Description

Housed in an elegant hotel, the Alma in Wandsworth combines all the comforts that we've come to love about a classic pub with the sleek practicality of a modern restaurant. The bar itself is made of deep mahogany, and seems to have soaked up some of the character of their guests who undoubtedly filled the room with laughter and cheer.

Alongside their quaint decor, the drinks and food menus are capable of putting a smile on even the most cynical faces. The team behind this venture are committed to showcasing a range of cask ales and beers, working closely with the nearby Sam Brooks Brewery and Twickenham Ales. And then there's the dinner menu. Adding their own personal tweaks and amendments to an array of traditional dishes, the chefs have really let their imaginations run wild; from ale battered fish and chips to American burgers with peanut butter, you'll leave a few pounds heavier and with a giant sauce-stained smile etched on your face.

I hesitated before sending this as so negative but we had a pretty awful night at The Alma on Saturday. This was our first time visiting and neither realised or were warned that the crowds for the rugby in the bar next door would be so significant. Once in the restaurant we were placed n a narrow area next to a group of 16 people enjoying a party. Between the noise from the bar and the noise from the table next door it was impossible to hold a conversation which was pretty disappointing for my parents who had travelled an hour to get there and my kids who were looking forward to their company. As bad as the atmosphere was the food was as poor. My daughter ordered a rib-eye steak that we were later charged £36.75 for, and £4 for a pot of congealed sauce. The steak was ordered medium-rare but was served well done and she almost choked at one point. We complained about this but were still charged in full. Anyway, I am sure there are better days to visit and maybe we were unlucky with the food but what was meant to be a nice family meal became a really unpleasant, expensive hour. visited The Alma Wandsworth on 18 Nov 2017

Love the convenient location and cool atmosphere of The Alma opposite Wandsworth Town station. Food is nice, although a bit pricey, but service is good. My only quibble this time is that I couldn't get through on the phone the night before to book a table, and - although I left a message for a call-back, no-one did (I booked online in the end). visited The Alma Wandsworth on 13 Nov 2017

The Brampford room was perfect - very light and spacious. I can't fault Valerie - she was so efficient and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was excellent, but there was quite a long wait for all the main courses to come out, so that some peoples food was quite cold by the time we all got to eat. I was very happy with the service and will definitely use the facilities again. visited The Alma Wandsworth on 05 Nov 2017

I really like this place and it has historically been my 'go to' for a Sunday Roast. Perhaps I went too late in the day but they had ran out of a lot of options. The food was nice but the portions a bit small in terms of veg. Used to get a big bowl to share on the table whereas now its on the plate and a bit sparse. Still great but not as good as previous. Service was great. visited The Alma Wandsworth on 05 Nov 2017

The Alma is one of those cosy, understated & classy "gems" of South West London. Vastly under-rated as a restaurant, it serves up the most delicious food in a polished, Victorian setting. Anything from tenderised game, fresh seafood or Hereford beef is served promptly, presented perfectly, and is worthy of a restaurant in its own right, rather than attached to the bar as it is in this case. Just gorgeous - perfect for family gatherings, friend groups or couples alike. I love eating here. 5 stars. Catherine visited The Alma Wandsworth on 31 Oct 2017

We went there for roast dinner at 6.30pm and they were out of roast, they serve food until 9.30pm. Rump steak wasn't as good as I would expect from a £20 steak. We ordered tawny port for dessert and they served ruby. Everything just pretty average. visited The Alma Wandsworth on 29 Oct 2017

I suppose I only have one gripe/issue - water. Being offered water when you sit down is great but for me tap water is fine to get 'bottled' water and the cost that carries (which is not mentioned on the menu) is a serious gripe of mine. Without instruction to the contrary tap water should be serves - or at least offered. This won't stop me coming back but I do find it annoying. Otherwise excellent. Our second bottle was from the tap and chilled which is all re require! visited The Alma Wandsworth on 22 Oct 2017

We had hired the meeting room for the day, as we have for the past few years for an annual away day, but this time the service felt a bit lacking. Tea and coffee wasn't set up for our arrival, and it was very much us asking for things throughout the day, rather than refreshments being replenished. We had to ask for a bin bag, cups and saucers, milk, tea bags, fresh coffee and more hot water. The lady I asked in the main eating area seemed irritated that I had asked her for anything. It's a beautiful hotel and setting, but it would have been nice to have a bit more attention during the day. visited The Alma Wandsworth on 13 Sep 2017

