Located within the London Museum's new Smithfield home, the Temperance Cocoa Rooms brings a historic London cocoa house concept into the modern day. Inspired by the former Lockhart's Cocoa Rooms that once operated on the site, the café reimagines the Victorian-era idea of an alcohol-free meeting place, offering a welcoming space for visitors to socialise over coffee, hot chocolate and food throughout the day and into the evening.
At the heart of the menu are customisable hot chocolates, coffee mocktails and a bespoke ginger beer recipe, alongside pastries, soups, toasties and freshly made sandwiches. Signature bakes draw inspiration from London's history as a global trading city, while the drinks menu offers a contemporary take on classic cocoa house traditions. Designed as an alternative to the capital's pub culture, the café caters to everyone from morning coffee drinkers to those looking for a late-night spot to meet friends without alcohol.
Reflecting both the heritage of the building and the evolving culture of the capital, the two-storey space retains historic features uncovered during the restoration while introducing a warm, contemporary design. With space for community events, talks and informal gatherings, the Temperance Cocoa Rooms aims to be much more than a museum café, celebrating London's past while embracing new ways to eat, drink and connect.
