Description

Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings is a Modern All-day Brasserie and Bar in Clerkenwell.

With varied eating and drinking spaces, welcoming service and all-day flexibility, Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings offers a creative hub for all those who enjoy the brand’s signature style, day and night. B&H Buildings offers the consistent quality and friendly service of a member’s club, but without any of the membership fees or contrived exclusivity.

Situated just off Exmouth Market, Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings features a large bar serving the brand’s famous cocktails, a 70-cover restaurant and greenhouse, a relaxed café area and characterful private rooms. Bourne & Hollingsworth Buildings is the ideal venue for all your celebrations and functions, being the perfect size for a small-medium event and occasionally available for full private hire.

BELOW & HIDDEN

We have a soft spot for small, intimate basements. The history of nightlife is filled with legendary places no bigger than a living room. In such places, traditionally, there is nothing more than somewhere comfortable to sit, small tables, extremely forgiving light, great drinks, charming, cool service and, naturally, amazing music. The best of these places exist as a well-kept secret. They have to. Remember, they are very small. They are the cool opposite of cavernous clubs with queues being marshalled by “security”. Ours is a hazy secret. It is a place for when you don’t feel like winding down the night just yet. Elegant misbehaviour has a place in everyone’s life we think. The Basement is also ideal for a number of different projects. We’ve hosted exhibitions, pop-ups, product launches, cocktail classes, life drawing classes, yoga classes, screenings, literary salons, talks and Q&As.

THE GARDEN ROOM

Walk through the bar, past the Café, and you find yourself in the Garden Room, amongst a verdant expanse of greenery. Capturing the impression of an abandoned country house, where the gardens and state rooms have slowly grown into one another and gone to seed, the Garden Room and Greenhouse makes up the largest restaurant space. Mixing soft furnishings and armchairs with cane garden furniture and wrought iron benches, the whole space is filled with hanging baskets, fully grown trees and trailing creepers, effectively bringing the outside in and offering a relaxed and charming dining experience.

THE GREENHOUSE

Light and airy, and mixing faded grandeur with lush greenery, the Greenhouse is picture-perfect and can take most of the credit for making B&H Buildings one of the most Instagram-worthy venues in London. Sunny and bright during the day, the Greenhouse springs to life at night, as low lighting from the festoons streams through the palms, casting shadows against the white-washed walls.  Beautiful and atmospheric, the Greenhouse provides a stunning setting for larger private dining parties, catering for up to 22 seated guests.

THE CAFÉ

Featuring bentwood mahogany and wicker booths, the café area offers a cosy median between bustling bar and more formal restaurant. This versatile space is perfect for casual dining, catch-up drinks and informal meetings. During the day the café works well for those looking to escape the confines of the office. Equipped with free wifi, endless pots of tea, comfortable seating and large tables, this area is a favourite amongst those who prefer to go about their business in a more relaxed but efficient manner. In the evening, this light and airy space is transformed, lit up by beautiful hanging lights and can be hired for dinner or drinks parties for up to 30 guests.

THE BAR AT B&H BUILDINGS

Occupying the sunny west-facing side of the building, The Bar at B&H Buildings opens onto the street and the leafy park beyond via huge windows and doors.   The bar is ideal for daytime coffees, after-work drinks and informal gatherings. Influenced by those typically seen in a Grand Café, the beautiful marble mosaic bar top itself offers a generous and informal perch for guests wishing to sit closer to the action.  A bar menu is available for bookings, although guests are also very welcome to order from the a la carte restaurant menu.   The bar stocks a range of beers and fine wines, as well as an exhaustive selection of spirits; the star of the show, of course, is Bourne & Hollingsworth’s trademark cocktails, with a list featuring both classics and new creations.

Had a fabulous evening celebrating my twins' 21st birthday in the "kitchen dining room" at B&H Buildings. The room was beautifully candle lit, providing an intimate ambience and the food was lovely. Sheldon, Hamadi and especially Matt (our waiter, who oversaw the evening) were all fantastic. Couldn't have been more helpful or attentive. I would also like to thank Nikki at head office, who helped with the initial arrangements and menu orders. I would absolutely recommend to any-one who is looking for a private dining experience for a special occasion. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 11 Nov 2017

