Description

Housed in an elegant hotel, the Alma in Wandsworth combines all the comforts that we've come to love about a classic pub with the sleek practicality of a modern restaurant. The bar itself is made of deep mahogany, and seems to have soaked up some of the character of their guests who undoubtedly filled the room with laughter and cheer.

Alongside their quaint decor, the drinks and food menus are capable of putting a smile on even the most cynical faces. The team behind this venture are committed to showcasing a range of cask ales and beers, working closely with the nearby Sam Brooks Brewery and Twickenham Ales. And then there's the dinner menu. Adding their own personal tweaks and amendments to an array of traditional dishes, the chefs have really let their imaginations run wild; from ale battered fish and chips to American burgers with peanut butter, you'll leave a few pounds heavier and with a giant sauce-stained smile etched on your face.

It was the Engalnd vs Wales rugby night. It was lively. Staff all were new and helpful. Steak and burgers were good quality but deserts were poor quality. Need more finesse and I would encourage to invest in an ice cream machine. Visited The Alma Wandsworth on 2018-02-10

I would have given this full 5 stars if the communication durning the booking andreorder stage had gone seamlessly. I was nervouse and unsure that all communication has gone through and been passed on. In the end, however it was a wonderful daay. The barman upstairs was great and the lady (sorry, forgotten her name, I think it starts with M) was lovely and had all the right information, which reassured me. The food was excelllent! The Alma is a great pub and this knocks on to the restaurant. The staff all seemed very friendly and efficient. We hadn’t been there for a few years but excellent all round - so will return. Drinks expensive in Young’s pubs but suppose you have to accept they are premium establishments. Visited The Alma Wandsworth on 2018-02-03

I booked the private room for a surprise 40th birthday dinner for 28 people and pre-ordered a set menu for all 28 guests. The food was presented very poorly and nothing like I would expect in the restaurant downstairs despite being more expensive, the bar staff didn't follow my instructions regarding the drinks to be served despite very detailed emailing beforehand. That said, the night went well and our guests enjoyed it, and the chap on the bar did a great job. Visited The Alma Wandsworth on 2018-01-27

We had a fabulous evening on Friday evening; thank you very much for all your work. The food was first class as was the service. The majority of my dealings with the pub were very easy. I would say one thing; it's quite difficult to organise these evenings and to be told that our booking would be cancelled if we didn't get our numbers in by the time agreed was unnecessary. A gentle reminder would have been enough. Having said that, it is our intention to book again with you for next year (assuming you'll have us!). Visited The Alma Wandsworth on 2018-01-26

They seemed to have forgotten about our reservation and didn’t have room in the dining room so they found a random table beneath a TV screen at the front of the pub. Wasn’t the experience or atmosphere that we wanted or booked for. Food was good though. Visited The Alma Wandsworth on 2018-01-28

We have held our office Christmas Lunch at the Alma over the last 5 years and have always enjoyed the meal, service and ambiance. The food was not great this year, the crab/lobster starter was fairly sloppy, the roast potatoes were not roasted, (they were served anemic looking to the table) and when we asked if we could get some that were actually roasted, we were served deep fried potatoes! We were also served some weird 'massive-leaved' sprouts that were all leaves an no sprout, which were not good. The Christmas pudding was more like a muffin and was 'cakey' in texture. I think that this will be the last year we have our Christmas Lunch here. It is still a great venue but the Christmas lunch offering did not live up to previous years standards. Food was good/fine but the service was slow which made the whole Dining experience frustrating. Service, wine and starters all amazing - but the quinoa salad a huge disappointment. Arrived 5pm so not busy. Bar staff chatting had to call a few times for service. When we went through to the restuarant same barman at door ignored us. Sat down at table orered food my friend was supposed to have quince with her pate but it was strawberry jam with a small half slice of bread. I had the crab again small peice of bread. Ordered our wine the girl brought it over and just put bottle on the table unopened and didnt pour our wine. We had to request a wine cooler!. Our next course was due the girl came over our cutlery and plonked it down sideways going across the table the wrong way. We overhead two men sitting next to us saying how bad the service was. We have eaten many times at the Alma but it seems like they have got complacent as it always so busy. I would no longer recommend it. Very poor Visited The Alma Wandsworth on 2017-12-18

Amazing Venue, food, staff and atmosphere - made for an incredible evening. We booked the private room upstairs for around 50 and enjoyed an incredible 3-course meal over Christmas. The food was delicious and the room was great for what we needed. Finally, the staff were so helpful, friendly and even got involved in singing some carols, which was great to see. Will be booking in again for next year!

