Description

The Boathouse in Putney is a lovely Young's & Co. owned London riverside pub, consisting of a pub and patio on the ground floor and a restaurant with a  balcony overlooking the river serving British cuisine upstairs.

The Boathouse has a nice balance between a traditional pub and bar style. While there's a really modern feel, The Boathouse is unarguably a classic easy-going and fun pub. You can spend hours admiring the views of the Thames River, whether it's on the balcony eating fine British classics and a bottle of wine watching the sunset with a date or on the ground floor outside area with your mates eating Fish & Chips and drinking beer.

The Boathouse is designed for relaxation, laughter, good food, drinks, and great views.

Unfortunately a calamitous evening for my wife's 60th birthday celebration. After waiting 45 minutes for 2 starters they arrived with the main courses for all 6 guests. What was worse, everything was cold! Applause and credit has to go to the evening supervisor who cancelled the tab including drinks. The evening was only saved by us going to another Youngs pub with exactly the same menu which was served quickly and hot! What a shame as the Boathouse is a lovely pub in a wonderful position. visited The Boathouse on 02 Jun 2017

At first, I was most disappointed to find the vegetarian roast dinner option not available, having selected this venue because of the Sunday Roast vegetarian menu option. I had spent best part of an afternoon on line finally selecting the Boathouse having checked all menus of restaurant pubs along the river to ensure there was a veggie roast available. There were other vegetarian options but none with the Sunday roast...... As I have various dietary issues, I try to ensure the venues I select are suitable to meet my dietary needs and thought I'd not have a problem following my dogged research. Wrong....... Note to self - - before booking a table, telephone each venue to check the on line menu options will be the one available on day of visit. However, the staff were very supportive and did their best to explain why another vegetarian option couldn't be adjusted to meet my dietary needs(due to the fact the option is pre prepped and not put together immediately prior to it being finally roasted. However, I put my disappointment to one side and did next best thing and I managed to select a couple of starters and 2 vegetable dishes and managed to have a very enjoyable well cooked meal. The food was enjoyed by my friend as well, we both agreed it was excellently cooked and presented. More cheese on the onion tart would have made the tart superb. Venue is clean and offers window and balcony views of the river...... The staff were terrific, friendly, chatty and fun. The coffee Martini cocktails were grand and the young lady that put them together explained the process and ingredients used. The puddings were scrumptious. Like most places these days it's a bit over priced but I knew prices before we went. visited The Boathouse on 14 May 2017

Hi Guys, for the last three months in a row when we arrived we could not see a table reserved for us. We are from Putney Pure gym and we have always reserved a table on the last Friday of every month for our members evening. Its ok as we have always enjoyed the evening and we end up spreading around anyway but it would be good to have a table where we can tell members where to meet us. visited The Boathouse on 28 Apr 2017

A disappointing trip to the Boathouse on Saturday. Waited 45min-hour for food. Someone did come and let us know after about 45mins and apologised. We told a waiter we were a lot more hungry now and asked if we could add some chips to the order but were told the kitchen was closed as it was so busy. We were one of 2 tables upstairs (zero atmosphere), it didn't seem half full downstairs! I'm afraid we were a bit short and said we'd been waiting a long time, surely they could be accommodating?! He awkwardly shuffled off. When the food came it was OK, pulled pork baguette pretty stale and dry. Avocado on toast nice but no chilli as advertised. No chips, no follow up. Few staff so no real customer service. Disappointing as we're rarely in that area and there were lots of other places we could have gone to. We were surpised it wasn't busy on a sunny Saturday afternoon - less so now I'm afraid! visited The Boathouse on 22 Apr 2017

We had a lovely afternoon because of the company, but the availability and quality of the food was appalling. We booked for a lunch for 8 people... there was no table service to be seen when it was time to order and when we went to the bar we were told that they were too busy to serve food! The pub area wasn't even busy - we were one of two tables on the mezzanine area. And they shouldn't accept bookings for lunch if they can't deliver. We eventually convinced the bar staff to serve us food, but the food was very disappointing and the way it was served was careless and sloppy. Great place for drinks, but don't think we'll be eating there again. visited The Boathouse on 22 Apr 2017

Food was ok - but really only just ok. Service however left a lot to be desired - well meaning but very very slow, had to ask multiple times for cutlery, napkins and ketchup, drinks which got forgotten about, and the virgin cocktail that was ordered turned up eventually only to not be virgin at all - except when we checked with the waiter his inital response was a very doubtful sounding 'er...it should be, yes...' cue us asking them to check, which it turned out it wasn't at all. And after all that it still appeared on the bill with the vodka included. Not the first time I've had dubious service here, which is a real shame as it's a nice location and could be so much better. visited The Boathouse on 08 Apr 2017

Service Staff just too slow. Our Waiter was nice enough but didn't really seem to understand `sense of urgency' service on a busy day. We had to go to the bar and remind staff what we'd ordered and it took 30 minutes until someone served us after we arrived. Awesome location - but service staff need to be better trained when the restaurant is busy. visited The Boathouse on 02 Apr 2017

