One of the staff - Jack - seemed to care about our table but we were served by 3 staff in total and between them got a lot wrong. My daughters main (avocado and salmon) was wrong - the waitress had mixed it up with the non salmon version. My main was 25 mins later than all of the others and on the menu the bream came with mushrooms and cauliflower puree, and I received mange tout and runner beans (neither of which I am overly fond of) and my daughters chocolate brownie arrived 8 -10 minutes later than her friends (after a reminder). It seems your restaurant staff do not know their job. My main was taken off the bill, which I appreciate but I would have preferred to have paid full for a good experience. My daughter also said her brownie was tasteless (and I have never heard her complain about a chocolate dessert before) and my wife who likes her burger well done said hers was burnt. visited The Dog and Fox on 24 Jun 2017

We have visited this pub on a few occasions and always had a good time BUT our last visit was definitely the exception. The first issue was with the drinks. Some basics drinks such as sweet martini, sherry, apple juice were not available. They didn't seem to know the different between a dry and a sweet martini. Then the food. They ran out of sea bass but hadn't told our waitress so one of our party received no food until we enquired so had to eat at a different time once she has selected something else from the menu. Another had a salad - but no other ingredient apart from 3 chickpeas and a lettuce was evident on the plate. The whole evening was like a fawlty towers scene. The waitress dealt with the situation extremely well so we had no issue with her service but she was coping with very difficult support teams both in the kitchen and behind the bar. Disappointing I think is my summary. visited The Dog and Fox on 14 Jun 2017

Disappointing from the food perspective. One main course was forgotten and came much later than others. The terrine was not great and the fish main course very dry. I appreciate we were a big group but we did pre order and the rest of the pub was quiet on the food front. I had chosen the venue as food normally so good. visited The Dog and Fox on 31 May 2017

Lovely venue, excellent roast, fab service from an attentive waitress. Only reasons for not giving 5 were the level of cleanliness of the toilet and the Eton mess dessert which was a lump of cream and a tiny amount of strawberries and meringue. Overall a great venue for a family catch up on a Sunday. visited The Dog and Fox on 29 May 2017

We were all really happy after our night at The Dog and Fox. It started off a bit disorganised - when a starter was given to the wrong person, and it was hard to hear the names called up, and the wine only was served by one person - we solved it by writing a list of names and where they were sat on the table and putting the wine on the table to serve ourselves. After this everything went perfect ! Thank you so much visited The Dog and Fox on 27 May 2017

Very slow service and overpriced. The mains were good, but starter was boring and pudding was burned. I've been coming here for 7+ years and since the refurb the quality has really dropped. Fun atmosphere, but have dinner elsewhere. visited The Dog and Fox on 26 May 2017

We couldn't be happier with the evening and the service we got from Phillipa and her amazing team. We received a 100% success rate from the delegates on the pub quiz in the library and the private dinner in the dining hall. These delegates can be pretty hard to impress, but they had an amazing time. Phillipa's attention to detail, service and personal endeavors, plus the flexibility offered to us were bar none. The ambiance, food and overall experience was perfect. We'll be recommending you for sure. I cannot express how grateful I am to Phillipa, she was fully committed and great to work with. I would like to say this was a one off but we have visited previously on more than one occasion and the service has always been poor. We had the most dreadful service, the number of mistakes made are too many to list but the highlights include a stone cold coffee - possibly someone else's left overs and a prawn salad featuring chicken instead - oh and starters served after the main course..... visited The Dog and Fox on 14 May 2017

Food ok. Ordered 2 medium glasses of wine but were brought large ones - pointed out to waiting staff to avoid overcharging. Husband's cauliflower gratin was underwhelming. Whilst waiting for pud a member of waiting staff asked if we were ready for mains. Staff cleared the table of mains while I was still eating. Tea/coffee were brought between mains and pud rather than after. My pud served with spoon inside the cream so had to clean the handle on my napkin. visited The Dog and Fox on 14 May 2017

0 stars. Terrible. Food for the children came out quickly, but waited an hour and 15 mins for the adults with one order forgotten and 1 sent back. Prawn and chicken salad had 3 tiny bits of chicken and 3 prawns. All for £15! Got it sent back and had the pasta - watery sauce and disappointing again for the price. Far too much constant table attention and served by 4 different people. Won't be returning which is a shame because the place had come recommended. Made sure to get coffee and desert in a different restaurant - unfortunately a chain, but much better quality and value. visited The Dog and Fox on 13 May 2017

