Description

Since its opening in July of 2012, LARDO is stylish bar and restaurant that has come to occupy the iconic Arthaus building and has been welcomed into the Hackney bar and restaurant scene with open arms. Offering a non-traditional take on the classic pizzeria, Damian Currie (ex St. John Bread & Wine and Zucca) follows the seasons of Italy, serving up a selection of Southern dishes in the summer and a move to the North during the winter with a menu that changes daily.

All pasta and breads are made in-house, and the charcuterie is made from Mangalitza pigs raised in Somerset and produced at Native Breeds in Gloucestershire. LARDO also serve a selection of classic cocktails, and boast an impressive wine list that can be served by the glass, carafe or bottle.

Perfect for an after-work bite to eat, a catch up with friends over a few drinks or a night with that special someone, LARDO is a chilled out space that tastes as good as it looks.

I really like the restaurant and still do but it seems to have got a bit worse recently. You ran out of 2 different Seconds and in the end gave us Mackerel which was OK but not really worth £20. I think there may have been some pine nuts in the sauce too and i'm slightly allergic to nuts so that made it a bit uncomfortable. The Primi was tasty but whilst i agree that simple can be good, it seems like the more exciting options you used to have have disappeared. Also, i think it's a shame that you now make people order 3 salamis together for £15 rather than being able to order one. But the service was friendly as ever and i still like the place, just i was a bit disappointed on a few fronts. visited LARDO on 22 Jun 2017

Food was amazing as always. Service also fantastic with the waiters really caring about the food. Educating us and asking what we thought of everything. Only comment would be that the manager on the night seem stressed or flustered which impacted the vibe a bit. He was also very autocratic with his team which didn't come across well to guests. Especially given that the waiters were just so good. A minor point on an otherwise perfect evening. visited LARDO on 22 Jun 2017

Laughable service. Sat in the sun for 45 mins waiting for two pizzas, which after chasing twice, didn't materialise. No real apology, just an excuse that our order had been misplaced. We left without eating. Several other tables suffering from poor service too. Disappointing. visited LARDO on 18 Jun 2017

Enjoyed the yummy pizza, and venue was cool. However drinks service simply took too long both on arrival and for a second drink at the end of the meal. You guys need to tighten this up if I'm coming back. visited LARDO on 18 Jun 2017

Good food but service chaotic . Our main course order was forgotten even though there were only a few people in the restaurant when we ordered . Waiters didn t seem to know which tables the orders were for with plates being offered to the wrong tables throughout . A cool relaxed vibe should not preclude efficient service ! Having said that we enjoyed our stuffed courgette flowers , lemon burrata and Monkfish and Pizza mains . visited LARDO on 17 Jun 2017

I'm not interested in 'posting' - I just hope this review is read by whoever runs Lardo. Had heard about phenomenal success of the restaurant and booked for pre-Hackney-Empire supper on 15 June. Chose from the Antipasti: Marinda tomato tonnato: Tonnato sauce was excellent, just as served in Piemonte, but the tomato was so over-ripe (i.e. mushy) that we took some time working out whether the dish was or was not supposed to be made with cooked tomato! Slicing a tomato in that condition so thinly was a triumph of the sharpness of the chef's knife and of his or her skill - but she or he shouldn't have let a tomato like that out of the kitchen. Aubergine, labne etc: almost tasteless. Involtini: Beef was dry and tough; green filling and dressing very pleasant. Arancini: delicious! Olives: fine. Prices: Far higher than I imagined they would be for what you get. So there we are - may try again one day if we're going to be in the area, but for us sadly Lardo isn't going to be a 'destination' restaurant. Lardo's menu seems full of Italian promise - but sadly on this occasion that promise wasn't fulfilled. visited LARDO on 15 Jun 2017

Lovely for he most part. However the cod was underdone and they forgot the aioli. They also didn't have the polpette (though they are still on the menu!) which is a shame as they are one of the best things they've ever had. Also lacking in meaty pizzas. visited LARDO on 06 Jun 2017

I am sorry to say that your prices are really too high, the pizza was ok, but not exeptional, when I pay £15 for a pizza I expect something really amazing, but to be honest I had better pizza for half of the price in est London. The service charge was ridicolously high as well, we had a good experience overall but I would not recommend your restaurant for pizza, the wine is overpriced and the desserts where average. visited LARDO on 20 May 2017

