Description

John Fallon’s “The Capstan Bar”, nestled in the heart of The Liberties in Dublin 8, is one of the city’s oldest and most storied pubs, with roots tracing back to 1619. Stepping inside is like entering a living museum of Dublin’s social history - original Georgian brickwork, a Dutch Billy chimney, and a back bar dating to the 1880s all contribute to its timeless charm. The interior is intimate and traditional, with low ceilings, wooden furnishings, and a snug tucked into the corner. There’s no music, and the TVs are only switched on for the occasional match, preserving the pub’s focus on conversation and community.

Now owned by Conor Linnane, who also runs The Dawson Lounge and The Belfry, John Fallon’s has maintained its reputation as a true Dublin institution. It’s famed for pouring one of the best pints of Guinness in the city - thanks in part to its short draw from the keg - and for its simple but beloved toasties served on batch bread. The pub attracts a diverse crowd, from students and creatives to longtime locals, all drawn by its authenticity and atmosphere.
