Description

It’s not everyday that you stumble across a pub hosting daily live monster shows. As daylight fades and the twilight hour approaches, this famed Edinburgh venue’s spooky spectacle combines lights, music, sound effects and an animatronic Frankenstein monster, which descends slowly from the ceiling. There’s truly nothing like it in town.

There’s plenty more going on away from the dramatic entertainment, too. It’s a great spot for food, with the freshest produce used for everything from the must try haggis fritters to a range of delicious saucy wings and indulgent burgers. Classic cocktails are a steal at £6.95, slashed to just £3.95 all day if you’re visiting between Monday and Wednesday.

Frankenstein is also a raucous party spot. Come at the weekend to find the tables swept away and live DJs dropping the party hits until late, and the pub hosts Edinburgh’s biggest karaoke night on Sundays running from 8pm until the early hours.

Frankenstein Bier Keller a perfect venue for holding large groups, private hire events and functions. It follows an Oktoberfest theme with long wooden tables, steins of premium beer and a German themed menu to match! There are a wide range of package deals available to make sure that your group receives the true Frankenstein experience!

Absolutely brilliant venue for a hen or stag do - staff were lovely and a really friendly room with everyone dancing on the tables! visited Frankenstein / Bier Keller on 17 Jun 2017

Not really what we expected in Bier Keller. Went for cologne package on a stag do, no German live band and DJ refused to play any German music. Having said that steins were good and dancing on the benches was fun, atmosphere definitely good. Could do with some aircon, bit hot in lederhosen! visited Frankenstein / Bier Keller on 03 Jun 2017

Great night and great atmosphere. Only let down and why I didn't give 5 stars was the food. Nachos were inedible due to the cheese sauce being solidified and cold by the time we got them. visited Frankenstein / Bier Keller on 29 Apr 2017

Good morning Calum, I'm just dropping you a note to say how very disappointed I was with the delivery off the food last night. Your poor waitressing team were mortified. We had pre ordered our food as discussed: to one help you with food quantities in the kitchen and two, from my understanding to allow swift delivery of the food as we had an allotted time slot and as a group we had our own plans. We had organised a time of 6pm with you. Upon arrival last night, the table reservation labelled 1745. The staff were helpful and drinks were organised. However, the food did not arrive until 1910. We waited over an hour to be served on a pre ordered booking - yet other groups who arrived later were being served first. When the food did arrive it was cold, both burger and chips. The chips were overly salty as well. For such a long wait the food was very very disappointing. When one of the other group organisers requested the team to bring out dessert with the mains, one of the waiters brought up the ice cream.... first.... ten minutes before we even saw the main. Dreadful. When questioned about this, your team although apologetic had the retort of - eat it or don't.... by this point we had very little choice. Due to the wait we also had to abandon our desserts. I'm very disappointed by this visited Frankenstein / Bier Keller on 29 Apr 2017

Fairly good. The food was good, and quite cheap so that's definitely a pro. Unfortunately we had to leave at 8.30 pm or so and I believe that's because it's part of the club's policy to remove the tables at 9 to have a larger dancing floor. I must confess I would have liked to stay a bit longer so that I could see the Frankenstein-based attractions of the pub in action. visited Frankenstein / Bier Keller on 16 Apr 2017

Having visited before we were expecting the same standard of service. Sadly this was not the case. Food was well below standard and dessert was laughable. To be fair when we spoke to the manager he did apologise and offer a reduction in our bill. Maybe we arrived on an off day but really there shouldn't be any off days in a well run establishment. visited Frankenstein / Bier Keller on 12 Apr 2017

Visited on a Sunday night. Food was good - tasty, hot and plenty of it. Karaoke was bit strange as the DJ didn't do anything to promote it for the 3hrs we were there , didn't tell people where to find song list and request slis etc. Bar and waiting staff fab, especially Calum. Though was starting to liven up when we left at 10pm. Would recommend it for Sunday evening entertainment. visited Frankenstein / Bier Keller on 05 Mar 2017

Bloody awful night! I was emailed the wrong menu so when we arrived the food package we were expecting wasn't even an option. Of the menu we were offered, half the food wasn't available. We booked the Bier Keller as part of a stag weekend and was really disappointed at how quiet the venue was. When we asked what time the band was on, we were told that there was no band. When talking to the manager, we were then informed that they do not have live bands on in January. None of this was mentioned to us previously and it is advertised on the web site that there would be a live band. A really disappointing let down!!!!! visited Frankenstein / Bier Keller on 28 Jan 2017

We used the Bier Keller for a private society venue that went really well! The staff was very help and nice. We were also about to plug our computer into the screens and speakers and play our own content. Prices were reasonable and would recommend to any group of 80-150 people. Lots of fun. visited Frankenstein / Bier Keller on 05 Feb 2017

