Description
The Knave of Clubs has thrown open its doors once more, breathing life back into one of Shoreditch’s most storied Victorian pubs. First established in 1880 and shuttered for three decades, it has now been lovingly restored by a powerhouse team: James Dye of the Camberwell Arms, hospitality veteran Benjy Leibowitz, and acclaimed chef Patrick Powell, formerly of Allegra and the Chiltern Firehouse.
Their revival champions classic East End charm with a modern polish – think deep-green ceilings, vintage signage, handsome wood panelling and the gentle hum of locals drifting in for a pint after work. It’s a proper pub at heart, but with just enough finesse to make it feel like a bit of an occasion.
On the ground floor, the menu leans into comforting pub favourites elevated by Powell’s culinary precision: venison sausage rolls, prawn scotch eggs, crisp fried chicken and rotisserie bird marinated in chermoula, served with outrageously crunchy chicken‑fat roasties. Sundays bring hefty roasts, while the bar keeps things lively with Guinness, Allsopp’s Double Diamond, a nod to the building’s brewery heritage, and short, well‑chosen wines and cocktails. Upstairs, One Club Row offers a more refined New York‑inspired dining experience, complete with private dining rooms and a menu that shifts towards bistro‑style indulgence.