Generally we were very pleased with the childrens party we held (this was our second year running for this and it works so well in the big room). Jonathan looked after us so well. There was one thing though we were a bit surprised/confused by - we had asked for their to be tea and coffee available for up to 20 people - in the end only about 3 people had hot drinks as they rather had alcohol or lime cordial - but we were still charged for SEVERAL Americano's so our bill was far bigger than expected. Can anything be done about this as I am not sure it is fair. Otherwise, we were thrilled. Thank you. Caroline visited The Alma Wandsworth on 02 Sep 2017

This is a lovely neighbourhood restaurant; the sort of place that explains the decline in home entertaining. The menu is interesting, varied and tasty. The wine list is very well chosen and priced. The dining area is attractive, airy well-lit and roomy enough to allow one's own space. The serving team are friendly, helpful and efficient. We had a family celebration in the room above the bar. The first thing we loved about our experience was the heavenly air conditioning! Unexpected and very welcome on an extremely hot Summmer's day. The Bramford Room at The Alma was a wonderful setting for my evening of Storytelling - Life death and dreams along the way, a show which was part of the Wandsworth Arts Fringe 2017. Valeria, the events manager was friendly and helpful. The room was set up exactly as we asked. It is a beautiful room. As the evening was raising money for Cancer Research they donated us the room. It was a pleasure to work with them. Hannah Need, Storyteller of Southfields visited The Alma Wandsworth on 11 May 2017

Overall, it was an unsatisfactory experience for me and one I don't intend to repeat. I'd chosen the Alma, because I live in Trinity Road, I am a big fan of Young's brewery, I have been going to my local, the County Arms, since 1980 and also the Nightingale in Nightingale Lane. I visited the Alma, knowing it to be a Young's venue and felt it would be an appropriate venue, to present my show, A Meeting of Minds, as part of the Wandsworth Arts Festival. To my extreme disappointment, although the staff were nice and friendly, I found them to be totally uninformed about my show and the Wandsworth Festival. I had delivered leaflets and posters, a few weeks before the first performance on the 7th May, only a few leaflets were placed by the door and no posters were put up, despite me visiting the venue a number of times - the only poster that was put up, was put up, by me, in the restaurant, on Friday 5th May, when my wife and I had dinner there - I was told, they couldn't find the posters. The only person who showed some interest in my show was the manager, Valeria Gurinovics - then to crown it all, I was told I couldn't put my event on your Events Board, because it wasn't a Young's event! It was part of the Wandsworth Arts Festival and you were one of the prime venues - what more do you want! I felt, as though, nobody knew was knew what was going on at all - there was 'no connect' between the staff or myself - apart from the assistant managers - none of the staff knew anything about the show - there were no signs directing people up to the show - so when the audience arrived, on both nights, they didn't know where to go, because none of the posters that I had provided were put up. My show was a very quiet, intimate show, about two of our greatest poets, Betjeman and Larkin, demanding a great deal of concentration - in retrospect, had I been made aware that on the first evening, Sunday 7th May, there would be live music in the bar below and on the 14th, a loud football match, I would not have booked the venue - although, there appears to be some sound proofing, it did not block out all of the noise and, obviously, particularly on the 14th, there was a crowded and loud bar of people, which didn't fit with the feel of the show. Obviously, this has the potential to be a good performing venue but probably more suited to a younger audience - maybe, a comedy night, rather than a more serious theatrical piece like mine. I'm sorry that I won't be using the venue again, but I thought it important to give you my feedback. Yours sincerely, Martin Wimbush visited The Alma Wandsworth on 14 May 2017