Too loud, the acoustics were terrible and the seats too close together the waiting staff couldn't even get to our table. Pizza is lovely but the Frito misto - three oil sodden courgette flowers - was not worth £8.00. Meh. I don't see what the fuss is all about. visited LARDO on 28 May 2017

The food was really good and the staff were very polite and trying their best unfortunately there were either overbooked or understaffed. I turned up on time for my reservation on time at 8pm however didn't get seated at my table until 8:50pm and even once seated the service was very slow which was unfortunate as the food was great. visited LARDO on 26 May 2017

Absolutely dismal service.....continuously had to repeat ourselves to our waiters for drinks that were missing, food missing etc. Didn't bother clearing table once we had finished......basically just seemed completely oblivious that we were there. I think this was a general thing in the restaurant & not confined to that one waiter. For example When we asked a seaparare waitress where our last drink was, she rudely said "well I'm sure it will arrive eventually". The whole service was so bad even the food , which was mediocre at best, couldn't make up for it. Dreadful visited LARDO on 28 May 2017

Dear LARDO crew! I came last night(18.5) to have a dinner with my hubby and unfortunately, like my previous visit I left the restaurant little disappointed. I should mention the food before strting to talk about anything else. Food is AMAZING! Just perfect, five stars! I was just amazed by the flavours and the playful way of designing a masterpiece dish. So there you go, one of the best experiences with food in London. Unfortunately, waiting was a bit of different story. To be completely honest, I felt that all the waiters where not professionals, lacking knowledge of the delicious menu, basic understanding of how to deal with customers. Manager at the time of our dinner was absolutely fantastic, keeping an eye over all the tables just in case someone needed anything. Others, I would never hire in my own restaurant. In my 15 years of experience waiting in various restaurants, I've always felt that there is a fine line of being casual but attending customers needs and being lazy. I respect the decision to have a laid back italian restaurant but even then, good waiting diesn't need to only happen in posh places. Honestly, I don't know if I want to come again. Although I feel that ghe delicious food and drinks(omg the danish bloody mary) will force me to visit in the future. Don't get me wrong here, I don't expect that I am being treated like a royalty(although I did try in my career always leave my ego at the door and be there just for the customers, I can count difficult customers in one hand as I feel its a lot to do how you approach their problems rather than theh are just diificult), but I do expect that I have someone to take drinks order in the first five minutes when the restaurant has three tables with customers, having a side plate for clams and other little bits and things that left you feel that the crew of the restaurant has taken care of me rather than I've had to take care of myself. But again, EXCELLENT FOOD! If the waiting can level with the delicious food Im sure you'll be the most visited italian restaurant in East London. Also, Im looking for a job for this summer and if there is any views that go along withwhat you expect from a waiter, hive me a shout and I'll send you my CV or come and visit. deails: mariko.sero@gmail.com With Kind Regards, Mariko Sero visited LARDO on 18 May 2017

Attentive and informed service - sociable, and reassuringly informed about the dishes on the menu. The food itself was exceptional. I wouldn't usually order poussin, owing to previous experience of it being boney/little meat/fiddly to eat. BUT Lardo's pouissin was a revelation - meaty, buttery, delicious. We love this place. Great food and wine. Fabulous pizza and small plates. I must say though we were let down by the pasta for the first time ever. We ordered the rage and it came out very dry, with very little sauce or meat. We saw other plates of the same dish go out looking much much better so it was just ours that was off. Hi there, Firstly I have to say that Lardo is one of my favourite restaurants in town! However our experience on Friday night was a bit disappointing. First of all, I mentioned that I was vegetarian and ordered the risotto at which point our waitress pointed out that it had chicken stock in it. I asked if all the risottos at Lardo were made this way at which she answered yes. I was horrified because I've been a strict vegetarian since I was six years old and have eaten your risottos on other occasions. no one had ever told me it wasn't vegetarian and there is nothing written on the board or the menu to suggest this either. I would expect this in other countries like France but not the U.K.! Please make sure to amend this over site. And would you consider using veggie stock instead?! It's just as good! Secondly, when we ordered our dishes we were asked what order we would like them to come in. We specified what our preference would be. The food then took an incredibly long time to come and then when it did finally arrive, it came in a completely different order to requested. On top of this one dish was missing. When we tried to enquire about it our waitress was no where to be found. In fact she disappeared entirely for what felt like at least 20 mins. Pretty frustrating! In the end we managed to get another waiters attention at which point we ordered some wine. About 10 mins later we were asked quite brusquely to pay the bill and go as there were guest waiting for our table! We felt very hurried out after only really being served what it was we requested. Despite this the food was very good. Compliments to the chef! Usually (especially when we have your lovely and brilliant Scottish waitress) we have a very positive experience. Thanks. visited LARDO on 07 Apr 2017