The food, waiters and interiors are nice enough. Unfortunately, the gentlemen on front of house was one of the rudest I've met. When we informed him that one member of our party of 4 could no longer attend, he looked at us as if we were dirt. For all he knew they may have had a sick family member to look after. I could understand if it messed up seating but they put us on a table for 6 anyway! We felt so unwelcome and unfortunately however high the opinion of the FoH staff, it really isn't all that... visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 12 Nov 2017

Took us a while to be seated (about 30mins after original slot started) and seemed very busy! Food came out quickly and was really tasty, Prosecco was free flowing and service was excellent - what more can you ask for from a bottomless brunch?! Food was great but the service was not very good at all, the brunch was certainly not bottomless and many of our party where left with empty glasses for quite a long time. It was disappointing and overpriced in comparison to other brunches I have been too, I would reccomend going but not for bottomless brunch at all! visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 04 Nov 2017

We held a private party at Below and Hidden and it was incredible! The venue is so different and all our guests had a great time and enjoyed the atmosphere. The service from Joel who helped us organise the event was amazing, he did us some good deals and made sure we were looked after. On the night the two bar staff we had in our private room had amazing knowledge, made delicious cocktails and were a lot of fun! An incredible venue and great find, I highly recommend it! Thank you to all the team for all your help in organising my husbands 30th birthday! Palvi visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 03 Nov 2017

Beautiful decor but I was really disappointed with B&H. Service was very slow - took 15 mins for someone to take our order and topping up our bottomless drinks was also at snails pace so we had to keep asking different staff loads of times for a top up. The food wasn't great either. I had the banana and coconut pancakes and found them to be on the cold side and very average. Such a shame especially as it was a birthday celebration. I was given a private room which was absolutely gorgeous - it is beautifully decorated! The food was good which was served quickly and the service was really good. Only downfall was that it only opens at 10.00, so if you get there early (despite the rain), they will not let you in. One is also not taken to their table straight away which means it cuts down on your time to eat and enjoy, as there is about an an hour and a half that one can be at their table. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 04 Nov 2017

Go for the atmosphere, the lovely staff and the building....but sadly food is quite average and more expensive than it's worth. Chorizo (as an extra side) was sooo good but everything else was a bit nothing-y. The braised beef brunch dish was literally a bowl of potatoes and a mouthful of beef. I hate being mean when everyone was so lovely but food wasn't anywhere near expectations. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 29 Oct 2017

I was coming home to the UK for my birthday and really wanted to get my friends together for a meal. I loved this restaurant when I lived here, it’s such a pretty venue and the cocktails and food are delicious. I called on a Tuesday hoping against hope I could make a Friday night booking for 8 people. I was so excited when Joel said we could be squeezed in! Over the week quite a few more friends decided they could join us however - until suddenly it was a party of 14. Joel couldn’t have been more helpful in arranging a private room, the chef was wonderful in putting together a vegetarian and vegan friendly menu, and the staff were so lovely on the night. All my friends were so impressed by the food, atmosphere and great DJ in the basement club afterwards - they will all be booking at B&H in the future. Fabulous evening, so last minute and so greatly appreciated. Thank you to the whole team! visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 27 Oct 2017

The place is beautiful, but the service and food were below average and slow. They kept confusing and forgetting our order and being incredibly slow. They then tried to rush us to give the table to someone else even though it was their fault we were behind. The food and service were very good. The atmosphere was my favourite part of this restaurant. The portions are small so i advise to order starters and/or sides. The dessert was my favuorite dish. The eestaurant is very cozy and a place to go with your girlsfriends to catch up, take your parents, and a romantic date with your partner. It is suitable for all occasions. The dress code is smart casual. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 27 Oct 2017

came with a group of 10 for a birthday. firstly, we arrived on time and had to wait almost half an hour for the table with no where to sit or have a drink. we all ordered bottomless drinks. they were extremely slow to come- and the waitress kept missing people out of the rounds. when we pointed out 1/2 drinks were missing, none were brought. she also kept serving one end of the table and not the other. we repeatedly pointed out everything and no efforts made to correct. this is the first time I have ever complained about a venue- not something I would usually do. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 21 Oct 2017

