We pre-booked as we know Thursday nights are busy. The lady who met us explained that it was busy, which was fine. unfortunately I think it was more down to the amount of team they had on shift as it took 35 mins to take our drinks order and 45 mins to take our food order. When the gentleman took our order we had to double check and it was written down worng- easy mistake, but when the drinks came they were also incorrect. Its a shame as the food was amazing and the lady on front desk seemed to be doing everything , including waiting tables and taking orders etc. They just need some more support. visited Smollenskys The Strand on 23 Feb 2017

The food was good, however 4 of us had the calamari and 3/4 people felt incredibly ill the next day. Also unfortunately our waiter seemed as if he didn't want to serve us and we were a burden to him, even though he is meant to be doing his job. He would constantly sigh and look miserable when serving us. He also got our order wrong and gave us an extra portion of fries and then proceeded to blame us for the issue and say 'you guys are making me seem as if I'm doing something wrong'. Understandably there was quite a large group of us and things were probably a bit chaotic for him but his rudeness was completely unnecessary. The restaurant wasn't busy so it was quite shocking to be treated like he didn't have the time of day for us. When looking around the restaurants other diners were to be waited on with the service we expected and deserved as paying guests. The whole experience was incredibly uncomfortable and we felt under pressure to just hurry up and leave in order not to disturb the waiter. If I ever return again, I'll consider going with a small number of people in order to not have such a poor dining experience again. I'm sure the restaurant isn't usually like this but maybe management should make sure all they're staff are treating customers with respect and ensuring they have a pleasant experience. visited Smollenskys The Strand on 13 Feb 2017

Lovely atmosphere as we arrived with the live piano. Our server was happy, friendly and was super quick as he knew we were going to a show. The food was tasty, well presented and a good price. Good choice on the pre-theatre menu. Tasty cocktails on a good offer too. Will definitely return in the future. visited Smollenskys The Strand on 22 Feb 2017

We were left waiting to order our food for quite some time. The waiter went by and said I will be with you in a minute but never came back. One of my party had to get up to draw attention to the fact that we wanted to order our food. Normally this would not be such a problem but we were booked in at 5.30pm because we were going to see a show at the Savoy Theatre so time was running by fast for us to eat. The ribs that we had for starter were quite cold and because we were now in a hurry we didn't say anything to anyone as we didn't want to waste time waiting for them to be heated up. There didn't seem to be any order of who was waiting on which section which seemed odd. Wouldn't like to be there when it is busy. We have visited this restaurant on lots of occasions as the pre-theatre menu is good value and the 2 for £10 cocktails are delicious. This was our worst visit to date and it was unfortunate that we were with our friends who we had told them how good Smollensky's was. Unfortunately this was not the case yesterday. visited Smollenskys The Strand on 17 Feb 2017

My fault.. I thought Smollensky's was a lot more upmarket than a burger and steak place so having booked a table we did not stay to eat last night. If I'd wanted to hire the whole restaurant it would - no doubt - have cost thousands.. but it was eerily empty except for our party. In the heart of WC1 at the weekend! I would be worried if I was the owner. The staff who were there were very charming but completely shambolic. Food was wildly variable. All served on stone cold plates. No atmosphere, very down at heel & tired. Real shame - used to be fun and buzzy. What happened? visited Smollenskys The Strand on 12 Feb 2017

It was a staff Xmas party, so I’ll give you some quotes from colleagues and then my overall assessment. “We were not able to go on elsewhere because we spent so much time waiting for our food”. “Wanted to get home early, got back at 12, after over 4 and a half hours waiting. Wish we went elsewhere!!!”. “The veg was cold and raw. I didn’t get my dessert, but I’m quite pleased because it looked like plastic. The service was extremely slow – I think that was strategy to get us to drink more, but even so it was slow in any case. My drink came in a warm glass. Would never go back no matter what month it is”. “Wow….they’re brave asking for feedback!”. I think that gives you an idea of the level of disappointment. My assessment? I think you were grossly understaffed. The servers who were on duty worked hard and it would be unfair to blame them - there were just too few of them. And the food was below average. Let me give some detail. We arrived at 5.55pm for a 6.00pm table and were asked to wait while the lunchtime crowd (it was almost 6pm!!) was cleared away. Once we sat down, we remained seated till almost 11.00pm – FIVE HOURS!!!!!!! Not by choice, I assure you. The servers just didn’t finish bringing our food till that time. And in the time we sat there, we were served lukewarm (but having waited that long just bolted it down, rather than send it back and wait even longer) and uninspiring food - and infrequent drinks. At one point we calculated that we had gone without drinks for nigh on 45 minutes. We’d have been better off popping out to Tesco, on The Strand, and bringing our own drinks. We were there for a party! So overall we were massively disappointed. But Barbara should be commended for trying to put a brave/smiley face on it all (and for offering a reduction in our bill, by way of apology). I don’t blame her personally. She and her servers were let down by the people responsible for staff attendance or recruitment. Overall a very poor effort. visited Smollenskys The Strand on 02 Dec 2016

