Our first vulva painting workshop went out with a bang, and we were completely overwhelmed by the response to it. With many of you demanding more, we're going to continue spreading the vulva love beyond Valentines day, and have decided to make this a regular workshop at The Exhibit!
Curated by artist Babette Van Gerwen in collaboration with Dan Whiteson** (FreeForm Life Drawing), this workshop was designed to empower and inform those in attendance; to help spread the beauty of vulvas and ultimately destigmatize them. She creates a fun, liberating and creative environment where people can start to unlearn patriarchal cultures of shame and reclaim their bodies. As she puts it:
"As vulva-owning people, we are taught little to nothing about our own bodies. When I took the initiative to start learning more about the anatomy of the vulva and developing a connection with my own, I felt a revolutionary shift in my relationship with my body and self esteem. Painting vulvas was a way for me to connect to them in a way that actively resisted what society taught me; focusing on their pure, naked state without shame, and emphasizing their beauty, their fluid shapes, diverse sizes and colours."
After a brief introduction to both workshop leaders, we'll begin with a short history of vulvas in Western art and an introduction to the anatomy of the vulva. Then we’ll dive into expressive and representational drawing exercises before creating our final painting. To do this, we’ll be looking at photographs of diverse vulvas and simplifying them down into lines, colors and shapes to create our own bold and beautiful interpretations of the vulva in paint.
All materials are included so all you need to bring is yourself and an open mind! All genders, bodies and levels of creative confidence are welcome.

** Segments of the presentation (the art history and some technical sections) will be lead by Dan Whiteson, a cis man. He is a professional figurative artist and an expert in the field of arts education, with over a decade of experience teaching drawing, painting and the history of art, and his focus in this workshop will solely be to inform and provide technical assistance where necessary.

4. Occasionally, events are cancelled or postponed by the promoter, team, performer or venue for a variety of reasons. It is your responsibility to ascertain the date and time of any rearranged event.
