Description

Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings is a Modern All-day Brasserie and Bar in Clerkenwell.

With varied eating and drinking spaces, welcoming service and all-day flexibility, Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings offers a creative hub for all those who enjoy the brand’s signature style, day and night. B&H Buildings offers the consistent quality and friendly service of a member’s club, but without any of the membership fees or contrived exclusivity.

Situated just off Exmouth Market, Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings features a large bar serving the brand’s famous cocktails, a 70-cover restaurant and greenhouse, a relaxed café area and characterful private rooms. Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings is the ideal venue for all your celebrations and functions, being the perfect size for a small-medium event and occasionally available for full private hire.

BELOW & HIDDEN

We have a soft spot for small, intimate basements. The history of nightlife is filled with legendary places no bigger than a living room. In such places, traditionally, there is nothing more than somewhere comfortable to sit, small tables, extremely forgiving light, great drinks, charming, cool service and, naturally, amazing music. The best of these places exist as a well-kept secret. They have to. Remember, they are very small. They are the cool opposite of cavernous clubs with queues being marshalled by “security”. Ours is a hazy secret. It is a place for when you don’t feel like winding down the night just yet. Elegant misbehaviour has a place in everyone’s life we think. The Basement is also ideal for a number of different projects. We’ve hosted exhibitions, pop-ups, product launches, cocktail classes, life drawing classes, yoga classes, screenings, literary salons, talks and Q&As.

THE GARDEN ROOM

Walk through the bar, past the Café, and you find yourself in the Garden Room, amongst a verdant expanse of greenery. Capturing the impression of an abandoned country house, where the gardens and state rooms have slowly grown into one another and gone to seed, the Garden Room and Greenhouse makes up the largest restaurant space. Mixing soft furnishings and armchairs with cane garden furniture and wrought iron benches, the whole space is filled with hanging baskets, fully grown trees and trailing creepers, effectively bringing the outside in and offering a relaxed and charming dining experience.

THE GREENHOUSE

Light and airy, and mixing faded grandeur with lush greenery, the Greenhouse is picture-perfect and can take most of the credit for making B&H Buildings one of the most Instagram-worthy venues in London. Sunny and bright during the day, the Greenhouse springs to life at night, as low lighting from the festoons streams through the palms, casting shadows against the white-washed walls.  Beautiful and atmospheric, the Greenhouse provides a stunning setting for larger private dining parties, catering for up to 22 seated guests.

THE CAFÉ

Featuring bentwood mahogany and wicker booths, the café area offers a cosy median between bustling bar and more formal restaurant. This versatile space is perfect for casual dining, catch-up drinks and informal meetings. During the day the café works well for those looking to escape the confines of the office. Equipped with free wifi, endless pots of tea, comfortable seating and large tables, this area is a favourite amongst those who prefer to go about their business in a more relaxed but efficient manner. In the evening, this light and airy space is transformed, lit up by beautiful hanging lights and can be hired for dinner or drinks parties for up to 30 guests.

THE BAR AT B&H BUILDINGS

Occupying the sunny west-facing side of the building, The Bar at B&H Buildings opens onto the street and the leafy park beyond via huge windows and doors.   The bar is ideal for daytime coffees, after-work drinks and informal gatherings. Influenced by those typically seen in a Grand Café, the beautiful marble mosaic bar top itself offers a generous and informal perch for guests wishing to sit closer to the action.  A bar menu is available for bookings, although guests are also very welcome to order from the a la carte restaurant menu.   The bar stocks a range of beers and fine wines, as well as an exhaustive selection of spirits; the star of the show, of course, is Bourne & Hollingsworth’s trademark cocktails, with a list featuring both classics and new creations.

