We might come back for the happy hours, as we love the cocktails, but none of us will come back for a proper meal. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 27 Jan 2017

Though the food was good, the service was not. We arrived at 6.30pm and had booked the table for 1 hour. However in the end we left at 8.45pm: Waiters took very long with orders,as did the food, our desserts were forgotten and our bill was wrong. I suggest you hire more staff,as your staff clearly had too much work. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 25 Jan 2017

The starters were the star of the show here. They were so good that the mains struggled to meet the same standard. Desserts were slightly poor. The panacotta was too firm and gelatinous. Sashika visited Cha Chaan Teng on 12 Jan 2017

Was really nice, it was my second visit on a Travelzoo deal. Food was good, only comment my friend made was that the panna cotta was too gelatinous. The popcorn beef was a highlight, and also the hedgehog doughnuts. I ordered my cocktail during happy hour and the waitress didn't put it through until after happy hour, so i had to pay an extra £3 which was really irritiating. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 05 Jan 2017

The food was lovely but we didn't have one waiter or waitress, we had multiple and they seemed a bit all of over the place despite it being empty because we were one of the first diners of the night. They also didn't have a clue about the theatre deal. We purchased theatre tickets and our meal together as a package and this restaurant is on the list. so we booked our table about a week before and that was fine, no problems at all. But when we arrived, and said we had the theatre deal, they didn't know if we should have a different menu or not and wanted to charge us for the theatre package again on top of what we had already paid so we spent the first 10 minutes of our meal deliberating with the staff with what we should and shouldn't pay and the whole point of us buying the theatre package was that all of that was taken care of pre meal. Basically, the food was really nice but the staff weren't very with it. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 19 Nov 2016

Food did not live up to the decor. What felt like a classy Shanghai cocktail bar, served up food that could have come from my local takeaway. Visited on a Monday (maybe chef's day off) and selected the 3 course set menu. Everything tasted a bit old, the popcorn beef was actually burnt. Then perhaps it was our fault for selecting too many noodle dishes, but there were too many noodles and not enough taste variations. And the aubergine side dish? What was that? Inedible aubergine cores, that were very hard despite somehow being soaked in oil. Very disappointing and would not recommending to anyone. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 14 Nov 2016

Went for dinner with my wife last Saturday. What a lovely surprise the restaurant was from the funky bar to the fabulous food with very friendly servers. We had so much food, we even took home a doggy bag as we didn't want to miss out on the leftover food. To round off the meal, try that 70s classic - arctic roll - it is not to be missed. Will certainly go again and will make sure we sample cocktails in the bar beforehand. visited Cha Chaan Teng on 12 Nov 2016