Food was nice but my friend's had to be sent back as the chicken in the burger was burnt and her chips were cold. By the time her's then arrived people were nearly finished. Also they tried to take back our ketchup/mayo half way through our meal to give them to other diners which was annoying as we were still using them. I booked a table for my parents to celebrate my mum's birthday for Sunday brunch. My mum was delighted when they were put on a table near the window which is what I requested and they kindly came over to wish her a happy birthday and to bring her a glass of champagne. Unfortunately not great. Slow service. All a little chaotic. Roast dinner (pork belly) comprised an oversized overcooked Yorkshire Pudding which hid a single cut of pork belly which in turn was 2 mouthfulls of meat. It was Bank Holiday but an established place such as this should be able to cope with 100% of covers taken. I am a frequent visitor so wasn't impressed. visited The Dog and Fox on 01 May 2017

My friend had recommended this pub and I was very much looking forward to the visit. The exterior and interior were great and it was very lively and inviting. Unfortunately, this was as good as it got. We were stuck in a corner with a draft. It didn't bother me too much as it was busy but as we booked in advance, I thought we might be assigned a nicer table. Our food took 45 - 50 minutes. I appreciate that it was very busy, and the waitress kindly gave us some bread and butter while we waited, but we witnessed people in bigger groups who ordered after us get their food first and it was just too long a wait. When the food eventually arrived, my grandmother's sausages were slightly burnt and my Grandad only received 2 sausages while she had 3. My vegetarian roast had overcooked potatoes and undercooked cauliflower. I hate to complain but having waited all that time for it, and for the price, it was really poor. We asked for the missing sausage and for my meal to be changed. The waitresses were great and saw to our problems as best as they could but the overall experience was bad. It's sad as it was such a lovely pub and I was really hoping for great things. We decided we would not be staying for pudding and it's unlikely we'll return. visited The Dog and Fox on 01 May 2017

Incredibly poor experience start to finish. I organised a family event there for about 20 people. As the date arrived they prompted me to provide a final number of attendees and their menu choices, which I did. The online ordering system basically came up with an incorrect order so I typed the order on a word document and emailed the events manageress. From that point there was absolute radio silence from them; I called them and emailed them numerous times the week before the event to ensure they had received the order and that it made sense. Not one response despite 3 or 4 calls a day, they just do not answer the phone! Eventually got through to someone the day before the event who couldn't find the email I sent or the paper copy I physically dropped off to them. Their excuse was that the events manageress was on holiday and had taken the order with her. So I left another copy of the order with them confirming the time we are going to be there and pre ordering drinks etc. On the evening itself we arrived it transpired 30 minutes before we were expected. As such nothing was prepared, no drinks, area still occupied by the previous group and our guests left milling around. Our guests were now in the way of one particularly rude member of staff, the elusive events manageress who made it her mission to tut, pester and aggressively ensure that our guests knew they were getting in her way. It was embarrassing and unprofessional. She then took objection to me pointing out we had informed them we were arriving at that time. She pointed me to the terms and conditions of the booking, the fact that she had 6 other events that day and how the other parties were far more organised than me. Her manner was totally out of order and she frankly did her utmost to ruin our evening. I am pretty well organised and spent the best part of 2 weeks chasing this individual down to ensure everything would run smoothly to then be shouted down in front of a pub full of people is totally unacceptable. The other members of staff did really well and apologised on behalf of the events manageress but by then the damage was done. Food was good and the bar staff were doing their best but the events manageress needs some customer service training! Thankfully at least you have reopened the Fire Stable so I never have to step foot in the Dog & Fox again. visited The Dog and Fox on 29 Apr 2017

when we arrived we were shown to our table and ordered some drinks two beers and two wines we were advised that one of the wines chosen was not available so selected a different variety with two additional drinks for additional guests (table for six ). After waiting for 30 minutes and chasing the waitress we were advised that the additional drinks order had been misplaced. we then decided that we could not wait any longer and cancelled the drinks order and notified the waitress that we no longer wanted to dine as no order of food had been placed we had been seated for 45 minutes. no apology was offered for extremely poor service only a bill for £20 for the 3 drinks that we received We paid this and went to the Cau restaurant where we were made very welcome i will not return to the dog and fox to eat the service was appalling as was the feeble apologies from the manager. visited The Dog and Fox on 19 Apr 2017