There was a great atmosphere here on Sunday but unfortunately we were disappointed by our brunch experience as the hash browns we had were cooked in an unpleasant cheap tasting oil or fat that left a starchy aftertaste. We had also hoped to have mushrooms included at this price as a standard part of our brunch experience. We hope that you will take note of our complaint as we really like coming to B&H but will be less likely to come again for another brunch unless these improvements are made. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 24 Sep 2017

The management is wonderful! Our reservation was messed up due to the online system and they still managed to seat us right away and give us our prefered table! We were going to B&H for brunch to celebrate a special occasion but this did not seem to matter to the staff who were extremely rude from start to finish. We arrived on time for our booking but were made to wait half an hour for our table - when we finally got to our table the first thing the waiter said was you can only be here for 1.5 hours - no apology for the delay. We then had our brunch and the food was relatively good. However, every time the waiter came he was consciously watching his watch - they did not appear to do this with any other table and from 15 mins before the end of our allocated slot he continued to ask us to move - we hadn't even finished our dessert. The table next to us who had arrived 5 mins before us and with one less guest than us were allowed to stay at their table for longer than 1.5 hours and were never asked to move. To add insult to injury, we were moved to the waiting area to finish our drinks and told we needed to pay now as a private party was arriving - no one else in the restaurant was being forced to pay or leave given there was meant to be a private party. We paid and the waiter then came back with his calculator and accused us of being £7 short - this was highly embarrassing and incorrect and we had in fact overpaid by £0.40 - the waiter should have double checked before coming back to the table and accusing of us of not paying in full. He did not even apologise for this error. We were then asked to move again by another man and we decided to leave - an awful experience and if that is the treatment for a special occasion I dread to think what it would be like for a normal brunch! visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 23 Sep 2017

I had a large birthday brunch with friends and business colleagues on Saturday 5th August 2017. Whilst the venue itself was beautiful and the food nice, the service was appalling. We were sat in the back room (with hanging plants) and served by a young Asian waitress who looked to be in her twenties. The waitress failed to take our full table order, wandering off halfway through to check something and did not return to the table until 25 minutes later we went and called her back to the table. Upon asking for an alternative fruit based option (due to dietary needs) she was rude and again did not come back to the table for over 20 minutes. I myself have waitressed when I was much younger and appreciate the constraints of a busy lunchtime service, but this was incredibly poor. No condiments were offered when the food finally arrived and the waitress did not come back once to check If the food was ok. Upon finishing our meal we declined the service charge - due to the above- and the waitress came back to the table and aggressively challenged why we "had not paid the bill". I was incredibly disappointed with this meal. I had planned to use this as a venue for further celebratory meals and business meetings, but based on this experience I will not be coming again. I would like the venue to contact me regarding this. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 05 Aug 2017

Very disappointing. Staff were not warm, friendly or welcoming. We were left at the door for 10 minutes before being pointed in the direction of our table. The food was cold and the whole session rushed. We were then snapped at to leave our table for the next booking. Since raising our issues via feedback we received a highly rude email from the team basically telling us it was our misunderstanding. No apology or explanation ! The only highlight was one lovely waiter who was attentive and personable. The décor is lovely so it's a shame the aesthetics are better than the service making for a very flat atmosphere and disappointing experience. We wont be returning. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 09 Sep 2017

Really cool place and had a fun atmosphere but a few things weren't great. The full English was disappointing, it was too dry and too salty - which was a shame because the Huevos Benedictos were really really good. Even before the bottomless drinks really started flowing it was difficult to hear a 1-on-1 conversation across a table as the noise really echoed around the restaurant. Perfect for a boozy group brunch with good food but not ideal for a couples brunch. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 17 Sep 2017

I was really looking forward to my birthday night on Friday and I booked a table for downstairs at 10.30. We had been for a meal prior at paesan which was lovely. We went to the bar upstairs and bought some champagne and a few cocktails. unfortunately one of my friends was ill (us ladies with children have all been there... she has 2 kids under 3 and hadn't had a drink in a while and she was still breast feeding...) unfortunately she wasn't very well and we tried to get her some water and sit her outside because we were concerned for her and knew she wasn't feeling well. The bouncer was incrediably rude and aggressive and said that she needed to leave and that we couldn't have glass outside. I asked if they had a plastic cup for some water... nope no plastic... we sorted our friend out ordering her a taxi whilst the manager and bouncer were getting increasingly more and more annoyed at us. We explained the situation and I personally was very apologetic... The rest of my group wanted to go downstairs to enjoy the evening and we were refused to be let downstairs. We had spent quite a bit of money at the bar.. we weren't behaving badly and i was very apologetic about the situation. I found the bouncer and the manager unnecessarily rude and it unfortunately ruined my birthday night. I had come from berkhamsted and was really looking forward to the night and some cocktails..... visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 15 Sep 2017

