Description

Shane's is field to plate dining.

Having been involved in a background of farming and fishing, teaching bush survival and foraging, Shane's wanted to open a restaurant that incorporated their passions and shows - without being in your face - what New Zealand philosophy is to food.

More than that they are bringing the environment in and letting you interact with it in a simple relaxed environment. They are about wild meats, line caught fish, foraging and seasonal produce. Shane's has the best steaks, venison, rabbit and wood pigeon, as well as line caught fish and oyster specials.

Quality wines, in a smart casual atmosphere - but more importantly you can trust that we know where their stuff comes from. Their food is honest and so are their prices.

The service and food were excellent. A great place for a sunny Saturday brunch after a dog walk along the river. I was impressed that the bottomless brunch included Union lager, prosecco, bloody Marys and house wine. Em visited Shane's On Canalside on 17 Jun 2017

Kindly and solicitous staff, but a hopeless kitchen. very slow and my food was raw in the middle and had to be sent back. What then arrived was not what I'd ordered. Food was not of the standard of Chatsworth Road. We are still loyal to Shane's though. visited Shane's On Canalside on 21 May 2017

Not impressed with the quality of the food. Was served raw chicken burger which quite frankly is shocking. Thankfully I cut into the burger before eating it! Was only offered £1 discount for the bad experience. visited Shane's On Canalside on 20 May 2017

Food was good, we had a early sitting so atmosphere wasn't great as there were only a few people eating. Would like to re visit on a busy night. Average pricing. visited Shane's On Canalside on 19 May 2017

Menu in the restaurant is different than the one on their web site. There was only few options for vegetarians. Our waitress was really helpful, friendly and welcoming but our order was taken from another waiter and he was absolutely rubbish at his job. We asked things about the menu and he replied to our questions with one word-replies. Cocktails were very strong! Never had that strong mojito, all I could taste was alcohol. Overall wouldn't recommend if you're a vegetarian and maybe stick to the draught beer. visited Shane's On Canalside on 13 May 2017

We got a call at 345 on the day to say the kitchen had to close early for essential maintenance!!! So had to cancel. As we were already on our 2 hr journey from Norfolk to get there, we were not impressed as we were meeting my daughter from Kent for a birthday celebration. Where else in Stratford does one go ?? More like they had no other bookings and wanted to shut on a Monday. Disgraceful! visited Shane's On Canalside on 08 May 2017

Good service despite the waiter being on his own all evening. The menu wasattarctive and gave a wide choice, the quality of food very good. Several of the fresh vegatable dishes could have done with a sauce to help bind them together more. Overall a good experiance and one we will repeat! visited Shane's On Canalside on 05 May 2017

Shane's is expectably super busy but they are friendly and we were seated swiftly. I'm not having a booking made any difference though. Food was lovely - a good selection for coeliac/ gluten-free diners and non-dairy options lined out too. Cocktails also decent and well priced (at £8 ish). On the incredibly sunny Sunday we went, it was a totally glorious spot. Hanna visited Shane's On Canalside on 09 Apr 2017

Service was slightly patchy (having to ask for cutlery with our main course and having to ask twice for dessert menus) but the guy serving us was new and very sweet. The food was excellent and the atmosphere was lovely too. I thought it was really good value for what we ate and drank visited Shane's On Canalside on 01 Apr 2017

Ok. Great position on the canal & stylish decor. Food sounded great but was a bit average when it arrived and the portion of fish I ordered was tiny. Could be fantastic, just needs a bit more thought. laura10 visited Shane's On Canalside on 30 Mar 2017

Booked a visit for a Sunday lunch for 4 people to celebrate a birthday/ mother's day at Shane's on Canalside. On arrival it immediately seemed understaffed and the staff seemed very stressed out (despite not all the tables being full) We asked for some olives and Guinness bread to start but were told they were low on olives so couldn't provide them and that they were out of bread (however later on we saw other diners with a pot of olives to share). Also asked for a glass of sparkling water at one point but were told that was also sold out! We all had the roast, which was good value for money. However the venison was not very hot at all - but we couldn't send it back as it was impossible to flag down the staff! The beef was quite dry and tough to cut. Tasted okay. Shame there was no Pheasant on the menu, and the kentucky fried rabbit also seemed to be missing (we had seen these items on the menu online prior to our visit). After our main course plates were taken away we ordered desserts but these took a long time to come out. When asking for the bill, we mentioned the mother's day offer that we had seen on the website and on twitter but the staff didn't seem to know anything about it! However they did go on to honour it in the end which was appreciated. However when the bill eventually came it was completely wrong - they had undercharged us significantly so we highlighted it to the staff but even then it took so long to amend it to the correct amount - perhaps we should have left it as the incorrect, cheaper amount! Meanwhile the couple on the table next to us mentioned that they had been waiting for an hour and had still not received their food. It's a shame as the place has great potential and is in a great location, fab for a sunny day, but unfortunately the staff and the kitchen can't seem to keep up with what's going on. visited Shane's On Canalside on 26 Mar 2017

Tool 1.5 hours to get our starter but when the food did arrive it was tasty. Shame we were so ravenous by that time though. We dined on Black Friday so were treated to 50% off all drinks and food - result!! Not sure how much they promoted it as it was pretty quiet in there and it could have attracted more. The cocktails are superb; ham hock croquettes really super; desserts good, I had a small yet delicious chocolate fondant. Good wine list too! The main meals are small - and the meat (I had the bavette steak and it was pretty tough and cold) and some of the others meats were flavourless. For the price we were really happy but would definitely go back for cocktails and small bites but not so much on the main meals. visited Shane's On Canalside on 25 Nov 2016

Great food, nice surroundings. A little off-putting that when I arrived having booked online to be told that there was not a booking and this was insisted upon by the staff. I pointed out that I had booked online, someone had called me to discuss the champagne that I had requested be waiting on the table and only when I showed them the booking confirmation did they seem to believe me. So in short great food, good value but a little spoilt by having to provide proof of a booking they clearly had or should have had to hand and of course the Champagne surprise was not there. visited Shane's On Canalside on 11 Oct 2016

Took parents here on a Saturday night and I wouldn't do it again. Service was shambolic, it wasn't very busy however they managed to ignore us for ages, mess up the order on two dishes, not bring plates or cutlery, And then randomly another member of staff would bring a fork for a meal that had already been and gone - so it all felt quite careless. Also, three things had run out from the menu. Food was good and so was the wine. geography13 visited Shane's On Canalside on 24 Sep 2016

Went to this newish restaurant for Sunday lunch. Sorry to say it was a disaster. The menus was totally confusing as they had printed it on the back of an old one so no one knew what was actually available . Eventually we sorted that and ordered starters and mains. We waited an age and then Everything can at once so never really ate the starters . Some dishes were OK a couple were good and the rest pretty average but it was the service that really was a disaster . We must have waited around 45 mins to get starter then mains came 2 minutes after with no apology . then after we had eaten we couldn't get anyone to clear. In the end we just got the bill and went somewhere else for coffee and pudding. No one even seemed aware we were having a problem . Shame it is a good venue by the canal. Great food, location and staff. We were made to feel very welcome and thoroughly enjoyed the food and wine. The area was lacking in an accessible but serious restaurant since the closing of the Hackney Pearl, and this one more than fits the bill. It will be my go to restaurant for a number of occasions and I look forward to trying more of the menu. There were some speed-bumps for the staff as I think the power went to part of the kitchen on opening night, but we were unaware of this until the end of the meal. Happy to recommend this place to anyone. Rob visited Shane's On Canalside on 10 Jun 2016