I showed my enquiry confirmation and booking confirmation upon arriving. The man greeting the customers told me that despite my confirmed booking email, I was not on the system. When challenging him, he told me that because my confirmation email was sent that morning it didn't count. He was very rude and did not try to help us. We decided to wait on the off chance that a table became free before giving up and sitting at the bar. At the end of what would have been a pleasant brunch we paid the bill before the waiter told us he was planning to take the coffees off but didn't remember to. Unfortunately not a good first experience especially as it was brunch for my birthday. Our table wasn't ready at the time we booked so we waited on the sofas, nobody offered us drinks, when we were finally seated on a dirty table, nobody came to give us menus or lay the table for ten minutes, the brownie that my friends had pre-ordered for my birthday as a surprise had sold out despite pre-order! Lovely food, amazing place and they looked after us so well. The waiting staff were all so friendly and great and the chefs made amazing food for 10 of us when we turned up late for our reservation with 15 minuets left of kitchen service...(we are the worst people). Went here for bottomless brunch late on a Sunday afternoon which was a nice time to come as it wasn't too busy. Drinks were great and we didn't really have to wait for refills- they weren't stingy. The food wasn't amazing, we all made some changes to our meal- not ridiculous ones mind you, just breakfast without a tomato and they just couldn't get it right which was disappointing because everything else was great. Staff are lovely and we sat in the conservatory which is a dream l.

The atmosphere is great - the building and the buzz, you can't deny that. I think that's about where the good stuff ends! Cocktails are okay, not out of this world or particularly special. The food is really average, it doesn't feel very fresh but I guess that is because you have such a high turnover of people, you have to churn it out. I thought it was incredibly stingy and very tacky that you had to pay for extra maple syrup; not even McDonalds doesn't that? Really made the place go down in my estimation. I wouldn't go back. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 07 Oct 2017

We were looking forward to our breakfast but this was mitigated by the following: Reminding people that 90 minutes is up really detracts from the experience. The surroundings are amazing but the food is very average. You would think that that the decor would match the food in terms of quality and effort. Won't be taking a chance again. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 24 Sep 2017

To whom it may concern, This Sunday my friends and I attended a much anticipated brunch at your establishment. On arrival everything was fine and we ordered our drinks and food. As it got busier it felt that when asking for our drinks it was quite a "hassle" for our waitress. Although I understand you have a busy period, she was quite short with us and we were left waiting for condiments, were told a mimosa was not possible and that a full English "wasn't very filling." Our food was also disappointing although it did arrive speedily. Although politely asked we were told at 5 to 2 we had to leave our table (we had the table until 2.30) and that we could sit at the bar (we had a 6 month old child with us so that was definitely not an option) she then tried to take our payment after bringing us the bill before we had even finished ordering. The toilets didn't have any toilet paper - we had to ask. Overall although our setting was incredible and we loved the place itself we were extremely disappointed with our service and felt that we were actually annoying our server by being there. Very disappointing. Obviously we paid in full and paid our service charge as we didn't want to cause a scene on such a busy afternoon but if there was anything you could do to compensate us for our spoiled brunch that would be amazing. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 01 Oct 2017

The decor and space was beautiful, but overall our breakfast was expensive for the food we received - i.e., the portions were pretty small for the prices, and we were all still hungry after our meals so ordered another round of food. We felt rushed and were reminded a couple of times that our table was booked for 1.5 hours only - this despite the restaurant being fairly quiet and no one waiting for our table. It was a nice place, and convenient to meet up fairly centrally with friends, but I wouldn't come again if it was just about the food. On a final note - the waitress was friendly, but made a mistake adding up our payments for the bill at the end, and insisted we still owed £35. We were made to feel rather embarrassed and as if we were trying to get away without paying our bill until we pulled out our receipts to show proof of payment. Thinking about it now, I'd probably not rush to book here again. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 01 Oct 2017

I was first disappointed with the food didn’t full me up very little potion, went to eat elsewhere afterwards and to add insult to the injury. The price was just not worth it, felt robbed especially after coming from Rugby, West Midlands for my anniversary and having thought this was the place to celebrate. My wife and I felt the food was not up to par! Won’t be coming back for more. The staff were really nice just a shame the food and price were totally opposite. Came all the way from Rugby for my anniversary with my wife and I thought this would be a nice place. But I was wrong, the pictures over Exaggerate the place. There was a great atmosphere here on Sunday but unfortunately we were disappointed by our brunch experience as the hash browns we had were cooked in an unpleasant cheap tasting oil or fat that left a starchy aftertaste. We had also hoped to have mushrooms included at this price as a standard part of our brunch experience. We hope that you will take note of our complaint as we really like coming to B&H but will be less likely to come again for another brunch unless these improvements are made. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 24 Sep 2017

