Description

Since its opening in July of 2012, LARDO is stylish bar and restaurant that has come to occupy the iconic Arthaus building and has been welcomed into the Hackney bar and restaurant scene with open arms. Offering a non-traditional take on the classic pizzeria, Damian Currie (ex St. John Bread & Wine and Zucca) follows the seasons of Italy, serving up a selection of Southern dishes in the summer and a move to the North during the winter with a menu that changes daily.

All pasta and breads are made in-house, and the charcuterie is made from Mangalitza pigs raised in Somerset and produced at Native Breeds in Gloucestershire. LARDO also serve a selection of classic cocktails, and boast an impressive wine list that can be served by the glass, carafe or bottle.

Perfect for an after-work bite to eat, a catch up with friends over a few drinks or a night with that special someone, LARDO is a chilled out space that tastes as good as it looks.

Nice welcoming in the entrance my manager, and always a lovely vibe at the space. I'm a regular that lives close and are a fan of the menu. Unfortunately it was very bad service for the rest of the night. As it was my birthday dinner this was pretty sad. The floor seemed understaffed as one girl mainly was looking over all the tables. We order some Olives to eat before the food. The order got forgotten and came at the same time as the food which made it pretty point less. Once the 3rd guest in our group just after we placed our order she had to wait about 30 min for her pizza (margarita) but we got ours way faster. And there wasn't a big group coming in between that space. The waitress seemed pretty new and didn't know a lot about the menu or the wine list. As working as the marketing and events manager for a restaurant group in London, where I know how hospitality and restaurants are working this was unfortunately not the best visit at Lardo. visited LARDO on 26 Feb 2017

Highly recommended. My friend and I had one of the best fish dishes we've ever had, and while I had been waiting for him I got chatting to the chefs over the open plan kitchedmn. They were great - chatty, open and friendly (and gave me a couple of sneaky samples). Our sons also loved their pizzas so everyone was happy. Buzzy, high quality and wonderful food. I'll be back. visited LARDO on 25 Feb 2017

I always love a night at Lardo – the atmosphere is great, the wine and food (no surprise) is always delicious – the polpette, pancetta and radicchio risotto and potato gorgonzola pizza this time. The only draw back is that a table for 2 means you might be quite squished in between other diners, and it's often hard to get the attention of the staff, however these small points are all generally outshone by the positives. visited LARDO on 23 Feb 2017

Service always great. Lardo's one of my favourite restaurants. But now I'm Vegan and diary's out. You was a bit stuck. Yard Sale does Vegan cheese maybe Lardo could offer this too? Not they need to plenty of carnivores, vegetarians booking it up every night. Ben visited LARDO on 17 Feb 2017

We had a lovely welcome. In general the food was good but the crudo pizza starter was burnt. The service was very slow and we were never given bread like the other customers even though we asked for it. Brunch didn't disappoint - except for the "Danish bloody Mary", which had a grayish slab of anchovy swimming in it, had the brownish hue of water in the bilge of a floundering Mississippi steamboat and, my Scandi fellow diner assured me, was about as Danish as a Krispy Kreme donut. It was nasty. The ricotta pancakes, on the other hand, saved the day. And the spicy baked egg thing with meatballs was tasty, tho a bit too lemony. visited LARDO on 04 Feb 2017

It was really not up to the standard we've come to expect from Lardo and we suspect either turnover in kitchen staff or a very off night. Clams with fregola were swimming in butter. Something advertised as frito misto you would imagine to involve seafood. It was actually fried vegetables in a poor batter and the oil was clearly both old and not hot enough. There were even deep fried celery sticks - what?! Frito misto (verdure) should have a light dusting of seasoned flour and semolina - not a fat-laced batter. Our pork ragu was thin and had no vim at all; homemade pasta was thick and should have been rolled a few more times. Even the catalana almonds were nothing like their former selves. All in all, pretty grim. I genuinely hope an off night rather than where this kitchen has ended up. visited LARDO on 28 Jan 2017

I booked a group table for a birthday as I have been many times before and really enjoyed it as well as telling a lot of people how great it is! Unfortunately the service recently was not brilliant as I had to keep going and getting jugs of water as our waitress was not attentive at all, even though the restaurant was quite empty. We ordered 4 pizzas, 3 with chilli and one specifically without. All four came with chilli, and I could see the chef and waitress trying to take them off the 1 pizza with a fork and pretend it didn't happen... obviously there were loads of chillis still in the pizza dough, and no apology or anything was said. I felt disapointed about the dishonesty, of course it was an accident but to try and blag it with a fork when the pizza is £14 not really what you go out to a nice restaurant for. Risky if they do that and someone has an allergic reaction.. Unfortunately there was just no basic attention to detail, jugs of water on a table is just the minimum and then it was a £30 service charge at the end which felt very extreme after that. A shame as it was one of my favourite places in East London :( . Maybe only go for dinner for 2 and not large bookings. visited LARDO on 25 Jan 2017