Really wanted to enjoy this meal as the pub has been recommended by friends and I brought family from overseas to enjoy an Easter roast. The staff were friendly and the food was tasty; except for what was burnt. I have to imagine the cook was under a lot of pressure it being Easter and a Sunday. The food finally arrived and one dish had to be sent back as it was burnt, my father's dish arrived about 20min after the rest of us. A free drink was offered as an apology. My wife and I shared a toast pheasant, it tasted good but was cooked to a crisp. We decided we would go elsewhere for dessert. Bit of a shame... was really hoping for it to be as good as people said it would be. visited The Dog and Fox on 16 Apr 2017

What a shame! Such a nice pub but so many problems. Firstly when I made a booking for 2pm I was emailed and told they don't book tables during that time frame on Sundays so I would have to book at midday or 4pm. I said that was fine and booked for midday. When I arrived yesterday (with a party of 10) I was told my booking was at 14.00....I then explained the situation and had to show the waitress the email convo, at which point she sorted us a table in the bar which was great for our needs. We all ordered food and it was really quite disappointing, nobody on the table enjoyed their meal. In fact one of our guests actually complained and was told by the waitress " Yeah it's an unspoken rule here that we work here but don't eat here" what a great saleswoman she was! All in all a bit of a shambles and the food was a real let down. Drinks are good though and its a nice spot. visited The Dog and Fox on 02 Apr 2017

I don't usually write reviews, however I feel somewhat compelled to do so as our last visit on Saturday, 25th March was abominable! I had booked a table in advance for 4 people and mentioned there would be a baby in a pram so ideally would want to be out of the way from what we suspected would be a busy day due to the wonderful weather and lots of people being out and about! We were seated right next to the pass so traffic to and from the kitchen made our experience very frantic! We quickly became aware there was a private event going on in a private room and the logistics of this made the staff forget all other tables to accommodate this large party. We heard all the chaos in the kitchen unravel and it made our visit quite unpleasant. When catching up with friends on a weekend, the last thing you want to be involved in is kitchen staff and waiting staff swearing and cursing! Unfortunately, we waited over 1.5 hrs for our meals and no one came to apologise for the wait and to make matters worse, our food was cold! All in all a horrendous visit and we are thoroughly disappointed! I don't think the waiting staff treated us particularly well and we felt we were in the way, when we in fact our the guests! I do hope this can be resolved and would hate to have this as my last thoughts on what I always thought was a wonderful gastro pub! #disappointedfoodie visited The Dog and Fox on 25 Mar 2017

Portion sizes need reviewing. The plates of burgers and fries had a large space on the plate that looked like it was missing something else, eg a side salad or coleslaw. Tasty but all our mains were rather salty. Similarly the chocolate brownie looked a little frugal served on a large plate, whereas the blackberry & apple dessert was enormous. We also waited an hour for our food! However the waitress was lovely. The reserved signs need to be more obvious and people were just walking in and taking any seats, leading to irritation when they have to be moved. A bit more order would be good. But nice environment and location. visited The Dog and Fox on 25 Mar 2017

Staff seemed very rushed yet the restaurant area was not even full. I had to ask for our bottle of wine twice because our food had arrived and we still had not received our drinks (having ordered them first). I had to ask for cutlery when my main course arrived as we were left without. I left a tip but I don't believe the staff did much to earn it. There was no care taken to ensure my husband and I enjoyed our evening. visited The Dog and Fox on 17 Mar 2017

The food was decent and the atmosphere good. Nice laid back approach to the timings/numbers on the table, but the service was poor overall. My friend ordered a salad with Halloumi and Avocado, it came up without either (chicken had been added instead?!) Another guest ordered a Virgin Mojito having already had one, only to be told 'We don't make them.'?! The best (worst) was when my wife she's the barman to break a twenty and was told 'No, I'm too busy.'!!?! visited The Dog and Fox on 11 Mar 2017

A very interesting & well designed venue; high ceilings, large mirrors, fascinating memorabilia and artefacts on the walls. Good service, polite and efficient. Food was fine, tasty and very good but not especially notable. Only criticism was dirty cutlery which had to be returned. Toilets were clean and well aired, great to see 'Angela' posters. visited The Dog and Fox on 07 Mar 2017

Asked for a table to accommodate 3 buggies when booking, but table wasn't suitable but luckily nearby table was available to sit 10 of us and 2 highchairs so we moved. Roast was tasty but Pork Belly rind wasn't hard. Provided crackling but 2 very thin small pieces. Asked to have roast parsnips instead of potatoes and got 2 measily small parnips. Gravy bit too watery. Yorkshire pudds gorgeous. Winter veg very nice. Not enough toffee sauce on Sticky date pudding so made it a bit dry. Sharing pheasant for 2 was very overdone and dry. Very relaxed atmosphere and food for 10 of us came out together. There was no rush and we stayed from 12 till about 5. There was a dog though that kept barking - needed to be told to leave visited The Dog and Fox on 05 Mar 2017