We were going to B&H for brunch to celebrate a special occasion but this did not seem to matter to the staff who were extremely rude from start to finish. We arrived on time for our booking but were made to wait half an hour for our table - when we finally got to our table the first thing the waiter said was you can only be here for 1.5 hours - no apology for the delay. We then had our brunch and the food was relatively good. However, every time the waiter came he was consciously watching his watch - they did not appear to do this with any other table and from 15 mins before the end of our allocated slot he continued to ask us to move - we hadn't even finished our dessert. The table next to us who had arrived 5 mins before us and with one less guest than us were allowed to stay at their table for longer than 1.5 hours and were never asked to move. To add insult to injury, we were moved to the waiting area to finish our drinks and told we needed to pay now as a private party was arriving - no one else in the restaurant was being forced to pay or leave given there was meant to be a private party. We paid and the waiter then came back with his calculator and accused us of being £7 short - this was highly embarrassing and incorrect and we had in fact overpaid by £0.40 - the waiter should have double checked before coming back to the table and accusing of us of not paying in full. He did not even apologise for this error. We were then asked to move again by another man and we decided to leave - an awful experience and if that is the treatment for a special occasion I dread to think what it would be like for a normal brunch! visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 23 Sep 2017

I had a large birthday brunch with friends and business colleagues on Saturday 5th August 2017. Whilst the venue itself was beautiful and the food nice, the service was appalling. We were sat in the back room (with hanging plants) and served by a young Asian waitress who looked to be in her twenties. The waitress failed to take our full table order, wandering off halfway through to check something and did not return to the table until 25 minutes later we went and called her back to the table. Upon asking for an alternative fruit based option (due to dietary needs) she was rude and again did not come back to the table for over 20 minutes. I myself have waitressed when I was much younger and appreciate the constraints of a busy lunchtime service, but this was incredibly poor. No condiments were offered when the food finally arrived and the waitress did not come back once to check If the food was ok. Upon finishing our meal we declined the service charge - due to the above- and the waitress came back to the table and aggressively challenged why we "had not paid the bill". I was incredibly disappointed with this meal. I had planned to use this as a venue for further celebratory meals and business meetings, but based on this experience I will not be coming again. I would like the venue to contact me regarding this. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 05 Aug 2017

Very disappointing. Staff were not warm, friendly or welcoming. We were left at the door for 10 minutes before being pointed in the direction of our table. The food was cold and the whole session rushed. We were then snapped at to leave our table for the next booking. Since raising our issues via feedback we received a highly rude email from the team basically telling us it was our misunderstanding. No apology or explanation ! The only highlight was one lovely waiter who was attentive and personable. The décor is lovely so it's a shame the aesthetics are better than the service making for a very flat atmosphere and disappointing experience. We wont be returning. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 09 Sep 2017

Really cool place and had a fun atmosphere but a few things weren't great. The full English was disappointing, it was too dry and too salty - which was a shame because the Huevos Benedictos were really really good. Even before the bottomless drinks really started flowing it was difficult to hear a 1-on-1 conversation across a table as the noise really echoed around the restaurant. Perfect for a boozy group brunch with good food but not ideal for a couples brunch. visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 17 Sep 2017

I was really looking forward to my birthday night on Friday and I booked a table for downstairs at 10.30. We had been for a meal prior at paesan which was lovely. We went to the bar upstairs and bought some champagne and a few cocktails. unfortunately one of my friends was ill (us ladies with children have all been there... she has 2 kids under 3 and hadn't had a drink in a while and she was still breast feeding...) unfortunately she wasn't very well and we tried to get her some water and sit her outside because we were concerned for her and knew she wasn't feeling well. The bouncer was incrediably rude and aggressive and said that she needed to leave and that we couldn't have glass outside. I asked if they had a plastic cup for some water... nope no plastic... we sorted our friend out ordering her a taxi whilst the manager and bouncer were getting increasingly more and more annoyed at us. We explained the situation and I personally was very apologetic... The rest of my group wanted to go downstairs to enjoy the evening and we were refused to be let downstairs. We had spent quite a bit of money at the bar.. we weren't behaving badly and i was very apologetic about the situation. I found the bouncer and the manager unnecessarily rude and it unfortunately ruined my birthday night. I had come from berkhamsted and was really looking forward to the night and some cocktails..... visited Bourne and Hollingsworth Buildings on 15 Sep 2017