Scrumptious! I had heard a lot about the restaurant and was excited to finally visit. The reservationist was extremely polite on the phone and allowed us to make to make a few alterations to our booking without ever sounding frustrated, remaining friendly if amusing throughout. The interior is wonderful with high ceilings, exposed brickwork and the mirrors around the pizza oven added a livening touch. I really like the artichoke and aioli special, I would highly recommend that when artichoke is in season this dish remains a permanent fixture. My only critique was that when dessert course came round I spotted biscotti on the menu alongside gelato. I was keen to just have the biscotti as I love this as an accompaniment to my tea/coffee. The waitress asked the kitchen but I was denied the biscotti as there were only enough to match the number of potential dessert orders (inclusive of the gelato.) I might suggest stocking up on more as biscotti as these are always a popular sweet option and it is a nice touch to offer the occasional unusual or off-menu request. I look forward to visiting again soon! visited LARDO on 24 Jan 2017

I have always liked Lardo and wanted to take two friends who hadn't been before. I pre booked a table for 3 and when we arrived we were given a small table for two and chair was put on the end. It wasn't a great start as wasn't particularly sociable. We asked for sparkling water and they'd run out. Thankfully one of the staff moved us to a bigger table once he had found out that another booking for three had downsized to two so we took their table. After a while we ordered our food, one of which was the potato pizza. Sadly it was terrible. It has massive slabs of potato on top completely taking over the whole pizza, there wasn't any flavour or produce underneath really, just a dry hard base. There was so much thick cut slabs of potato that we couldn't eat it so after some deliberation we asked if it could be taken away and instead my friend ordered some burrata and croquettes. Lardo didn't charge us for the pizza which is good but it's a shame it looked and tasted the way it did as I had raved about your pizzas. We also wanted to order the black Annie pepperoni but couldn't as you had run out of black anise pepperoni. So all in all not the best experience on a Monday night! visited LARDO on 16 Jan 2017

As always, all courses were ever so delicious! The starter - fried anchovies - had a nice bite and was ever so tasty and moreish; this was followed by Pizza Crudo with a crusty base, the way pizzas should be; for the main course I had mackerel which was cooked to perfection and it melted in my mouth. The accompanying winter salad is definitely a hit with me! Highly recommend to all my friends. Thank you Lardo and keep delivering a great job! Zurab visited LARDO on 15 Dec 2016

The atmosphere of Lardo is great with a stylish and warm interior. However, we cant help but feel a bit let down by the service. We chose Lardo as a place for a special occasion dinner and were left disappointed. There was a real delay in our food arriving (2 hours after we sat down our mains still hadn't arrived) and when it did arrive, it wasn't altogether. Although the management were apologetic I think they couldn't cope with some larger booking as well as ours and we felt a bit forgotten. They did take £20 off the bill for the inconvenience but did leave on the 12.5% service charge which I felt was a bit cheeky. We had a much better experience at their smaller branch - Lardo Bebe. visited LARDO on 09 Dec 2016

I was extremely disappointed with the quality of the food. Hadn't visited the restaurant in a while and was very unpleasantly surprised to see how it has changed. Appreciate this was a Sat night booking but you also need to know it was an early one That didnt help the situation either We were a party of 3 and put on a table in a corner opposite the front door which was only really big enough for 2 people. This was proven by our server who was a young woman, we thought very inexperienced/possibly only new who proceeded to knock over my glass of wine and our water This really didnt give u a very good impression and spoilt our evening Pizza's were ok but not fantastic Shame really you wont be getting 5 stars on Trip Advisor visited LARDO on 26 Nov 2016

I'd like to thank the team at Lardo. Having visited a number of times and had an outstanding experience on this occasion we'd traveled back to Hackney especially to dine at Lardo and enjoy the lovely atmosphere and delicious menu of food and drinks. It was a busy Friday evening, we'd booked online but there had been a mistake which required us to stand a while for a table. The maître d' exemplified easy charm, making us as comfortable as possible. We ended up in our favourite seats, the waitress was lovely., the food and drinks were as wonderful as ever, we stayed longer than we should and indulged a little more than we ought and all because we'd been so well looked after. Thanks Lardo for a lovely evening. I look after Sutton House near Hackney Central and will be recommending you to our visitors. See you again soon I hope Chris and Stu visited LARDO on 04 Nov 2016

