Scruffy Murphys Liverpool

Scruffy Murphy's is one of Liverpool's most energetic Irish-American bars — a concept that leans into the transatlantic kinship between Irish pub culture and New York-style dive bar energy. Since opening its original Harrington Street site in July 2022, the bar proved popular enough to warrant a second location on Mathew Street, at the heart of the Cavern Quarter, which followed in summer 2023. Both are operated by the Harrison's Bar Group, the team behind Abbey Road and Dwntwn.

The Harrington Street venue is the original — and the one to seek out for the full experience. Accessed via a doorway that belies the scale of what lies beyond, the bar opens up into a large, basement-style space with a distinctly American-Irish character. The interior is sport-themed and richly detailed, with artwork by local artist Paul Curtis adorning the entrance — including portraits of sporting icons such as NBA legend Larry Bird and Irish jockey Ruby Walsh. Multiple large screens cover every major sporting event, and the bar carries a strong draught selection including Madri, Coors, and Pravha alongside the expected Irish staples.

The Mathew Street venue takes on a more classic cellar-pub feel — exposed brickwork, atmospheric lighting, and a spacious downstairs bar that's ideal for groups. Both sites share the same DNA: live music seven nights a week, a pool table (free Monday to Thursday until 6pm), beer pong, retro arcades, and a karaoke format that puts guest singers on stage with a live band rather than a backing track.