Disappointing. Firstly I asked on the booking (and called the pub) to request a quiet table as three people in my group have hearing difficulties (two with hearing aids). Our table was in a side room where sound echoed and noisy children were running riot (parents fault but when parents moved chairs so the children could play musical chairs and run around I call that a step too far, Restaurant Manager should have stepped in, completely unacceptable, we felt like we were at a childrens party). Three serving staff served us, only one should have been dedicated to our table instead of the constant change. Waiting staff were pleasant but not attentive. Side orders arrived before mains (should have all arrived together) and food arrived suspiciously early (less than 5 mins after ordering). The salad was bland and too chilled (straight from the fridge). The roast dinners had no green veg and when I ordered a cabbage side it was white! So no green veg available on the menu, unbelievable for sunday roast. We wanted the cheese for dessert but the waiter confirmed it was would arrive straight from the fridge (should always be served at room temperature for full flavour, waiter didn't seem to know this). Gorgeous character pub but very disappointing food and service standards (seem to have slipped since last year), we will not be going back to eat here. visited The Dog and Fox on 12 Feb 2017

The food was delicious but the service was absolutely appalling. The waiter appeared to be stoned, he could barely muster the energy to speak, made a point of not writing down any of our orders, which were subsequently wrong on more than one occasion. He evidently forget to put our dinner order through, and then tried to cover it up by saying that there were delays in the kitchen, which was mysterious because nobody else's orders were delayed. He then offered us drinks while we waited, we asked if these were free drinks to compensate us and he replied no. He slapped the food on the table with no comment. Our coffees were cold and spilt in the saucers when they arrived and we had to wait another 5 minutes for milk and sugar. We sent one back as it was too cold to drink and when a new one was brought back it was slapped on the table with no saucer. the deserts didn't arrive together and one bowl of ice cream had already melted by the time it arrived at the table. We eventually complained to a more senior member of staff who after some persuasion gave us a discount on our bill. Overall I think that the Dog and Fox needs to review its recruitment and/or training policies. visited The Dog and Fox on 19 Feb 2017

The food was average, not bad but nothing to write home about. The service was generally awful. The staff were more interested in talking to each other than actually working on the day. The starter of Camembert took 55 minutes to arrive which followed with the roast dinners arriving 2 minutes after that. The 4 roasts that came out were all unequally measured with one of the party recieving half an allotment of vegtables and no potato and another member receiving 4 potatoes and no vegtables. Another roast had hardly any gravy on it whilst the other was drowning in. When asked for some more gravy and some sauces for the roast (horseradish / mustard) we were given Ketchup and Mayo which was slightly odd. After the dinner we seemed to be ignored in terms of clearing away the plates and then once that it even happened we had to ask for the dessert menu. The final matter of asking for the bill was its own sort of tragedy. We asked 4 different people for the bill and then watched two of them say' yes il grab it and then go and chat with there colleagues in full view of us. After asking the slightly flustered manager she did arrive finally with the bill. All in all a thoroughly disappointing meal (although the 2 year of the group did appreciate the mac n cheese and possibly one of the best banana ice creams i have ever tasted.) visited The Dog and Fox on 05 Feb 2017

Also didn't ask if we wanted more drinks and didn't get more water when asked. Then when bringing our tea afterwards, he gave the tray to someone else which made it appear he no longer wanted to serve our table... visited The Dog and Fox on 31 Jan 2017

Very disappointing. We booked on line for a table for two at 4pm on Sunday 22nd January 2017. I was looking forward to the roast beef and my wife was going to have the Herb Crusted Salmon. We arrived at 4pm and our table was ready and given menues and from there on it was a disaster. Shortly after sitting at our table a lady came over and said that as we had not ordered by 4pm we had to order from the dinner menu notwithstanding that the website clearly states that the Sunday lunch menu runs from 12.00 to 17.00. I tried to talk to the lady to explain however she was just abrubt and rude. On the dinner menus we were given there was no Salmon so my wife had to choose the salad. We were left at our table and nobody wanted to serve us or at least see if we wanted a drink. After 10 minutes and having tried to get somebodies attention we were eventualy served and we ordered drinks and food at the same time. We had to wait ages for our food and when my wifes salad came it was wrong and the pork belly that I had ordered was luke warm. All a great shame as we had both been looking forward to trying this pub/restaurant for the first time. visited The Dog and Fox on 22 Jan 2017