I am sorry to have to complain as I actually love Lardo and have had a great time there on many occasions. I'd therefore like to think that my experience there on Friday was only a blip but we really didn't have a good meal! It was probably the wrong venue to have chosen that evening as it turns out that my companion doesn't like sharing and, though she usually adores pizza, said she really didn't want one that evening despite my protestations about them being very, very good at Lardo. We started instead with fritto misto which was mostly batter (and far too oily) on very large chunks of boring vegetables and with a winter salad which was tough and completely tasteless. My risotto was very good but my friend's poussin was burnt and the meat rubbery - the manager agreed that it was inedible and didn't charge us for it (I was rather shocked to see that it should have cost us £19 which seems hugely expensive for what is, frankly, a small chicken garnished with a huge pile of rocket - I challenge anyone to enjoy chewing their way through such a dry and spiky heap of the stuff!). I was so disappointed and embarrassed because I had been singing the praises of Lardo to my friend and had been pleased that we finally had an opportunity to eat closer to home when we usually only have time for a quick bite in the West End. She said we just 'chose badly' but it should be impossible to do that in a restaurant where I have always eaten well and had a good time. I feel a bit sad. visited LARDO on 24 Mar 2017

The food was lovely, I especially recommend the fresh pasta – whatever the special of the day was I’m sure they would always be delightful, we had both and thoroughly enjoyed them! Where LARDO let itself down was in the service, we had a 6.30 booking but with the previous table leaving were seated around 6.45 - no real concern there, that happens. We ordered and ate, nothing either special or poor about the general service throughout the night but it was upon leaving that we were frustrated. Around 8 we finished our food and they asked if we wanted dessert, we were full so said no. They then frantically started removing all the crockery from the table including water glasses, and even a non-finished wine whilst one of our party was in the bathroom. The waitress returned 8.15 to tell us we needed to leave to allow another table to sit as we were not eating dessert and promptly put down our bill. Before we had even opened the bill she was back with the card machine hovering over us to pay asap. I’ve worked many years in hospitality and whilst I appreciate the art that is managing tables is difficult and we were aware we had 2 hours on the table but essentially we were seated 15 mins late and kicked out early without even trying to hide it was because weren’t spending any more. I heard whom I assume is the owner discussing how busy they were which is all well and good but it left a rather sudden end to what was a lovely meal and what should have been a relaxing night. Definitely check this place out, the food is great, but maybe avoid the busier nights! visited LARDO on 25 Mar 2017

Not good at all. We ordered two pizzas between two and we asked them to have one as a starter and the other one as main. The first arrived as was actually ok. But then we were left waiting for more than 30 minutes for the second one. It never arrived. After asking for it twice, we decided to cancel it. Even then, the maitre-d was defensive bordering on hostile trying to defend such poor service. Avoid this place. visited LARDO on 18 Mar 2017

Nice welcoming in the entrance my manager, and always a lovely vibe at the space. I'm a regular that lives close and are a fan of the menu. Unfortunately it was very bad service for the rest of the night. As it was my birthday dinner this was pretty sad. The floor seemed understaffed as one girl mainly was looking over all the tables. We order some Olives to eat before the food. The order got forgotten and came at the same time as the food which made it pretty point less. Once the 3rd guest in our group just after we placed our order she had to wait about 30 min for her pizza (margarita) but we got ours way faster. And there wasn't a big group coming in between that space. The waitress seemed pretty new and didn't know a lot about the menu or the wine list. As working as the marketing and events manager for a restaurant group in London, where I know how hospitality and restaurants are working this was unfortunately not the best visit at Lardo. visited LARDO on 26 Feb 2017

Highly recommended. My friend and I had one of the best fish dishes we've ever had, and while I had been waiting for him I got chatting to the chefs over the open plan kitchedmn. They were great - chatty, open and friendly (and gave me a couple of sneaky samples). Our sons also loved their pizzas so everyone was happy. Buzzy, high quality and wonderful food. I'll be back. visited LARDO on 25 Feb 2017