Came from south east London over the west London for my girlfriends birthday, and she is 9 months pregnant so potentially our last meal before becoming parents, so wanted to book somewhere nice. I had heard a lot of good things and as being in the top 30 gastro pubs in the U.K. In the 2017 list was expecting good things. The starters were ok, chicken liver parfait was nice but would have expected better presentation and would have been better with brioche. My girlfriend had the mushrooms on sourdough, which was nice but under seasoned and was very bland. I had the pork belly for main which was very nice and more what I expected, however my partner had rolled cod and chorizo... When it arrived it was raw! So we Sent it back and then we were told they would make it again and it would be four minutes.... When the second one came it was raw again!!! We were then told this is how it was supposed it to be... Some parts were cooked but some was like jelly and see through in the middle so was in-edible especially for someone pregnant. So we sent it back again. By this time I had finished mine. We were offered another main but by this time didn't want it and didn't want to wait and my Girlfriend didn't want to eat alone. Also there were some flies in the restaurant around our table. The general service/attentiveness was poor. we had a complementary dessert which was offered as an apology Which is fine, but we left feeling very disappointed with the occasion and the meal. visited The Alma Wandsworth on 06 May 2017

The restaurant made special arrangements to house a party of 17 (including one guest with mobility problems) which made a birthday lunch a relaxed occasion. However, I did feel that there could have been more attention paid to asking if we needed more wine, bread, condiments etc. Another criticism was that the disabled toilet had a blackboard in front of the door and no space to open without hitting a chair occupied by a diner at the table nearest. A staff member did move the board and the diner moved her seat when she realised the situation. visited The Alma Wandsworth on 15 Apr 2017

We were so impressed by the service we received prior to th event and the room was set up beautifully and the food and drink were wonderful. However, our guests arrived at 3:30pm to absolutely no food. We had asked for lots of scones and cream and ham and the lady doing these had apparently been told they were for 4:30pm. It was really stressful chasing the staff for these when trying to host our guests too and really embarrassing that everyone had to wait around for them when some guests needed to leave at 4:30. When they finally arrived they were delicious and we did get a discount from the overall price which was great but sadly this did not make up for the timing error. Thanks, hope this helps. We booked for Sunday lunch and requested a seat in the bar area. When we arrived we were seated in the restaurant but this was not an issue as it was lovely. We had to wait c.5minutes to get menus and order drinks which was surprising as it was not that busy. The girl serving us was lovely and very attentive, esp when I required clarity on gluten free meal and dessert options. She even produced gf bread - albeit loaf slices but still nice to have the option. We ordered the pork belly and chefs roasts and both were delicious! Not alot of potatoes but the meat and veg portions more than made up for that. I ordered the lemon posset for dessert and it was also very enjoyable and a good sized portion. The only recommendation I have is to have some gluten free gravy for the roasts as it's not a proper roast without gravy :) visited The Alma Wandsworth on 26 Mar 2017

As a previous long time employer of Young's, i was disappointed in the service at the bar we ordered a black coffee 3 times, and waited 15 mins for it to turn up ! We was incorrectly told that our table was ready 4 times ! We than had to ask twice when it would be ready, 15 mins after table booking time, finally getting table 35 mins after booking time ! 2 people ordered Steak which was tough and Uneatable !!! this was exchange for roast beef, which was not that good also. When i received the Bill it did not include our Bar tab which was set up with our table number, Total bar bill was £70.00, but being a 'Young's man' with staff discount i told the staff, and it was corrected and paid in full. I feel that many people not happy with the service would not have pointed this mistake out. I can only suggest that the complete management of The Alma is rectified as quick as possible, so we do not lose to many customers. visited The Alma Wandsworth on 12 Mar 2017

Service was great at the start but when our waiter's shift ended it was poor. Meal was slow to arrive and time ticked on so long after the desert menu arrivedwe decided not to have any and left after paying the bill. A shame - was willing to pay for desert and coffee but had neither. Jack visited The Alma Wandsworth on 22 Feb 2017

I wrote a wonderful review for The Alma a few months ago but unfortunately on a visit a few weeks ago I cannot do the same. The new chef has completely changed the restaurant menu and it is more like pub grub which could be OK in the pub (if it was good food which it was not) but not for the restaurant. A very disappointing menu and even more disappointing food. Won't be going again for a long time. visited The Alma Wandsworth on 04 Jan 2017

The roasts get cold too quickly. It may be a bi-product of reheating, but the potatoes and the gravy in particular get cold too quickly. We waited half an hour for coffees at the end of the meal and even then they came out sporadically and two were forgotten. visited The Alma Wandsworth on 12 Feb 2017