Just a quick follow up on our party from last night. The food/venue was good and my guests were happy with the evening – so thank you! However, in terms of staff and service I do think the Alma as a place for functions is well behind similar local venues such as The Ship, Sands End Gastro Pub and the White Horse where we have hosted our Christmas parties in the previous years. Seems like you take in quite inexperienced/temporary staff for these functions and in terms of service and general feel it shows. Lastly, this is the first time we have ever been charged a deposit which does not count towards the food and bar spend. Highly unusual and quite a strange thing to do when your guests are spending £1,800-1,900 on food and drink alone. I have received no receipt for the £100 pounds paid as a deposit and the receipt issued last night for the food and drinks was without VAT. Can I please ask you to send me a full receipt with VAT clearly separated for both deposit (£100) and the food bill which came to £1,884.87. Please take this as constructive criticism – good quality food and venue on the plus side while venue hire/staff arrangement (inexperienced staff, strange handling of deposit and no VAT receipt) and service can be improved. We are local to the Alma and have never had a bad experience however this week we were very disappointed. The service was not good and 2 of our meals were not cooked properly (both fish) - these were sent back to the kitchen but by the time they came back everybody else had finished. We were meant to be celebrating 3 people's birthdays and also our annual christmas get together but it just felt like a regular meal. The waitress was lovely but clearly inexperienced e.g. didn't even ask what sauces those having steak would like, didn't know the answer to any questions etc. I'm sorry to leave a negative review but it really wasn't up to the usual standard. Food amazing though we have to say one male member of staff really needs to up his customer service skills and also Valeria needs to appear to be enjoying her role a bit more-even if she is not as she is representing the ALMA as front of house. We held a Christmas lunch for almost 40 for the third year in a row. The food this year was outstanding. Apparently there is a new chef at the Alma. I hope he stays a long time as he is brilliant. Valeria and her team are fantastic. Nothing was too much trouble. If you are having an event for a large group in Wandsworth this place is definitely worth considering. The food was amazing as always for a get together with friends. The only issue was that the meals didn’t come all at the same time, leaving some of our party waiting, and also the rare steak my boyfriend ordered was medium to well done so we had to send it back, leading to a further wait. The food was very good but this was tempered by the length of time it took to arrive. The waiter was very pleasant but seemed to have difficulty understanding very simple requests like a side order or a tonic water as opposed to a gin and tonic. There were 4 of us at the table, ordered a round of drinks but he only brought 3 of them, then had to ask several times for my friends glass of wine, which only arrived when she had finished her food. The bill had to go back twice before it was correct. Got a bit fed up with it. Visited The Alma Wandsworth on 2017-12-03

The Alma Pub is one of the best patronised pubs in our borough. And the upstairs meeting room is beautifully appointed, with excellent chairs, and a projector and screen for presentations. Wandsworth Living Streets had over 30 supporters there on 28 November. We all bought drinks downstairs and then had an excellent meeting upstairs. A great evening. Thanks. The Alma is genuinely a great venue and the food is top notch (this occasion was no different - Sunday lunch was on point). However, the service on the day just isn't what I've come to expect from the Alma. Whilst our server was polite it felt a bit forced. Not sure if it was a language barrier or new at the job, but usually everyone is friendly and welcoming. Also, whilst I appreciate it is a busy job, dirty finger nails are inexcusable when dealing with the public :-( Visited The Alma Wandsworth on 2017-11-26

Food is always great at the Alma and the service pretty good usually and in fairness it mostly was last night. However, when I ordered my dish I thought it came with mash and root vegetables but when it came it was mashed root vegetables. When I asked the waiter if I could simply have some mash instead he appeared with the menu pointing out what the description was and telling me if I wanted mash I would have to pay. Poor experience that soured the meal a little. I'm sure he was only doing what the chef had told him but theres a reason why the chef's are in the back and front of house deal with the customers. it would have taken little time and expense to ensure a good customer experience. I hesitated before sending this as so negative but we had a pretty awful night at The Alma on Saturday. This was our first time visiting and neither realised or were warned that the crowds for the rugby in the bar next door would be so significant. Once in the restaurant we were placed n a narrow area next to a group of 16 people enjoying a party. Between the noise from the bar and the noise from the table next door it was impossible to hold a conversation which was pretty disappointing for my parents who had travelled an hour to get there and my kids who were looking forward to their company. As bad as the atmosphere was the food was as poor. My daughter ordered a rib-eye steak that we were later charged £36.75 for, and £4 for a pot of congealed sauce. The steak was ordered medium-rare but was served well done and she almost choked at one point. We complained about this but were still charged in full. Anyway, I am sure there are better days to visit and maybe we were unlucky with the food but what was meant to be a nice family meal became a really unpleasant, expensive hour. Love the convenient location and cool atmosphere of The Alma opposite Wandsworth Town station. Food is nice, although a bit pricey, but service is good. I really like this place and it has historically been my 'go to' for a Sunday Roast. Perhaps I went too late in the day but they had ran out of a lot of options. The Alma is one of those cosy, understated & classy "gems" of South West London. Vastly under-rated as a restaurant, it serves up the most delicious food in a polished, Victorian setting. Anything from tenderised game, fresh seafood or Hereford beef is served promptly, presented perfectly, and is worthy of a restaurant in its own right, rather than attached to the bar as it is in this case. Just gorgeous - perfect for family gatherings, friend groups or couples alike. I love eating here. 5 stars. Visited The Alma Wandsworth on 2017-10-31