I always love a night at Lardo – the atmosphere is great, the wine and food (no surprise) is always delicious – the polpette, pancetta and radicchio risotto and potato gorgonzola pizza this time. The only draw back is that a table for 2 means you might be quite squished in between other diners, and it's often hard to get the attention of the staff, however these small points are all generally outshone by the positives. visited LARDO on 23 Feb 2017

Brunch didn't disappoint - except for the "Danish bloody Mary", which had a grayish slab of anchovy swimming in it, had the brownish hue of water in the bilge of a floundering Mississippi steamboat and, my Scandi fellow diner assured me, was about as Danish as a Krispy Kreme donut. It was nasty. The ricotta pancakes, on the other hand, saved the day. And the spicy baked egg thing with meatballs was tasty, tho a bit too lemony. visited LARDO on 04 Feb 2017

It was really not up to the standard we've come to expect from Lardo and we suspect either turnover in kitchen staff or a very off night. Clams with fregola were swimming in butter. Something advertised as frito misto you would imagine to involve seafood. It was actually fried vegetables in a poor batter and the oil was clearly both old and not hot enough. There were even deep fried celery sticks - what?! Frito misto (verdure) should have a light dusting of seasoned flour and semolina - not a fat-laced batter. Our pork ragu was thin and had no vim at all; homemade pasta was thick and should have been rolled a few more times. Even the catalana almonds were nothing like their former selves. All in all, pretty grim. I genuinely hope an off night rather than where this kitchen has ended up. visited LARDO on 28 Jan 2017

I booked a group table for a birthday as I have been many times before and really enjoyed it as well as telling a lot of people how great it is! Unfortunately the service recently was not brilliant as I had to keep going and getting jugs of water as our waitress was not attentive at all, even though the restaurant was quite empty. We ordered 4 pizzas, 3 with chilli and one specifically without. All four came with chilli, and I could see the chef and waitress trying to take them off the 1 pizza with a fork and pretend it didn't happen... obviously there were loads of chillis still in the pizza dough, and no apology or anything was said. I felt disapointed about the dishonesty, of course it was an accident but to try and blag it with a fork when the pizza is £14 not really what you go out to a nice restaurant for. Risky if they do that and someone has an allergic reaction.. Unfortunately there was just no basic attention to detail, jugs of water on a table is just the minimum and then it was a £30 service charge at the end which felt very extreme after that. A shame as it was one of my favourite places in East London :( . Maybe only go for dinner for 2 and not large bookings. visited LARDO on 25 Jan 2017

Scrumptious! I had heard a lot about the restaurant and was excited to finally visit. The reservationist was extremely polite on the phone and allowed us to make to make a few alterations to our booking without ever sounding frustrated, remaining friendly if amusing throughout. The interior is wonderful with high ceilings, exposed brickwork and the mirrors around the pizza oven added a livening touch. I really like the artichoke and aioli special, I would highly recommend that when artichoke is in season this dish remains a permanent fixture. My only critique was that when dessert course came round I spotted biscotti on the menu alongside gelato. I was keen to just have the biscotti as I love this as an accompaniment to my tea/coffee. The waitress asked the kitchen but I was denied the biscotti as there were only enough to match the number of potential dessert orders (inclusive of the gelato.) I might suggest stocking up on more as biscotti as these are always a popular sweet option and it is a nice touch to offer the occasional unusual or off-menu request. I look forward to visiting again soon! visited LARDO on 24 Jan 2017

I have always liked Lardo and wanted to take two friends who hadn't been before. I pre booked a table for 3 and when we arrived we were given a small table for two and chair was put on the end. It wasn't a great start as wasn't particularly sociable. We asked for sparkling water and they'd run out. Thankfully one of the staff moved us to a bigger table once he had found out that another booking for three had downsized to two so we took their table. After a while we ordered our food, one of which was the potato pizza. Sadly it was terrible. It has massive slabs of potato on top completely taking over the whole pizza, there wasn't any flavour or produce underneath really, just a dry hard base. There was so much thick cut slabs of potato that we couldn't eat it so after some deliberation we asked if it could be taken away and instead my friend ordered some burrata and croquettes. Lardo didn't charge us for the pizza which is good but it's a shame it looked and tasted the way it did as I had raved about your pizzas. We also wanted to order the black Annie pepperoni but couldn't as you had run out of black anise pepperoni. So all in all not the best experience on a Monday night! visited LARDO on 16 Jan 2017
