About this event
Take a snapshot of any of his movies, and you’ll be able to recognise it immediately as belonging to Wes Anderson’s cinematic universe. From his distinctive use of symmetry to his vivid yet limited colour palette, each frame is a meticulously crafted work of art. This degree of care and control over his filmic visions, where he acts as director, producer, and writer, makes Anderson the epitome of the auteur.
In this talk, Peter Sloane will explore beyond the instantly observable elements of Anderson’s cinematography. Apart from his idiosyncratic style, his films are united by failed parental figures; nostalgia; narratives of escape and redemption; elaborate lateral tracking shots; and a use of music that is almost Wagnerian in its creation of character and mood. Join us as we draw connections between Anderson’s most iconic films, and discover how and why he combines these different modes of storytelling so successfully.
Dr Peter Sloane is Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Literature and Film at the University of Buckingham. He has published widely on film and fiction, including the monographs David Foster Wallace and the Body Routledge, 2019, Kazuo Ishiguro’s Gestural Poetics Bloomsbury, 2021.
Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7.30pm - come down early to grab a good seat!