We went there for roast dinner at 6.30pm and they were out of roast, they serve food until 9.30pm. Rump steak wasn't as good as I would expect from a £20 steak. We ordered tawny port for dessert and they served ruby. Everything just pretty average. Visited The Alma Wandsworth on 2017-10-29

I suppose I only have one gripe/issue - water. Being offered water when you sit down is great but for me tap water is fine to get 'bottled' water and the cost that carries (which is not mentioned on the menu) is a serious gripe of mine. Without instruction to the contrary tap water should be serves - or at least offered. This won't stop me coming back but I do find it annoying. Otherwise excellent. Our second bottle was from the tap and chilled which is all re require! Visited The Alma Wandsworth on 2017-10-22

We had hired the meeting room for the day, as we have for the past few years for an annual away day, but this time the service felt a bit lacking. Tea and coffee wasn't set up for our arrival, and it was very much us asking for things throughout the day, rather than refreshments being replenished. We had to ask for a bin bag, cups and saucers, milk, tea bags, fresh coffee and more hot water. The lady I asked in the main eating area seemed irritated that I had asked her for anything. It's a beautiful hotel and setting, but it would have been nice to have a bit more attention during the day. Visited The Alma Wandsworth on 2017-09-13

Generally we were very pleased with the childrens party we held (this was our second year running for this and it works so well in the big room). Jonathan looked after us so well. There was one thing though we were a bit surprised/confused by - we had asked for their to be tea and coffee available for up to 20 people - in the end only about 3 people had hot drinks as they rather had alcohol or lime cordial - but we were still charged for SEVERAL Americano's so our bill was far bigger than expected. Can anything be done about this as I am not sure it is fair. Otherwise, we were thrilled. Thank you. Visited The Alma Wandsworth on 2017-09-02

This is a lovely neighbourhood restaurant; the sort of place that explains the decline in home entertaining. The menu is interesting, varied and tasty. The wine list is very well chosen and priced. The dining area is attractive, airy well-lit and roomy enough to allow one's own space. The serving team are friendly, helpful and efficient. There is always a good buzz, as local people know a good thing when they find it. Visited The Alma Wandsworth on 2017-08-12

We had a family celebration in the room above the bar. The first thing we loved about our experience was the heavenly air conditioning! Unexpected and very welcome on an extremely hot Summmer's day. The Bramford Room at The Alma was a wonderful setting for my evening of Storytelling - Life death and dreams along the way, a show which was part of the Wandsworth Arts Fringe 2017. Valeria, the events manager was friendly and helpful. The room was set up exactly as we asked. It is a beautiful room. As the evening was raising money for Cancer Research they donated us the room. It was a pleasure to work with them. Hannah Need, Storyteller of Southfields Visited The Alma Wandsworth on 2017-05-11

Overall, it was an unsatisfactory experience for me and one I don't intend to repeat. I'd chosen the Alma, because I live in Trinity Road, I am a big fan of Young's brewery, I have been going to my local, the County Arms, since 1980 and also the Nightingale in Nightingale Lane. I visited the Alma, knowing it to be a Young's venue and felt it would be an appropriate venue, to present my show, A Meeting of Minds, as part of the Wandsworth Arts Festival. To my extreme disappointment, although the staff were nice and friendly, I found them to be totally uninformed about my show and the Wandsworth Festival. I had delivered leaflets and posters, a few weeks before the first performance on the 7th May, only a few leaflets were placed by the door and no posters were put up, despite me visiting the venue a number of times - the only poster that was put up, was put up, by me, in the restaurant, on Friday 5th May, when my wife and I had dinner there - I was told, they couldn't find the posters. The only person who showed some interest in my show was the manager, Valeria Gurinovics - then to crown it all, I was told I couldn't put my event on your Events Board, because it wasn't a Young's event! It was part of the Wandsworth Arts Festival and you were one of the prime venues - what more do you want! I felt, as though, nobody knew was knew what was going on at all - there was 'no connect' between the staff or myself - apart from the assistant managers - none of the staff knew anything about the show - there were no signs directing people up to the show - so when the audience arrived, on both nights, they didn't know where to go, because none of the posters that I had provided were put up. My show was a very quiet, intimate show, about two of our greatest poets, Betjeman and Larkin, demanding a great deal of concentration - in retrospect, had I been made aware that on the first evening, Sunday 7th May, there would be live music in the bar below and on the 14th, a loud football match, I would not have booked the venue - although, there appears to be some sound proofing, it did not block out all of the noise and, obviously, particularly on the 14th, there was a crowded and loud bar of people, which didn't fit with the feel of the show. Obviously, this has the potential to be a good performing venue but probably more suited to a younger audience - maybe, a comedy night, rather than a more serious theatrical piece like mine. I'm sorry that I won't be using the venue again, but I thought it important to give you my feedback. Yours sincerely, Martin Wimbush Visited The Alma Wandsworth on 2017-05-14