I went to The Riverview restaurant with my boyfriend for his birthday. The man (can't remember his name) was so friendly and polite on the phone when I booked and the same again when we arrived for our meal. I asked him if they could do something special with the dessert due to it being a birthday which he kindly agreed and said he'd put candles on it. A different girl served us though (a young black girl) and she seemed a bit new to the job. When taking our order she strangely asked if we wanted all of our courses together, to which we said no, we'll have them separately. Then she said, "ok, so you want a break between each course". We said "we'll just have them normally please, one after the other". We thought this was a bit strange but didn't go on about it. Each course then was quite slow to come out. We had a carrot and orange soup starter which was lovely. Then after about a 20 minute wait our steaks arrived - without steak knives, but it was no biggie. My steak was nice but my boyfriend said his was very fatty. Nearly 25 minutes went by before we managed to get our desserts which I know wasn't because of the candles as the nice man had earlier said that they had found some. All in all it was just a bit slow and the dessert (lemon cheesecake - seemed more like sponge than cheesecake) and steak quality wasn't the best. A nice casual place, but I wouldn't choose it for a special occasion. While all staff were friendly and I am certainly grateful that they put candles in the dessert for me, I just found the service to be a little slow and disorganised. visited The Boathouse on 25 Mar 2017

My wife and I, a retired couple, had a very pleasant evening at the Boathouse. Originally we had booked into the bar restaurant but we were the only customers so that the area lacked atmosphere. Also, it was rather cool in the bar restaurant. I therefore had a look at the Riverview restaurant which looked more attractive and had a good view of the Thames, had customers and was warm. We were pleased to be able to order from the bar menu. At the time of writing prices for food in the Riverview restaurant were not available online. The food was good but took a little time to arrive. The service was very pleasant and all staff, both in the bar and restaurant, were exceptional. I have now arranged for a group of seven of us to eat there in the coming week. visited The Boathouse on 14 Mar 2017

We had a lovely day, especially with the service from the Irish lady when we booked. We stayed the whole day, but were very disappointed with the end of the day. When we received our bill, it had several drinks on it that we didn't order. Our waitress was great at sorting it out, but when we noticed an extra drink and queried it (differnet types of wine and in different sizes) the male manager came over and was pretty aggressive about it all, implying that because we had been at the pub all day we probably couldn't remember what we had ordered. If we were drunk, then he shouldn't have been serving us, and he really shouldn't have offered us the free drink that his staff recommended he do if he had identified us as intoxicated. Was pretty angry about it all to be honest, especially as it is illegal to give drunk people more alcohol. I cycle past the Boathouse a lot and pop in for a tea and a juice, or come along with pals during the 6 nations etc. It isn't a huge amount of business from me, but after his attitude I probably won't come back if he is working. The pub gets 3 stars as the rest of the staff were great and it is a lovely place. jsm visited The Boathouse on 25 Feb 2017

Slow service (despite being empty) half way through eating our starter the waitress asked if we wanted our main which makes me think it was probably sitting in the kitchen for a while. food was okay pub grub. Some little things such as bringing the wine to our table unopened and not pouring it for us (something you probably expect in most restaurants) The light above our table was flickering which was annoying and we were sat by the door where people were leaving to smoke through our meal..we did move and ultimately not really their fault but did effect our evening as I was taking my parents out for dinner. visited The Boathouse on 25 Nov 2016

I had booked a table 2 weeks in advance but none of the bar staff had any idea where the table was or if it had been reserved at all. We had to pull to tables together ourselves and search for spare seats. On arrival the bar was packed with only one person working - clearly new and took ages to get the drinks as didn't know what we were asking for or where it was - had to point it out to her. Most of us had payslips which allowed us to have discount - on our last purchase the bar tender said - "last time as cant give discount to everyone" - If i want to use my discount and i am buying multiple drinks i don't see what the problem is. It was boiling hot upstairs and when we asked if anything could be done about it - it seemed nothing was. The bar man told us it was going to be an half-hour wait but it was actually more like a full hour, The food came out in dribs and drabs - and even though we had asked for 2 pulled pork burgers, we were given normal burgers and only told that they had run out then - more than an hour after ordering. We were offered a refund - but considering how long we waited for it we just took it. Disappointing all around - was supposed to spend the whole night at the boat house but we moved on swiftly after finishing our food. visited The Boathouse on 12 Nov 2016

To begin with, we are very sorry for your experience. Unfortunately, there are times when the whole series of events turns against us and sadly it affects our patrons experience in a negative way. We are always doing our best to learn from our mistakes. We hope you are going to come to us and that next time your experience will be much more pleasant. Best Regards, The Boathouse

The boathouse have proven themselves to be the most customer caring pub/restaurant ever! Following a miscommunication and haphazard birthday booking at the end of October the Boathouse made every effort and then some to make up for a less than great night, that I hasten to add was a mistake that could have occurred anywhere. Being vegan can cause a few issues when dining out, requirements can be overlooked or the communication can be lost, but The Boathouse went above and beyond to give me a very enjoyable night to make up for a slight birthday blunder!. I was offered a main meal and a bottle of bubbles for two. Upon arriving to the Boathouse I was surprised and delighted to find out that the chef had created a bespoke vegan pie just for me and my friend, and it was delightful. Tasty, and huge and cooked to perfection with plenty of flavour and warm spices. I will press for it to be on the menu as a dish too!, as well as this they have promised that a vegan roast will be added to the Sunday roasts as permanent fixture. Special thanks to Sean the manager and to Jamie who looked after myself and my friend on the night, I have never experienced a company that genuinely made a real effort to make up for a mistake, they literally went beyond anything I could have expected. I've lived in London for 12 years and this was the worst restaurant meal that I have had in that time. The service was appalling - a 40 min wait for our food and various excuses made about how busy they were (the restaurant was half empty). When the food eventually arrived it was over-cooked and tasted dreadful. Avoid it! Becky visited The Boathouse on 25 Sep 2016
