Description

Situated in the former law courts of the Bank of England, this is a beautiful place serving beautiful food and drink. Boasting a stunning interior steeped in history, The Old Bank of England can be found on Fleet Street, close to Temple station.

Hand-crafted pies are the speciality here. Each option is lovingly prepared using melt-in-the-mouth shortcrust pastry and the highest quality of filling, and accompanied to the table by mash and gravy. There’s also a range of other British classics like beer battered fish & chips and Hampshire sourced steak burgers. Mouth watering yet? Ours too. Again.

The venue also offers a strong range of wines, whiskeys and a selection of Fuller’s award-winning ales to pick between. Everything can be enjoyed on the opulent ground floor, in their wonderful courtyard or upstairs in the viewing gallery.

Offering a high standard in food, drink and ambience, dining at The Old Bank of England is dining at the height of sophistication.

Good spot in the city with reasonable prices. But they had run out of almost every pie by the time of our table booking (8pm) which wasn't ideal! If possible, ask for a table upstairs as it's much nicer than sitting in the slightly dingy room next to the main pub area. visited The Old Bank Of England on 17 Feb 2017

Good Experience. I reserved a drinks area for 15..although it was a nice, cozy little booth, but a bit small for 15..nevertheless Loved the venue..it has a backyard too..will be great during summer! Will def be back:) Sameer visited The Old Bank Of England on 17 Feb 2017

We love the Old Bank of England and want to return next year, but if possible would prefer to be seated in the big open dining room rather than in the back room. I realize that for some groups of 25 it is better to have the privacy, but my students and I enjoy the atmosphere of the larger dining room. visited The Old Bank Of England on 14 Feb 2017

The food was good and the bar staff/serving staff were friendly. However, the food was extremely slow. One of our group (of 4) was served about 20 minutes before everyone else, even though she ordered last. We saw another customer return a plate of food b/c the chips had arrived cold - for the second time! visited The Old Bank Of England on 06 Feb 2017

Bar was very under-staffed so wait time for drinks was an embarrassing experience with all other customers shaking their heads in disbelief. The two ladies worked as fast as was humanely possible but at least an extra person, probably 2 at peak times would have made things something like bearable. It became a joke of the night and we played a game where the loser had the forfeit of standing at the bar like a muppet for 20 minutes to get the next round in! visited The Old Bank Of England on 31 Jan 2017

Great food, great beer. Standard menu wasn't at our table and we only realized our other options once we ordered dessert! We received friendly, accommodative and fast service. The bottle of Riesling on the menu was not available, but an alternate one was offered. The starter salmon seemed "off" and aged. The main Turkey was delicious and the gravy and pie were as well. The black cab pudding was satisfying. When coffee was ordered, we were told that there was only decaf available. To "make up" for it, we received a complimentary Bailies. The Hennessy came in a regular tumbler glass when a snifter would have been appropriate. visited The Old Bank Of England on 24 Dec 2016

Very disappointing. I had brought my work team along for a Christmas lunch at 1:30pm based on the usual menu: pies (the 'signature dish' of the place) almost run out... no ham hock, or other mainstream dishes. Most of the deserts also gone. Certainly nothing nice left. No diet Coke, no Gales HSB. Fullers ESB very good but overall very disappointed and none of the 9 people I brought along would go back. Had we walked in off the street I could have understood it but I booked a month earlier! Come on Fullers prove you're better than this. visited The Old Bank Of England on 21 Dec 2016

Awful service, took over 40 minutes just for the starter to arrive even though we had pre ordered. I completely understand with it being Christmas that it was going to be busy but why on earth would you take pre orders and still take 40 minutes to bring our a soup. We ended up having to take the desserts in a box and when we went to pay, the waiter walked away with my card with no explanation (I assume it was to get another card machine). Wouldn't recommend. visited The Old Bank Of England on 19 Dec 2016

I was most grateful that, quite late on, your staff went out of their way to fit in a late lunchtime booking for 3. When we arrived we were most impressed by the prompt service, starting with drinks, but then speedy ordering of food selections. We enjoyed all the food ordered and much appreciated the good service that went with it before, during and after the meal. The ladies concerned were very helpful and efficient. We left reminding ourselves to book at The Old Bank of England during the coming year, but also to book earlier for the pre-Chistmas period in 201.7. What a mixed time we had at this great old Pub. The decor and atmosphere are wonderful but as a Beer 'n Pie pub we were rather surprised that there were no steak pies available for lunch - yes, lunch. You might understand that the pub could run out by dinner of some things but to have what must be the most popular dish on the menu run out on a Saturday is sacrilege!! The backup salad wasnt available either. To be fair, the manager gave us a free bottle of wine to make up but the company must look to its laurels over the food organising. We had all travelled to London for birthday pub lunch and to say we were disappointed was an understatement. Must try harder!!!!! visited The Old Bank Of England on 10 Dec 2016

