Tate Britain

Description

Tate Britain is the riverside home of British art, set behind a neoclassical portico on Millbank and flowing through grand spaces like the Rotunda and the Duveen sculpture galleries. Founded in 1897 as the National Gallery of British Art (later the Tate Gallery), it was re‑christened Tate Britain in 2000 when the collection split with the opening of Tate Modern. It's the world’s largest holding of J. M. W. Turner, contains benchmark Pre‑Raphaelite rooms, explores Blake and Constable in depth, and boasts the Clore Gallery (1987) dedicated to the Turner Bequest. Plus, the whole collection was dramatically re-hung in 2023 to present 500 years of art with a wider, more contemporary lens.

Across its history, the museum has weathered wartime bomb damage, commissioned the Duveen Galleries (opened 1930s) to champion sculpture, and became closely associated with the Turner Prize (launched 1984), whose exhibitions and announcements frequently punctuated the gallery’s calendar. Big moments have ranged from blockbuster surveys of Turner, Hockney and the Pre‑Raphaelites to era‑defining contemporary shows that reframed the story of British art for new audiences.

Entry to the main collection is free but major temporary exhibitions are ticketed. There’s step‑free access, a cloakroom, café and shop; photography is allowed in most collection spaces but may be restricted in some exhibitions. Families can pick up trails and activity guides, and art‑school diehards can ride the river boat between Tate Britain and Tate Modern for a scenic hop along the Thames.
