Description

The Thirsty Bear, situated in Blackfriars, is a revolutionary pub that serves great food, moreish cocktails and has an extremely unique feature - a self-service bar. This consists of iPads on each table that allows you to place orders for food and drinks; to surf the internet; to select tracks on the bar’s Jukebox and to do something you possibly didn’t think of (though you probably did): buy beer that you can then instantly dispense from the tap on your table.

Due to its location, The Thirsty Bear is perfect for after-work drinks but at the same time it is a local pub. For those a bit further away, it is worth visiting this almost futuristic pub where pool is free and there is a jukebox to play your favourite tunes!

We booked a table for a friends birthday. The Ipad ordering system and table beer taps were not in working order and were taken out of action. Very disappointing considering this was the main reason for booking this up. Nice atmosphere, however bad experience for our first visit. Visited The Thirsty Bear on 2018-02-16

Great table to watch the 6 nations, really friendly staff and ordering from the ipad is a great idea. The thing that let it down was the food - just wasn't great quality. Chicken burgers were ok but the ribs and the veggie burger were a big let down. Would definitely recommend this place for drinks and sport but I would eat before I go. Incredibly unorganised pub with rude staff. When we arrived the tabs didn’t work and we constantly got other people’s drinks and food charged to our table. Lovely concept for a pub but the management is terrible. Visited The Thirsty Bear on 2018-01-30

Booked a table with a beer tap and iPad. Loved the speed of service and the food quality was great. One small niggle was the volume of the music. Luckily it was turned down during the football but for me it was too loud. I didn't want to say anything for fear of acting like my Dad. Have booked again for next week. Love it here. Slight early confusion over the setting up of the tab for the table (one of these days we'll get lucky and get a table with the actual beer taps on it), but otherwise the usual high quality experience. The 'juke box' option is pointless as the music can never be heard, even when there is no live TV sport. Visited The Thirsty Bear on 2017-12-12

the service was appalling; we waited 50 mins for fish and chips and then had to leave; we ordered 2 portions of rack of ribs and noone told us that there was only one left. One girl ordered a tuna salad with no dressing and when it arrived the waitress told her they did not put the dressing on but instead put olive oil and pesto - at what point someone did not hear NO dressing. orders were mixed up; we had too many chips that we did not order. basically we will definitely not be going back Visited The Thirsty Bear on 2017-12-07

Not as good as our last visit. We booked several weeks prior, but were seated upstairs instead of downstairs this time. The music and football commentary upstairs was so loud you had to shout to speak to the person next to you - not good for an annual reunion where we wanted to catch up over beers. The bar staff were very attentive and polite, the service was good but unfortunately due to overly loud sound system (which we did ask to be turned down a little, but it really was just a little), this means that instead of getting a 5 star review, I can only give it a 3 on this occasion. We had a work night out on a Sunday at The Thirsty Bear. After taking a minute or two to work out the ipad ordering system, we were able to pour our own pints and receive table service without leaving the table. Very enjoyable. Wish it was possible to switch some of the beef burgers for chicken instead without using the iPads. Would also be more enjoyable if music wasn't kept on all the way until a football match kicks off, it's too loud. Food was good but the iPad ordered 3 extra burgers that we didn't select. The management handled it quite well, but we did have to pay for one of the 3 additional burgers. Great food by a night of technical issues. We had a table for 8 with 2 iPads. We had to get here changes countless times and eventually could no longer use the taps on our table so those drinking Goose IPA could no longer have any. Spent more time going up to the bar staff (who were very friendly) to resolve the issues than at my table enjoying the evening. Really disappointing Visited The Thirsty Bear on 2017-08-03

The table we had booked wasn't prepared for our arrival (i.e. no iPad) and the card reader wouldn't work. We weren't moved to another prepared, working table despite being the only group in the pub. The waitress also took our frustration to be some kind of personal attack and simply said none of it was her fault, rather than apologising on behalf of the pub and seeking to remedy the situation. Once all that was out of the way we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. The system is very innovative and fun to use, and the beer selection was great. It's a shame that an establishment that prides itself on being fully booked night after night can't make sure it is prepared for its patrons to turn up. Will definitely come again, but not with a large group. Visited The Thirsty Bear on 2017-07-27

The RPFC nomads committee would like to thank the staff of The Thirsty Bear for having us. We hosted a breakfast on Saturday the 8th of July to watch the final Lions test. It could be the finest place to watch sport in London. A self-proclaimed “Pub Revolutionised”. You may have been to the pub before but if not it’s a beauty. http://thethirstybear.com/ The salient points include: · Conveniently located just a 5 minute walk from Waterloo for your boozing pleasure. · Both iPads and a selection of beer taps on the table - You will not miss a minute of game time waiting for the helpful staff to pour your cleansing ale or garnish your Bloody Mary; · 100% coverage of the pub in terms of TV visibility with more flat screens than NASA ground control; · Cinema style Dolby surround sound will warp your fragile little minds; · A limited edition breakfast menu exclusively for you; · Seats so comfortable that you will melt. · Once you have finished all the table beer there is apparently a wall of beer; · Home to The Grizzly Bear Burger ™; · Last but certainly not least the stars aligned so that all of these things that you know and love could be provided at 8am. Lovely food, good service and helpful staff. I had booked a table but there did not seem to be any knowledge of the booking. When I made the booking, it stated that the table would be held for 20 mins or longer if I let them know if we were going to be late. We were an hour late due to an incident affecting transport so I did e-mail and try to ring, however this seemed to be lost in the mist. Happily there was a free table. My suggestion would be; don't have a booking service if you can't make it work. Visited The Thirsty Bear on 2017-05-28

