Shakespeare's Globe

Description

Situated on London’s South Bank, overlooking the River Thames, Shakespeare’s Globe is one of the city’s most celebrated cultural landmarks and one of the world’s most famous theatres. Opened in 1997, the venue is a meticulously researched reconstruction of the original Globe Theatre, where many of William Shakespeare’s plays were first performed in the late 16th and early 17th centuries.

The Globe Theatre is an atmospheric open-air, 360-degree auditorium, designed to replicate the historic Elizabethan playhouse Shakespeare described as a 'wooden O'. With its iconic timber frame, thatched roof, and thrust stage surrounded by three levels of galleries, the venue creates an intimate and immersive experience where audiences and performers share the same space.

With a capacity of approximately 1,400 people, including both seated gallery accommodation and the traditional standing area for 'Groundlings', Shakespeare’s Globe welcomes thousands of visitors each year to experience world-class productions in a setting inspired by Shakespeare’s original theatre.