I know that Boxing Day can be busy so I came in to book a table more than a fortnight before our visit. I was told that they were too busy to make the booking then and that I should do it online which is what I did. Imagine my disappointment when we arrived on Boxing Day to find that our table was directly in front of the very busy kitchen. I asked the manageress if we could move to a table which was free just to the side of the busy kitchen area. I was told that this was not possible as another group was expected. Well, that party never did arrive and remained free for the duration of our lunch. With her 'like it or lump it' approach to customer service we were left to enjoy our meal with the wonderful view of giant Hellmans buckets and industrial sized pots, with waiting staff carrying food out to the restaurant brushing past us all afternoon. In addition a friend who was dining there said that the front window table was also free for much if the afternoon. Any manager who is customer service orientated would have taken better care. I gave two stars because the food was good. visited The Dog and Fox on 26 Dec 2016

We were a group of 9, here for our Christmas drinks and meal. I tried to book a table and seats in the bar, and was told it was not possible and that there would be plenty of seats available. This was not the case and so we had an unpleasant hour or so, trying to get groups to give up their unused seats. The bar staff were surly and I would not rate the drinks experience much. But we had very good service in the restaurant. there were a number of corporate groups dining, but we had babies, children and dogs in the restaurant - I personally find it inappropriate in the evenings. My vegetarian meal was not very good. My companions found their meat dish all right, but not particularly impressive. We are regulars at the Dog and Fox but this was our first Christmas Dining experience. Booking and pre order of food was great. On the day we arrived just before our slot at 2pm, a party of 6 adults and a 3 year old. On booking we were assured that they would start serving food when we arrived. Despite having pre ordered our food and having a booking slot we didn't receive our starters until half past 3 and our main course until 4.25. As the service was so slow we ended up having to pop home to get the 3 year old a home cooked meal to eat at the pub, we had a late breakfast but she was hungry and despite numerous hints, questioning and then complaints are food was always 5 minutes away. As it was Xmas we all felt a little uneasy at having to complain to the staff but the situation was farcical. This was not unique to our table, the 3 tables surrounding us had the same delayed service all of us having sat down promptly at 2pm. The pub was due to shut at 5pm so having received our main so late it was no surprise to then find dessert, coffee and the offer of a bill all hurried into the last 35 minutes. The two stars are for the quality of the food albeit not the quantity with us having to ask for extras (4 potatos between 3 people seems a little inadequate), the helpfulness of some of the regular staff and the overall atmosphere despite the service issues. We received a free round of drinks, a free kids meal as we ended up self catering and 20% off the final bill due to the issues above. I can only imagine that someone became extremely greedy with the number of bookings per sitting and the kitchen could not cope with the sheer volume of orders. We will continue to visit the Dog & Fox as we love it as a pub. We will not be repeating our 3 hour 5 course Xmas dining experience, 1 course after an hour and a half and then 4 in 35 minutes is unacceptable. visited The Dog and Fox on 25 Dec 2016

In over thirty years as a regular customer of the Dog and Fox, this was by far my worst experience. It was supposed to be a family treat for two nieces and three great nieces. It became an embarrassment as we were informed that menu choices such as fish and chips were unavailable, that the salmon had been replaced by hake and that, in any case, the hake could not be served with chips. Three vegetarians made do with items from the sides menu, one of the lamb shanks and the belly pork were undercooked and the half-pint that was ordered became a full pint. The puddings, on the other hand, met with general approval. It will be a long time before our next visit. visited The Dog and Fox on 27 Dec 2016

All a bit of a shambles to be honest. They clearly weren't set up to cater for a full house on Christmas day. Our booking was at 1pm, we were served our main course at 3.40, some of it was cold. It then took another hour for dessert. We were in a group of 16 (across 2 bookings) and had young children and family who were becoming increasingly frustrated. Finally the bill was wrong - they charged us for 4 adults instead of 3 adults and 1 child and it took a further 20 minutes to rectify which seemed to involve some onerous manual override process meaning we didn't get a final itemised bill. The staff seemed hassled and confused throughout. Setting and atmosphere were lovely but not sure we'll be doing Christmas at the Dog & Fox again. visited The Dog and Fox on 25 Dec 2016