Waiting staff practically non existent, the restaurant was out of wine & fillet steak that I was going to order. Say that, the rib eye steak ordered instead was quite nice. Wished for more professional staff (what exactly is the dress code ...?) that would assure we didn't have to wait for drinks orders for ages ... visited Smollenskys The Strand on 01 Dec 2016

I have never experienced such poor service in my life. The waiter was polite but had clearly never eaten out to know any kind of dining etiquette. Asking my friend to move her arm so he could lean on the table to write down our order (which he got wrong) and passing us a handful of cutlery to set the table ourselves were so poor it was laughable. It was also cold and we were not the only ones sat in scarves and coats for most of the meal. This isn't a cheap restaurant and I will not be returning again. visited Smollenskys The Strand on 30 Nov 2016

We have been coming here on our annual trip to London for years. A restaurant with so many happy memories...... WHATS HAPPENED? We were so disappointed this evening as we had such terrible service. It was like a different place!! The service was dreadful. All of the staff were just too busy be able to care. My 10 year old daughter was given the wrong meal and it took over 30 minutes to get the right food. Getting the attention of a waiter/waitress was impossible as they avoided eye contact at all costs. After being a loyal customer for many years I am sad to say that something has changed..... Its such a shame and no body seemed to care 😤 visited Smollenskys The Strand on 03 Dec 2016

The worst dining experience I've had in central London for many many years. Arriving at the restaurant there were no tables ready for us, we had to almost beg for the waiters to come to our table, the menu on the website was different to the menu in the restaurant, we were left with a jug of water for 15 minutes without any glasses to drink from it, and the food was just about edible. Left very disappointed with what I had thought was a London favourite. visited Smollenskys The Strand on 02 Dec 2016

Booked a table for 6:00 pm on 29/11 as a special birthday treat for my son who was 14. The staff couldn't have been nicer and made us feel very welcome. We chose from the Pre-Theatre Menu (available until 7:00 pm) and the food was fabulous! Great food, great price!! My son had ribs to start, steak with chips then banoffi pie - he knows his food and was really impressed. Staff very kindly treated him to a non-alcoholic cocktail which was a lovely surprise and went down a treat; his birthday dinner, theatre to see Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, and the background chill of the piano keys whilst eating some excellent food - all added to a great evening .... always loved Smollenky's and knew I was right about making my son's west end restaurant debut here. We live in Kent now but will be back soon as it's a fabulous place to eat and the staff are all and more to help make your time there enjoyable. Place was nice, it was quiet, but you expect that on a midweek night to be fair. Unfortunately, the food was average, but staff were extremely friendly, accommodating and service was on point. If you are a foodie, then you might want to research a bit more the area as I am sure that there may be better places to go where value for money is higher - this is not a reflection on the staff, I must make that clear, they were great. But I feel that if you have more plate than food, this is an issue and unfortunately, this happens a lot in places that have extremely high rents to factor into prices. Having said that, I did use a tastecard, so I didn't pay full price (I wouldn't pay full price for it anyway) and my dining partner said he would definitely bring his wife back there, so can't have been all bad! 3 stars from me visited Smollenskys The Strand on 23 Nov 2016

If you are looking for a short of American Diner experience than this is the place for you. Unfortunately it was difficult to hear the piano. My partner's food was great (fish cakes), my steak was OK. It was interesting that the place was probably only 50% full, but a party table was waiting forever to get enough wine classes. Booked online... Outlined special dietary requirements for my partner. Arrived had a drink at the bar, staff were friendly. We were then shown to our table, ready to order we were then told my partner could not have any sides except salad... Why I was not contacted when I booked this table to specify this I do not know. Apparently this is down to the sales team, very poor customer service. visited Smollenskys The Strand on 21 Oct 2016

Friendly staff but service very slow during a Saturday lunch. Food order was wrong, brought a beef burger for a vegetarian, but they were very apologetic and gave a free cocktail to make up for it. Venue was good, spacious and good vibe. visited Smollenskys The Strand on 15 Oct 2016

Great location, decor and atmosphere. Seated immediately. Server was very inattentive. Incorrect wine delivered, had to be changed. Starters and mains delicious. Peanut butter cheesecake nothing like described on menu – no flavour of peanut butter, no pistachios. Overall a nice pre-theatre visit but won't be returning. visited Smollenskys The Strand on 15 Oct 2016

My husband and I booked in for a pre-theatre , two course meal at 6 p.m. When our main course had not arrived by 7.10 we had to leave hungry! We did not have to pay for the bottle of wine or starter that we had consumed but this did not make up for the lack of food. We have been offered a free meal with wine next time we travel to London but have no proof of this offer, so we will see if they are true to their word. We were extremely disappointed -- my husband had to wait and buy a pasty at Waterloo on our way home -- I was past eating by then! suecleworth visited Smollenskys The Strand on 05 Oct 2016