Came from south east London over the west London for my girlfriends birthday, and she is 9 months pregnant so potentially our last meal before becoming parents, so wanted to book somewhere nice. I had heard a lot of good things and as being in the top 30 gastro pubs in the U.K. In the 2017 list was expecting good things. The starters were ok, chicken liver parfait was nice but would have expected better presentation and would have been better with brioche. My girlfriend had the mushrooms on sourdough, which was nice but under seasoned and was very bland. I had the pork belly for main which was very nice and more what I expected, however my partner had rolled cod and chorizo... When it arrived it was raw! So we Sent it back and then we were told they would make it again and it would be four minutes.... When the second one came it was raw again!!! We were then told this is how it was supposed it to be... Some parts were cooked but some was like jelly and see through in the middle so was in-edible especially for someone pregnant. So we sent it back again. By this time I had finished mine. We were offered another main but by this time didn't want it and didn't want to wait and my Girlfriend didn't want to eat alone. Also there were some flies in the restaurant around our table. The general service/attentiveness was poor. we had a complementary dessert which was offered as an apology Which is fine, but we left feeling very disappointed with the occasion and the meal. All in all, it was OK, but I was a little disappointed, particularly in the food. I was expecting it to be great after things I'd heard. Having said that, the waiting staff were attentive and quickly got some more crackling when we said that the crackling provided on top of the pork belly wasn't crispy. The restaurant made special arrangements to house a party of 17 (including one guest with mobility problems) which made a birthday lunch a relaxed occasion. However, I did feel that there could have been more attention paid to asking if we needed more wine, bread, condiments etc. Another criticism was that the disabled toilet had a blackboard in front of the door and no space to open without hitting a chair occupied by a diner at the table nearest. A staff member did move the board and the diner moved her seat when she realised the situation. Visited The Alma Wandsworth on 2017-04-15

We were so impressed by the service we received prior to th event and the room was set up beautifully and the food and drink were wonderful. However, our guests arrived at 3:30pm to absolutely no food. We had asked for lots of scones and cream and ham and the lady doing these had apparently been told they were for 4:30pm. It was really stressful chasing the staff for these when trying to host our guests too and really embarrassing that everyone had to wait around for them when some guests needed to leave at 4:30. When they finally arrived they were delicious and we did get a discount from the overall price which was great but sadly this did not make up for the timing error. Thanks, hope this helps. We booked for Sunday lunch and requested a seat in the bar area. When we arrived we were seated in the restaurant but this was not an issue as it was lovely. We had to wait c.5minutes to get menus and order drinks which was surprising as it was not that busy. The girl serving us was lovely and very attentive, esp when I required clarity on gluten free meal and dessert options. She even produced gf bread - albeit loaf slices but still nice to have the option. We ordered the pork belly and chefs roasts and both were delicious! Not alot of potatoes but the meat and veg portions more than made up for that. I ordered the lemon posset for dessert and it was also very enjoyable and a good sized portion. The only recommendation I have is to have some gluten free gravy for the roasts as it's not a proper roast without gravy :) Visited The Alma Wandsworth on 2017-03-26

As a previous long time employer of Young's, i was disappointed in the service at the bar we ordered a black coffee 3 times, and waited 15 mins for it to turn up ! We was incorrectly told that our table was ready 4 times ! We than had to ask twice when it would be ready, 15 mins after table booking time, finally getting table 35 mins after booking time ! 2 people ordered Steak which was tough and Uneatable !!! this was exchange for roast beef, which was not that good also. When i received the Bill it did not include our Bar tab which was set up with our table number, Total bar bill was £70.00, but being a 'Young's man' with staff discount i told the staff, and it was corrected and paid in full. I feel that many people not happy with the service would not have pointed this mistake out. I can only suggest that the complete management of The Alma is rectified as quick as possible, so we do not lose to many customers. Visited The Alma Wandsworth on 2017-03-12

I wrote a wonderful review for The Alma a few months ago but unfortunately on a visit a few weeks ago I cannot do the same.
