Description

For Richmond's best views over the Thames, venture down to riverside pub, The White Cross. In the summer, chill with a glass of wine on their sunny terrace overlooking the river and soak in the French Riviera vibes. In winter, guests gravitate towards their fireplace which is one of the few working fireplaces under a window in the country.

Inside, The White Cross sticks to the tried and tested pub formula of dark, wood interiors and comfy banquettes. However, there's some hidden nooks and crannies in the classic bar and you can always add some excitement to your visit by heading down at high tide. The staff leave wellies at the waters edge so you can still go in for a tipple. They've even been know to give punters a fireman's lift in as well!

Food wise, the venue serves up classic pub grub, such as doorstop sandwiches, pies and meze boards. Being a Young's pubs, you can also bet that there's a great choice of drinks including a selection of ales from the Young's range, seasonal guest ales and an extensive wine menu.

Thanks very much for reserving the space for us. It was a lovely pub and a good place to meet. It was pretty noisy in the upstairs room, which made it tricky at times but that's not your fault! Thanks! Jane visited The White Cross on 09 Nov 2017

The staff were fabulous and couldn’t do enough to help but the Sunday roast lunch was very school dinners! V tough Yorkshire pudding, soggy roast potatoes, overdone beef and all luke warm - didn’t risk ordering dessert. visited The White Cross on 29 Oct 2017

As always this is a very good day. My only concern this year was the food which, unfortunately, was a tad on the cool side. The sausage and eggs were hot but the bacon, hash-brown, mushroom and beans varied in temperature. I didn't say anything at the time because it was very tasty anyway and didn't detract from my enjoyment of the event. visited The White Cross on 27 Oct 2017

My chicken wings and fishcake were delicious and the rest of my family were pleased with their burgers. Beautiful location although being stuck right at back of upstairs dining room, think we would just stay downstairs in bar area next time, as view is main selling point. Just one disappointment: my husband's Prosecco was virtually flat. I know you keep wine overnight and can't throw away every open bottle, but if your seals can't keep fizzy wine fizzy overnight, you should either buy little bottles, throw away leftover fizzy wine each night or not sell fizzy wine by the glass at all (ie. bottles only). Marred an otherwise good experience. visited The White Cross on 24 Sep 2017

Visited the White Cross with 3 others in the month of July to sample their Sunday Roast. Meant to write this review back then, but somehow could not make the time. The food at the White Cross was lovely and the portions rather generous. The White Cross has a lovely ambience and was buzzing with people that Sunday. Service was decent too. The one thing that ticked me off though is the experience we had towards the end of our meal. It was a rather gloomy, drizzly Sunday (even though it was July!), slightly windy with temperatures around 16-18 degress Celsius. As you can imagine, in situations like this, you might like to be warm inside a restaurant and enjoy your meal. What you would not expect is for the restaurant to open its lovely French windows on the upper floor. We noticed that the window kept being opened by the staff and then kept being shut by customers who were seated on the upper floor. It's not nice to reserve tables inside and have your food go cold/feel cold yourself/eat with your trench coats on! I noticed this and feeling a little cold myself, I went over to the staff and requested that the windows be closed. I was told that the ground floor was busier with people and had gotten quite stuffy and even warm and people downstairs were complaining. So, they had to open the windows on the top floor to circulate the air a bit and make it cooler. To accommodate the needs of the customers on the ground floor at the expense of the comfort of the customers on the top floor hardly seems sensible to me! Thankfully for us, our meal was almost finished and we did not need to sit there miserably any longer. Needless to stay, we spent no time on ordering any dessert there, but paid our bill and left. What was a great dining experience up until then was completely ruined by the lack of customer service towards the end. visited The White Cross on 23 Jul 2017

Very enjoyable. The staff were very agreeable and our decision to move from upstairs room to upstairs balcony was no problem. Two tiny comments. I was not comfortable with my credit card being held downstairs in order for me to keep a tab. Normally it is swiped and given back. Secondly, the Sunday Roast was very enjoyable but came rather luke warm/almost cold and the pork was not 'crackled'. These are constructive comments, everything else was very good, ie service, value for money, views, staff, etc. Well done. Will be coming back. visited The White Cross on 06 Aug 2017

The food was good but we had an issue with the waitress not knowing what burgers she had to serve so our guests ended up with the wrong meal. She also failed to take the order correctly initially so one of our guests didn't even have a meal and had to wait for his to be cooked while everyone else was eating ! I tried to ask her to resolve the burger issue and asked how she didn't know what she was serving and asked me to check with our guests which ones had cheese etc and was very aggressive in her tone, which was uncalled for and unprofessional. I would assume that the waitresses are trained to know what the food on the menu looks like and be told what she is picking up from the kitchen to serve. We have not visited The White Cross before for a client meal, there were 11 of us, and it has not left us with a good experience. I must re-iterate though that the food was good and everyone enjoyed it. visited The White Cross on 23 May 2017

We had booked a table the previous day, but turned up when it was sunny, so the pub was probably busier than they anticipated. We had to wait an extremely long time (1hr plus) for food having been warned about a half hour wait (which would have been fine). The food was good when it arrived, and we were offered complimentary coffees and desserts to make up for the delays, none of which we could stay for because of the time we had already waited. Possibly not representative of them, but we probably won't be back to find out. :-( visited The White Cross on 17 Feb 2017

Nice atmosphere and friendly staff but weird food options on the day. Asked for the fish and chips but was told we only have the very boney option... Then asked for the steak to be told they were frozen... Then went for the liver. After waiting 1 hour for food when arrived they said bacon was being cooked separately? This arrived in a separate bowl 5 minutes later. Pie looked good. visited The White Cross on 30 Dec 2016

Definitely one of my favourite pubs in Richmond. Beautiful views over the river.. have gone back their quite a few times over the past weeks with all the hot weather.. try to get their early if you want a seat with a good view though. Haven't been there at high tide but it's definitely on my to-do list!