Terrible. Booked for 18 people and they had no steak, no chicken and only 3 fish left our option was burgers. If I wanted a burger I'd have went to Macdonalds. Manager wasn't helpful and we ended up leaving. Won't be back. Lee-Ann visited Frankenstein / Bier Keller on 14 Jan 2017

Our time got off to a bad start when we only had one table. We were advised that 'someone must of taken my name off the table' and when i asked if he could simply ask the people to move from my table his response was 'I can ask nicely but i can't make them move'. I was really not impressed with this especially after paying £35 for our deposit. We did eventually get a different seat (not a booth but just a stool at the side) and after that our time there was okay, I understand that this time of year is busy but I did not appreciate how unhelpful your member of staff was. He also told my college to 'calm down' which was rather rude. Thanks visited Frankenstein / Bier Keller on 16 Dec 2016

Very disappointed.! Food was awful. We had the pre ordered 3 course Christmas menu. The starter was fine . The main came dry and over cooked it was obviously made in advance and reheated. One of us had the pasta main and it was totally congealed. We ended our night early and took our business else where. Won't be going back. visited Frankenstein / Bier Keller on 10 Dec 2016

We went to Frankenstein’s for few drinks and a meal on Saturday 5th Nov. The service from the staff was very good and attentive. The food on the other hand was a totally different experience, in fact it was shocking; we ordered 2 burgers, a hot dog and a steak, all of those arrived cold, literally cold! I asked the waitress to take it all back, she said she would get it all reheated, which really, in the hindsight, should have raised the alarm bells. The food came back in the next 5-7 min slightly warmer, my steak was no longer medium-rare, and the bread on the burgers was dry, one burger was totally burnt and impossible to eat. I called the waitress again and asked her to take that burger back to the kitchen. I have to say she was very apologetic and nice, of course it was not her fault and I did make sure this was clear when speaking to her. Few minutes later we were approached by the manager, who tried to assure me that the food was definitely not microwaved as this was against the health and safety, well my response to that was that rules do not stop people from breaking them and that the food was absolutely microwaved. He apologised and took the sorry burger off the bill plus applied 20% discount to the lot. Frankly I only went with this due to the fact that both the waitress and the manager were very polite and caring, however normally I would not even dreamt of being charged for the food that had to be sent back and returned the same unacceptable quality. I will not go back to Frankenstein’s for food, and not even certain I will for drinks, shame as it’s a great place but the chef definitely let them down. After this incident, we read more reviews and all seemed in line with what we have experienced ourselves. Question that I need to ask is; are those reviews being taken seriously? visited Frankenstein / Bier Keller on 05 Nov 2016

Booked a table for 11 for a birthday party. There was a bit of a mix up with the menus we had been sent, but the staff were amazing and tried to accommodate everyone's choices. The food was delicious and the service was friendly. The DJ is another story. I really don't know the point of having a DJ if you aren't going to take requests. He basically played his own iTunes playlist, possibly from his phone?! We only asked for a Beyonce song...Not the macarena. You'd think he'd be happy to play something for the only people in the place that were dancing all night long. Also a bit of a strange one...They kept taking away my water! I was the 'designated driver' so was on the soft stuff, but had to chase the staff a couple of times when they took my half filled glass off the table. What's that all about? So 2 stars off for being weird. What did I expect at a place called Frankensteins??

Similar story to the guy below, Booked about 3 week in advance for food. but when we turned up last Saturday night we were not allowed in. I was the first one to come up to the door and was told "not tonight" before I even opened my mouth, when I said I had a booking under my name he said "no you don't", I then asked to speak to the manager and was told "doesn't matter you're not getting in anyway". It was only after arguing and saying that I wanted my deposit back, did someone come out and give me a refund. Whilst I appreciate bouncers are there to stop drunk folk coming in causing trouble etc, I had only just left my hotel and hadn't at that point even had a chance to get a drink. Whats the point of taking a booking for that size of a group of people then arbitrarily not letting the first few in? (baring in mind I had been in contact with the manager back and forth the whole afternoon regarding the booking). All it meant was that it became a nightmare to find somewhere else at late notice for food. The whole situation was a complete farce. sweep visited Frankenstein / Bier Keller on 30 Jan 2016

ABSOLUTELY SHOCKING!!!!! I booked this in advance for my birthday with my friends and the only reason we went to edinburgh was to go here and we never even had a drink.... And the doormen said try somewhere else and we said we haven't even had a drink we have just been dropped off! So the other doorman came and he was a complete knob being sarcastic and stuff to us... So I asked to speak to the manager and he said no.... So I phoned... No answer and emailed and still no reply...ABSOLUTELY APPAULING NO ONE SHOULD GO HERE!!!