Service was very friendly but a little slow in terms of taking order and bringing drinks - we noticed the same happened to the table next to us, and a couple of mistakes were made with our order - including putting an anchovy on a pizza for a vegetarian by accident and then trying to assure us it wasn't an anchovy (it was) before finally replacing the pizza. The food was tasty, the staff friendly and the atmosphere nice, but the service and attention to detail ought to have been slicker. I was really hoping to enjoy this restaurant. I had heard it was good and it had been hyped for its trendy location and stylish settings. I was disappointed. Our waitress was distracted and abrupt, she plonked our plates on top of our still folded napkins and didn't look us in the eye once. It was clear she couldn't wait to get rid of us. The food was presented poorly, it tasted good but was fairly basic Italian fare. I regretted not trying the pizza as it looked pretty tasty. I caught the owner/manager tickling the waitress' bare back as she was bending down to take an order which i found borderline creepy and not very professional. All in all it hasn't lived up to the hype for me. visited LARDO on 23 Oct 2016

The Host was really lovely - he accommodated us last minute which was much appreciated. Food was gorgeous too - the pumpkin pizza and the potato pizzas were AMAZING! Muffin4 visited LARDO on 21 Oct 2016

Excellent, regional Italian cooking made with care, flair and knowledge. Portions are generous, the room is buzzy and fun and the service quite charming and (mostly) efficient. Never an off night - Lardo is utterly brilliant. visited LARDO on 20 Oct 2016

We were really excited to go to this restaurant. My boyfriend is italian and rated the menu before we went. the decor in the restaurant in great - a bit east london too cool for school but needs must so we got it and it was well done. Our waitress was very kind although too busy so it took us a good 20 minutes before we could order a drink and then almost twice as long to receive it. Out food actually came before the drinks which was annoying. The charcuterie was mean - couldnt have been sliced thinner and then served with nothing. Just meat on a board- we asked for bread. We then had a dish with guanciale again a really mean amount, with the rind still on and super chewy - rest of the dish was ok. For the main meal the pizza was overdone on top and underdone on the bottom and the spaghetti came cold. The wine choices we not great. Finally service was clumsy and rude at time with food being thrown down by one manager and the staff more into speaking with their friends. Probably wont go again. Suggest you save your money their are much better italians in town and/or cool places if thats what youre looking for. visited LARDO on 21 Oct 2016

Food wine and service very good. Wish we had more time to explore the menu. Espresso was a big disappointment. Very sour and nasty as mentioned to staff visited LARDO on 14 Oct 2016

Delicious food, big mixture of dishes, some unusual flavours that work so well together and also the traditional can't go wrong stuff too. Loved it will be back. visited LARDO on 14 Oct 2016

Lovely food but an hour's wait for the main course which meant we had to eat in a terrific hurry to avoid being late for the opera. Staff very inexperienced and ordering system appeared to be a shambles. tension over time ruined my evening and was surprising as we were told we could only have the table for two hours - it took very nearly that long for the food to come.

Lardo is an exceptional dining experience. The food is fresh and well balanced and, most impressively, it is truly original. It stands alone despite the trendy competition that surrounds it.

Pros: Only the decoration and the guy with the tache at the reception! Cons: The staff. Very nervous and very difficult to get hold of for ordering. They charged two drinks we didn't have and when we asked we got "hmm, are you sure?" for an answer from the waiter. Also we had to wait am unreasonable amount of time for our mains. I would go back only a mid-week day that I hope it will be more relaxed

Lardo is the greatest restaurant in East London; the food is always surprising and excellent, this time I ate sage and anchovy fritters and espresso and grappa jelly! The service is wonderful and speedy; the atmosphere charming and relaxing. My partner are I are hooked! richardbellafonte visited LARDO on 23 Sep 2016

Terrible, I took my GF there as it was her favorite restaurant. Took at least 35 mins to get our drinks ordered and delivered (beer and a Prosecco??!). the food was then another 25-30 mins, our mains came before our starters (although the food was great!) The waiter said he would give us the starters for free. We ended up just getting a free drink.... Took well over 20 mins to pay,... the other waiter looked seriously pissed off when we said we would like to remove the service charge... thought about leaving without paying. The manager was having a massive argument with the chef.... the chef seems to be in the right for what it's worth... Not going back. Ed visited LARDO on 23 Aug 2016

Great service. Food was good and not too expensive. Only problem was 2 hour limit for bookings, which also meant people were left standing around waiting for tables. Would go again joe49 visited LARDO on 25 Jun 2016
