The Social

Description

In 1999 The Social opened in Little Portland Street. The brainchild of a record company whose offshoots included a hugely successful underground club night, The Social was set up with a simple manifesto – to provide great music and better booze to anyone who fancied tripping through the doors.

Home to London nightlife institutions for the last decade with regular events from Faber and Faber, Trojan Records and Heavenly plus intimate performances from the likes of Adele, Aphex Twin, Hot Chip, Beck, Fat White Family, Vampire Weekend, Caitlin Moran, The Chemical Brothers, Ragga Twins, Jock Scot, Jessie J, MGMT, Irvin Welsh, Jack White, Night Beats, Frank Black, Edan, Laura Marling, The Charlatans, Tim Westwood, Temples, Fat Boy Slim, Wolf Alice, Jon Savage, Justin Robertson, Florence and the Machine, Jeremy Deller, Kate Tempest, Bon Iver, Horace Andy, Saint Etienne, Alt J, DBC Pierre, The Parrots, Edna O’Brien, Lily Allen, Super Furry Animals, Klaxons, Edwyn Collins, Avalanches, Young Fathers, Andrew Weatherall, Jane Weaver, Michael Kiwanuka, VIP Party Boys, Steve Davis, Stealing Sheep, Kevin Rowland, DJ Yoda and many, many more

Nearly 20 years later and still run by the original team who created it – Heavenly Recordings & The Breakfast Group – the bar is an award winning London landmark. Designed by a partnership of David Adjaye and Will Russell (now of Pentagram) with a brief of withstanding nuclear attack or – at the very least – the worst that people could chuck at it.

The Social has launched well over a million hugely successful hangovers.

  • A word from the chef:

Since launching his Burgerac’s Burgershack kitchen residency at The Royal Oak pub in Marylebone in July 2014, London’s pre-eminent blogger and “burger detective” has drawn praise for his delicious comfort food from the likes of The Evening Standard, Cool Hunting (US), RES (Sweden), We The Food Snobs, The Londoner, and the venture even appeared listed alongside such cultural landmarks as The Tate Modern, The Riverside Café and The Groucho Club in a piece on MatchesFashion.com focusing on London Hotspots. Heck, The Times’ food writer, Giles Coren, recently professed his love of Burgershack’s Hubba Hubba burger on Twitter.

No, it is due to my sheer laziness which is compounded by the thought of getting on the tube, and Mayfair, with its…