Used to be my favourite pub for lunch but standards are not what they used to be. Went for lunch on Sat, weren't offered bread for the table & bottle of wine was given with screw cap on- not opened at table or offered a taste. Recent roast lunches have been really disappointing- small portions & slow service. Used to be fantastic with big veg plate for the table. Last time had Sunday lunch so disappointed wrote email for feedback- never acknowledged received or replied. visited The Alma Wandsworth on 11 Feb 2017

The only thing which was not good was the computer ordering system which closed too early and did not allow everyone time to respond. It is also too inflexible. The day was saved by the young woman who attended our party. She was excellent, sorted out all the orders and provided superb service through the meal. The food was of a very high quality and we could not have been better looked after. We shall return for this annual celebration in 2018. visited The Alma Wandsworth on 13 Jan 2017

Hi, I have been coming to the Alma for years. This experience wasn't ideal. Waiter had no clue what was going on, what gins were on the menu, took ages to take our order, 25 minutes to get a drink, and then was over 1h15 mins to get out 1st course. When the food arrived that has also gone down hill, I presume maybe there has been a change in the kitchen. Burger was over cooked, eggs were over cooked. I hope this is just a minor blip as I have had well over 20 meals in the Alma with no issue. It is a great pub. When you have new staff clearly they need to be trained before they start service. visited The Alma Wandsworth on 26 Dec 2016

Really disappointing, table not ready at appointed time, then had to ask on progress of table availability. Poor service, table dirty (asked for it to be cleaned and told it had been scrubbed previously), food average and lukewarm, had to ask for more vegetables. I expect to pay a premium for Christmas Day but this was poor value for money. We won't be doing that again and also unlikely to go for Sunday lunch again, has put us off the Alma completely. visited The Alma Wandsworth on 25 Dec 2016

Service was fantastic, thank you! And the wine delicious. However the lambs lettuce I had with my steak (instead of chips) was gritty (not washed properly) and the bearnaise sauce lacked flavour.... more of a hollondaise . My second disappointing meal sadly, as the last time I was there and had the vegetarian option of butter nut squash with onions and quinoa it was virtually indelible and cold. Disappointing as you can normally always count on the Alma and I am usually a huge fan. visited The Alma Wandsworth on 26 Dec 2016

We were extremely disappointed with the food and the service that we experienced at The Alma on Boxing Day, having previously eaten at this restaurant on several occasions when the food and service were very good. Alas, on Boxing Day, the food and service were way below the normal standard. The vegetables had obviously been pre cooked some time ago, and the Belly of Pork which was the most popular choice amongst our table, was a plate of grease. The advocado and crab starter was totally unacceptable as there was nothing fresh about either ingredient. We did not complain because it was Boxing Day and was meant to be a joyous family occasion. Service was apauling with unacceptable waiting time between each course and one member of our party's main course was completely forgotten until we reminded the kitchen and it arrived 15 minutes after everyone else's main course. A very sad end to the holiday and now The Alma has five local families who will probably never eat there again. visited The Alma Wandsworth on 26 Dec 2016

We were a party of four and one meal arrived 20 minutes before the other three then we waited a considerable time at least 15 minutes for one desert after one had arrived. I know you are bust at this time of year but you should have taken off the desert from the bill as by the time it came the person did not want it . When I told a member of staff why it wasn't eaten they only said sorry and didn't off er any type of compensation. Quality of food was fine but service appalling . visited The Alma Wandsworth on 18 Dec 2016

Service friendly and attentive which is to your credit. Had lunch with a client which was disappointing. Rump steak cooked almost blue and not medium rare as requested thus making it tough and chewy. Chips were cold. Peppercorn sauce - not sure how your recipe works but for me a peppercorn sauce is creamy, the one I had served with my steak was more of a peppercorn water? Shame for the food but staff excellent. visited The Alma Wandsworth on 15 Dec 2016

We had our xmas dinner at The Alma yesterday but sadly the food was average especially the desserts. One of my friends had xmas pudding but the pudding was too dense and the sauce was watery. I had the fudge cake but again it was just very average. My friends had the cheesecake with burned pastry at the bottom. Starters and mains were good except the roaster cod which was tasteless. The waiter also forgot to take out the deposit from the bill which was rectified. I have been coming here for more than 3 years and really wanted to give you 5 stars review but this visit didn't meet your normal standard. Hopefully this is just once off. I still think this pub is a great place to hang out and will likely be back for my favourite Sunday roast. visited The Alma Wandsworth on 10 Dec 2016
