The 100 Club

Description

A legend beneath Oxford Street, The 100 Club is a low‑ceilinged basement with ruby‑red walls, pillar‑lined sightlines and a stage that feels almost within arm’s reach. Memorabilia and old gig posters blanket the room, the bar runs the length of the back wall, and the acoustics are all about immediacy - loud, live and unfiltered. It’s rough‑edged in the best way: a place where the floor tells stories and the lights stay close to the crowd.

rading under the same name since 1964 (and hosting live music on the site since 1942), it’s widely regarded as London’s oldest independent venue, cherished for the way it puts world‑class artists in front of just a few hundred fans. It’s also a cornerstone of subcultures: the birthplace of the 100 Club Punk Special in 1976, and home to the first Northern Soul all‑nighter in the early ’80s.

The roll‑call of past performers reads like a timeline of modern music: from wartime and post‑war jazz (Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman in the building, Ronnie Scott and Johnny Dankworth on the stage) to blues greats (Muddy Waters, B.B. King), through the seismic two‑day punk festival that launched the Sex Pistols, The Clash, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Buzzcocks and The Damned. In the decades since, it’s hosted secret or small‑room shows from The Rolling Stones, Blur, Paul Weller, Alice Cooper, Queens of the Stone Age, Metallica and more.