It was the least successful First Tuesday we've ever had, primarily because our usual room was allocated to another party -- and we were crammed into the tiny room next door. We should have been warned in advance, and we could have made other arrangements. There were far too many of us, and so little space to eat lunch in that many of our party didn't bother. I did ask for you at the bar -- and was assured that you were no longer the manager and that the temporary manager didn't know how to contact me. Why wasn't it mentioned to me last month? Presumable because the booking hadn't been made then! The staff did their best to cope with the situation and the meal I had was excellent. Normally I am the last one to leave -- and more than a few times have paid for any meal unpaid for by others who had forgotten to pay. Yesterday, I was among the first to leave. Wonderful night spot in the midst of the ever bustling London city. We booked a table last Friday, and had no problem being ushered to our table by our friendly host John. He has been amazing! A really enjoyable night. Will definitely visit again!

Excellent venue for business lunch. Second time I have used it for a press meeting. Nice room, liked by guests, great service, food and beer. Simple to book and great location. proactivepr visited The Old Bank Of England on 26 May 2016

Well done! The booked table for two professionals was a nice one (a bit small, though). We enjoyed the food, served by a very friendly and professionally acting waiter. We are happy to book a table soon again. frank_nabla visited The Old Bank Of England on 25 May 2016

We had an absolutely brilliant private event for my dad's 50th birthday at The Old Bank of England. Jas, the manager, and his staff were so helpful and accommodating. Lovely atmosphere, and all the guests kept commenting on what a brilliant space it was. Highly recommended. ehardy visited The Old Bank Of England on 06 Feb 2016

The Old Bank of England nearly ruined my engagement party! I made a booking through Fuller's head office about a month ago, for a space for 40 at the Old Bank of England. I received a confirmation stating I could have the area from 7pm to midnight. The night before my party, at 9.30pm, I received an email from the manager stating they were going to be closing before 9pm on the night of my booking. I didn't see the email until after midnight, by which time I couldn't call them. I emailed back to say it was extremely inconvenient, and would ruin my special night! I had a sleepless night, thinking that my engagement party was ruined. Thankfully, the next morning I rang around and found a Nicholson's pub that was able to accommodate my party at short notice. About an hour after I made this booking, a Fuller's representative contacted me to say that I could have the Old Bank of England until midnight - but with no apology for the stress they had caused me, I went ahead with the Nicholson's pub and thankfully had a great night, but with no thanks to Fuller's! I have made a formal complaint to Fuller's yesterday and hope they're going to give me a proper apology! I advise you steer clear of this pub for any special occasions. hgullen visited The Old Bank Of England on 24 Oct 2015

Nice food (especially the pie and mash), but it is difficult to book a table. It's a great place to meet for drinks after work - very nice venue that's retained a great deal of charm. If you don't have a booking then it can be very difficult to get a seat and you'll be standing around for a while!

Very nice food and absolutely pretty pub in the Old bank. The service was very good, and very friendly waitress. It was hard to book a table, it was impossible to book a table via internet, no answer via the phone but I booked by email and it worked.

Great evening as always: polite and attentive stuff, great selection of beers and excellent kitchen. They've just refurbished the garden at the back, so it's particularly nice to be there in summer.

I decided to call the pub directly to ensure our booking would be handled properly. We were a group of up to 15 people attending the pub at 5pm on Friday for a colleague's leaving drinks. The pub has a newly refurbished garden area so we opted to book an area outside - the lady on the phone assured me this was no problem and that my booking had been confirmed. I received numerous booking confirmations and reminders over email (I left my address with her for this purpose), however unfortunately upon arrival they had "no recollection" of this request and had instead assigned us two booths inside the building facing away from each other instead. There wasn't much by way of apology, and I was greeted with slight annoyance by the manager on duty when I asked whether there was anything they could do to move us to a more open area inside the building, bearing in mind we had been quite accepting of the fact they had refused to put us outside - regardless of the commitment they had made over phone and email. All in all, I very much like the aesthetics of The Old Bank of England pub, however I think there is much to be said for the customer service demonstrated by their staff.