We had a great brunch really good food. Loving the ambience of the place and the service. My experience was a first time and it definitely won't be my last! I went for brunch and prior to the reservation I had made, the emails were quite prompt, servers are very knowledgeable, helpful, and drinks were at an excellent value and steady flow of Bellini service which was absolutely incredible and extended to food as well. Every customer desire I had was fulfilled and nothing less than excellence. The decor of the entire place (toilets included) was aesthetically pleasing and looked exactly as advertised. 5 Stars and beyond of my experience and I most certainly will be back again for brunch! visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 09 Sep 2017

We had a lot of fun and the food was great, but to be honest an hour and a half isn't really long enough for a relaxed brunch with a group of 8 people. After high recommendation from my friends I was excited to visit this restaurant. As my sister and her husband were visiting from Manchester I wanted to go somewhere special. Overall I was massively disappointed. I had the lamb which was ok but a tiny portion for the price. Ordered a dessert as we weren't full and we waited over 40 mins for a chocolate tart and a panacotta. Which is clearly pre made so I don't understand what took so long. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 31 Aug 2017

Yesterday was my second visit to B&H and it was outstanding. The customer service was impeccable and the staff were absolutely lovely, they made me feel very welcome and valued. This was especially nice as the rest of my lunch party were running really late. The food was high quality, reasonable and delicious with a wide variety of dishes available. The dessert menu is second to none. I didn't get to sample the cocktails on this occasion, but I know from previous experience that they are superb. Going to Bourne & Hollingsworth is always a delight, due to its beautiful decor with colonial touches, and its relaxed Mediterranean vibe, it feels like you could almost be on holiday when you are there! Treated to a gorgeous Birthday Lunch at Bourne and Hollingsworth and was so impressed. Helpful directions for getting there and lovely warm welcome from Clare. Enjoyed a pre-lunch drink, whilst also "drinking in" the delightful surroundings and then went on to enjoy a completely delicious meal in a the very attractive conservatory style restaurant. Service was charming and so attentive to our every need. Staff were sweet about making the Birthday special for me. It felt very special. Am keen to take other friends and family back to sample the lovely food and ambience. Am on the look-out for suitable "occasions" to suggest another trip! visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 22 Aug 2017

The food was lovely but to be honest the service was not very good. I am very disappointed as I had been looking forward to experiencing brunch here for a long time. We felt like our waitress was rushing us throughout the meal. The table comes with a 1.5 hour time slot which we were aware of, but this was repeatedly mentioned to us. With 10 minutes still to go we had paid our bill and we were waiting for a friend to come back from the toilet before leaving but the waitress insisted that they needed the table back immediately. This should have been handled in a classier way and I hope that the staff eventually receive the training they need. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 20 Aug 2017

Really enjoyed the food but the service let it down a little. We were seated at a table laid for three and so asked if we could move to the nicer table for two next to us. The waitress replied saying she'd have to ask. Minutes passed and a waiter entered the room and removed the third place setting at our table. We asked if we could swap tables and he also replied that he'd have to ask. Moments passed and a third waitress enters the room and seats someone else at our preferred table. Minor issue, we move on. The tables surrounding us then have their orders taken while we're ignored. I had to ask someone to take our order. The food arrived and was very good. About 15 minutes before our time being up, a waitress asked informed us that the table would be needed back soon. We said that was fine and asked for the bill. The tables around us had had been offered the menus and able to order second courses. Thankfully we were very full and didn't need or want more food, but it just felt like we were slightly ignored compared to other diners for the duration of our time there. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 20 Aug 2017

Was disappointed that you filled the restaurant up from the front. Leaving the most beautiful part, the conservatory, empty. I know this makes it easier for your staff. But this is at the expense of customer experience. You sell the conservatory as your hero experience on all social media. But do not prioritise this experience for your customers. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 20 Aug 2017