We came here for dinner before going on to a show. We didn't choose the pre-show menu as we had allowed 2hrs for our visit (as per the booking suggestion). It turns out this was more than enough time. If anything we would have been fine with just an hour. The food was excellent - cooked just right and with the right portion sizes. The 2-4-1 Cocktail offer was a good idea however it would have been good to advertise that it is only applicable to approx 4 different cocktails. That said, we still took advantage of it :-) They did take a long time to come out and we had been served our starters before the first round of drinks arrived. Most of the staff were lovely. We asked for a different table when we arrived as I had specifically asked for a table at the edge of the room but was shown to one in the middle. This move was no issue at all and we were shown to another table immediately. We were then presented with a bunch of balloons for the table (I had mentioned in the booking that it was a birthday celebration). During our time at dinner we watched a young male waiter struggle to open a bottle of wine, and he eventually gave it to the customer to open! Later in the evening, he struggled again on another table and gave it to the PREVIOUS customer to open again! Seriously, if your wine waiter can't open a bottle of wine, maybe a bit more training is needed before asking him to do it in front of customers! There were a couple of waiting staff who looked like they would rather be anywhere else, but on the whole, the staff were lovely. The last thing I would mention is that over half the light bulbs were not working. This just makes the restaurant look unloved. We even commented to each other that it should be somewhere very high on the "to-do" list of the Manager. All of that said, I would come back again. cezza visited Smollenskys The Strand on 10 Sep 2016

Just went for a meal here on 03/09/16 after the theatre with my friend. We both had the 2 courses for £15.95 and decided to take advantage of their heavily publicised 2-4-1 cocktail deal. What can I say the service was APPALLING ! Considering the restaurant was half empty the staff couldn't look more disinterested and they were sooooooo slow with drinks - we'd already had our starter before they arrived. The next round of drinks took half an hour to come after ordering and the subsequent round I ended up going to the bar to order myself and they still took forever as the staff ignored me for ages ! Here's a tip- if you can't cope with making cocktails don't advertise an offer on them!!! Food also very mediocre and the bill when we got it was wrong - all in all rubbish!! It's a real shame as it has been recommended to me but it was terrible ! Emily visited Smollenskys The Strand on 03 Sep 2016

Was very disappointed. Whole place seemed disorganised. Staff seemed to have no idea what to do. Bar staff got our cocktails wrong. Restaurant staff wanted to serve dessert before our main course. Swapped a dessert as they didn't have what was ordered without telling us. Bill at the end had to be fixed. A real shambles!!!! Don't think it deserves a 1 star rating, but system says I need to award a star to give my feedback. Gary visited Smollenskys The Strand on 31 Aug 2016

Believe it or not, we ate at Smollensky's 25 years ago on our wedding day - just the two of us. We decided to celebrate our silver anni in a relaxed way by revisiting on Saturday. We found the layout slightly changed - I think the bar is now where the dance floor was?? There was a hen party having a great time next to us, which seemed fitting in a way. The food still hit the spot and we had a lovely evening before mooching off round Covent Garden. cherryjant visited Smollenskys The Strand on 30 Jul 2016

We held a hen party for 28 people on 22/07/16, from the booking / organising I can only say the customer service was second to none, so helpful. The actual event was stress and trouble free our meals were all served within minutes of each other and the food was absolutely delicious , the staff we so accommodating , welcoming and genuinely nice. I would certainly recommend the venue to my friends and colleagues . Jumoke visited Smollenskys The Strand on 22 Jul 2016

Went to Smollenskys as we've been before and seemed really good for before theatre shows. This time I had prepaid for a bottle of prossecco on arrival, I had to ask twice for this, once on arrival and again when it didn't appear at the table. One of the starters was late and everyone else had finished before it had arrived. Meal and drinks, especially happy hour offers were great. Shame about the late drinks and the starters. Had one of the best fillet steaks I can remember in a long, long time. A beautiful piece of meat, beautifully cooked. The service was good and professional, the speed great, I only give four stars not five, because the one letdown was that it was one of the noisiest restaurants I've ever visited. A great shame, because otherwise I wouldn't hesitate to highly recommend. As it is, if noise doesn't worry you, then nothing else at this wonderful restaurant will either. We had a fabulous evening at Smollensky's at the Strand celebrating my mums 60th birthday. The staff were extremely attentive and couldn't do enough for us all. Very disappointed with the whole evening. Went as two couples to celebrate both our anniversaries which we told staff which weren't interested when told. When trying to book left two messages on answer machine which were never called back. Food was warm at best and drinks very weak, when asked to have mine changed it was taken away and never returned. As we had recommend this to our friends it made us look silly as they never enjoyed the evening and would not go back. legend25 visited Smollenskys The Strand on 14 May 2016

Had the Express Lunch Menu here twice (not on the same occasion!) and it's great value. It's advertised on their web site and on A board outside the Strand outlet, but they don't offer the menu unless you ask for it. Oh, and both occasions got billed at full price. Whoops!

The pre theatre menu in smollenskys is very good value. Seldom you get a steak option on a Pre theatre but it was here. Desert menu could do with more variety. Otherwise great venue!