We booked online for 6 o'clock on a Friday night. Good job we did as the place was packed. I understand what a previous reviewer meant by it being noisy but we felt it just added to the fantastic ambience of the pub. We were given a table in a side room which was nice but I actually would of preferred to be in the main bar. We all loved everything about the Bank of England. We all had a variety of pies and they were all voted as fabulous. I'm not a beer drinker but the rest of my party couldn't praise the ESB beer enough, in fact every other beer all weekend was compared and didn't come close! The staff were all very helpful and attentive. Basically everything was fantastic and my only complaint would be it's not open at weekends so when we visit London we can't always visit. It's a beautiful, historic pub with fab beer and yummy pies. A gem in london. Well done.

Booking for 4. Used the booking system which confirmed the booking by email but the pub had no record of it when we arrived. We had come for pie, and arrived to be told that all but 3 of the pies on the menu had sold out. I'd say that's pretty poor for 7pm on a Friday night. The mutton, black pudding and plum pie with ginger and cinnamon was absolutely delicious though, perfect chips and shredded cabbage, nice gravy. Stick toffee pudding tasted nice but texture was all wrong - more like a drier sponge, only saved by the delicious sauce. However, although the surroundings are really impressive, the cavernous nature of the place renders it painfully loud, and having music to compete with made that, in my opinion, far worse. Really hard to have a conversation or hear yourself think. Didn't need the music. Will try again on a quieter time. My advice would be to get a table in one of the side rooms as the main area is just too noisy.

We had a birthday drink for one of our colleagues. Place was not too busy or too loud on Friday and everyone had a good time. We didn't try any food this time but we would like to try some next time.

I booked a table for 5 and we all ordered the steak and ale pie only to be told that there was only one left. This was very disappointing in view of the fact that you advertise how good your pies are. I hope to try the pie on our next visit. Do you run out of these often?

We had our work Christmas Do here and the food was delicious, the service was impeccable despite a busy pub evening; they made sure our room was equipped with all the necessary goods and topped up the water at a swift pace and offered drinks table service! Would definitely come back as the atmosphere of the pub itself is fantastic and a good time was had by all!

The food and service was very good on a very busy Friday night before Christmas. Would definitely return again and recommend it to friends and family. A very enjoyable meal.

The pub and service should get a top score but not the booking system. head office did not tell the pub, luckily I checked with them and they squeezed us in later. I emailed head office and complained, they ignored the email and sent a reminder of the first booking. At the pub it was perfect service and food. Shame head office cant support their front line staff or perform as well. I will only ever deal with the pub direct in future Ian Poyton.

We had a drinks reception, with a few nibbles, on 10 November. Most in attendance had never been to the "Old Bank." All were very impressed and will return, probably with other large groups!

What a great pub. We had dinner here-the pies are amazing, even the vegetarian one. Great atmosphere. Just don't expect a table service, food has to be ordered from the bar.

Arrived to find it heaving full, no sign of our (or any)reserved tables (apart from private party closing off the upstairs gallery), no one even appeared to be serving food, so we had a drink and went elsewhere.

I've always loved this pub which is in a fantastic building in a great location on Fleet St and opposite Temple, with great food at good prices and an equally good selection of drinks, including very well kept beers. On Friday we booked one of their private spaces (the Dining Room) for the start of a weekend of celebrations for my wife's 50th birthday party. The manager couldn't have been more accomodating or easier to deal with, the service on the night was excellent (especially considering that we weren't paying a fee for the room, just a reasonable minimum spend) with a member of staff dedicated to dealing with our group, and all the above - food and drinks - was just as I had expected, and pleased everyone. They got the difficult balance of giving us enough space to do our own thing without seeming to have forgotten about us just right, and at the end of the night what could have been a difficult situation with settling up the various bills separately was dealt with efficiently and sensitively. I will definitely be back soon and would not hesitate to recommend the Old Bank of England to anyone looking for a venue around the area. They even coped with another member of our group deciding at the last minute that she wanted to get a cake, balloons and various decorations delivered. Top work. And if anyone from the pub reads these reviews, thanks again to Mark (the manager) and especially Bridget, who is an absolute star.

You can bank on the fact that this is one of London's top pubs (sorry). I went there a few years ago and it still sticks in the mind, a grand affair to every last detail and well worth a visit.