After having a very stressful time getting to B&H buildings, we were running late and was worried we were going to miss our booking however, we rang ahead and kept our table for us. All the staff were understanding and very attentive. At no point did any body have an empty glass at the bottomless brunch, as the waiters were so quick. I was invited as a guest and was charged. Upon explaining the situation I only had one plate taken off the bill. The service, food and drinks upstairs was fantastic. The service really stood out though across the whole space. Lovely, warm, fun staff. They had time to chat with you about the food and drinks and also seemed very happy at work. Downstairs was really cool, although the music was a bit disappointing compared to the other B&H in Soho. Just not as much variety or as clever. They always seem to have great DJs in there. Also the cocktail menu wasn't very enticing compared to Soho or upstairs either. Service though was also excellent and mostly one guy working on his own. Thanks for a fun and special night. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 19 Aug 2017

I'm really sorry to say our visit was very disappointing. As soon as we sat down the waitress told us the kitchen is about to close so we need to order everything ASAP, inclufing predicting if we wanted any puddings. When the food arrived the two cheese burgers were burned, and had black charcoal on both sides and the waitress had forgotten one persons meal so we all had to eat without and leave one guest to watch us eat, then when hers finally arrived she had to eat by herself. Hugely appreciated the complimentary bubbles from Jim and I hate to complain but this experience really wasn't good. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 19 Aug 2017

Cocktails fantastic, octopus very good, my main was a bit average, but then again I had to have it without the sauce due to gluten content, so I probably didn't have the ideal experience. I love the decor, but sitting in a clapped out armchair, however in keeping with the conservarory ambience, was not the most comfortable seat for a dinner, i had to request some cushions to prop me up. The arrival of our mains was painfully slow, I''m not sure why as it was a Tuesday night and didn't seem to be incredibly busy... service was however, friendly and attentive. I would definitely go again and again for drinks, will probably try eating there again at some point, but drinks are definitely a more appealing prospect visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 08 Aug 2017

Very enjoyable, service was very good. Bottomless brunch is worth it! £20.00 for "cakeage" was a bit silly given the money we had already spent there. I always enjoy the atmosphere, however, on wednesday the food was dissapointing. My steak was possibly the worst cut of meet I had ever eaten. Plus it wasn't cooked as required. The pastry on the dessert was dry and tasteless. Also, when requesting a standard cocktal the bar tender, was rude because wedid not accept his reccomendation of a "twisted take" on what we required. The food and drink were good however I've scored a three because of two major things for me. 1. This was a birthday booking for two (which was mentioned on the reservation) at no point did any member of staff make reference to this or provide any sort of celebratory decoration to our order. To top it off by the end of our meal another table was given this service and it was just awkward. 2. Upon finishing our food, I was chatting with my friend and on four occasions a waiter came up to us and asked if we wanted any more drinks we declined. On the second occasion I asked for more water and ice which was provided. Once we confirmed again that we were fine, the waiter took it upon himself to bring us the bill... talk about not feeling wanted. If there were a queue of people waiting I would understand but there wasn't and there were at 3 empty tables beside us. Whilst the food was nice and the drinks, I was disappointed at this level of service especially as the booking was a celebratory one. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 06 Aug 2017

Food was lovely however we were upset with the inflexibility due to allergies and actually very surprised that when asking for a side portion of fries we were told they only came with the burger. I was not able to participate in bottomless brunch as I was allergic to the fruit in the Bellini and no provision could be made around this at all. We weren't asked for any allergy information before going either. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 06 Aug 2017

We love coming here, and its been our favourite spot since it was fairly new! However this time we had a waiter who left a bitter taste in our mouths. I understand that they need to be mindful of who is using the bottomless bellini's- He said that he would charge us for an extra bellini just because my friends glass was close to me (and he believed I was drinking it, which I was not). This was accusatory and disappointing, and really put us off! He was also rushing us from about 5:30 onwards (it closed at 6) to pay and leave. Odd as there were many diners still there who were there before us. All this with a weird fake smile. A shame as all other waiters have always been fantastic. 5 stars for B&H, 0 for waiter! visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 06 Aug 2017