The quality of the beer was not that good. we're all used to excellent craft beer and this was cloudy out of date real ale or lager that was a bit warm and just didnt taste good. Also the music was so loud and annoying that we just left in the end. a shame as the food 'looked' fantastic. We were talking abut your place later and felt that you have a bit of a an identity crisis. it felt like a disco, come sports bar come ale house come cocktail bar designed for 17 year old music tastes. Hey folks, Just a little bit of feedback at a bit of disappointment I had with my booking last night. We've used the pub on a number of occasions to watch football by booking in advance and have had a good time. However, when I arrived a little before seven yesterday I was disappointed to see us given a table that at best fits 7 people, despite booking for 10. I eventually managed to pull it out from the wall so that we could fit two more at the end. However, despite specifying we were coming to watch the football, there was only one tv that we could see from the table, which was fine for some people at the table but not everyone. We quickly realised a few of the group were struggling to see the tv properly when the game started and luckily we managed to swap our table with another smaller group who had a better view of more tvs. I appreciate it's difficult to accomodate ten people but I felt there was a slight lack of effort put in to do so. There were only five chairs at the table when I arrived, for example. Anyway, I'm a huge fan of your pub. The staff are friendly, the prices are reasonable and the food is great. I will be back, but this time we were a little disappointed, as regular bookers. Thanks, Niall Visited The Thirsty Bear on 2017-05-11

Unfortunately the kitchen was closed due a fault so we had to go a different bar instead. It's a shame because Thirsty Bear came highly recommended and I haven't been there before Visited The Thirsty Bear on 2017-03-13

Great as always. First time we've visited since the refurb and I like the updates to the ipad system. Food was great but the build-a-burger option is gone, which was a huge disappointment. Overall a really enjoyable and fun evening. Visited The Thirsty Bear on 2017-03-10

IPad wasn't working when we arrived so had to chase people around to fix it. Slow service. Drinks were fast but food didn't come out for half an hour. Well mine anyway and then my husbands 10 minutes later after chasing - his chips were cold. Clicked the button to pay the bill and waited 20 minutes with nobody coming over. Went downstairs to pay and the girl told us someone was upstairs with the card machine - we refused to go back up so waited another 5 minutes for them to come back down. Probably won't go again.... SO extortionate as well for a place that has the most disgusting toilets this side of the river. Visited The Thirsty Bear on 2017-03-04

Great concept of pouring drinks and ordering food from the table, but the food service is very slow. The music was also way too loud to have a decent conversation - it is still supposed to be a pub, right? Visited The Thirsty Bear on 2017-03-02

We found people on our reserved table upon arrival, and then had to seek a chair for the 8th person that did not have a seat, to discover that it had been moved from our table to the adjacent table, and was being kept as a seat for their rucksack. Other than that, it was a splendid evening with efficient service. Visited The Thirsty Bear on 2017-02-16

Really good location and love the idea of ordering on IPads and just pouring yourself a pint. Having said this I was disappointed by the explanation we were given. I didn't realise each person had to get a'Tab', which meant 17 different tabs. So it was a little difficult to get started and we had a few issues with how frothy the beer came out. Sadly the pumps at the tables were not working and the there was something wrong with the tab system. Cheeky charging to choose the music too. The boys who were running upstairs bar were really polite, burger tasty, good atmosphere. Worth a stop by. Visited The Thirsty Bear on 2017-02-11

Nice bar and good atmosphere! Service was really quick from the Ipads. We had two tables and one of the ipads didn't work - we used the other ipad to call someone and no-one came! The only annoying thing would be if you didn't like the beer on the table allocated to you, the novelty would be lost then! Visited The Thirsty Bear on 2017-02-03

We had a great night on Friday at our private party upstairs, a leaving party for 20 staff. The food was great the venue was perfect and the service was spot on. The only thing I didn't really appreciate was being asked by the manager at 5pm to put my card behind the bar to cover any shortfall in the minimum spend! The party didn't finish until 12 o'clock!!! Totally unnecessary and it took the shine off my evening if the truth be told. Shame. (We did hit the min spend btw!) Visited The Thirsty Bear on 2017-01-27

Great beer selection, really good food, all fairly priced for central London (not cheap, but not silly). Lots of room and lots of TVs to watch the sport. They were happy to turn the NFL on for us. Didn't use iPad/beer pour system as it was quiet, but would try next time. Visited The Thirsty Bear on 2017-01-15

The tap was confusing to use at the beginning when there's a large group and took us ages to get our first round , but the reserved space is really nice and once we got the touch pad system figured out it was fine. Visited The Thirsty Bear on 2017-01-10

Great place. Good beer and food was top notch. Only issue was that we had 2 tables and the card didn't work on both. Several visits to the bar to get it reset so we didn't buy as much beer as we could have. Will definitely be coming back. Visited The Thirsty Bear on 2016-12-22

All in all a fun and different experience. Service was friendly and welcoming. A few issues though. My burger bun didn't hold at all and was sloppy. Wedges were divine! We also ordered a special lunch deal that wasnt available on a Saturday. Perhaps this should be unavailable to order via the tablets at such times. A suggestion may be to make the sky sports available on the tablets. That way the friend who has his back to the screens can still watch. Thanks for something different.
