Bar 44

Founded by Welsh brothers Tom and Owen Morgan, whose shared love of all things Spanish sparked a mission to bring authentic tapas to the UK, Bar 44 has grown into one of Cardiff's most beloved dining institutions. The largest of the group's venues sits in the shadow of the Principality Stadium on Westgate Street — a former canal warehouse split into four subterranean rooms with arched brick ceilings that genuinely feel like you've stumbled into a bodega in Jerez. The bar area is all ceramic tiles and hanging jamones, while the dining room leans into the vaulted brick ceiling and nods to Bar 44's commitment to traditional produce.

Bar 44 is an authentic-feeling tapas bar serving classic and seasonal small plates, with the menu rooted in the brothers' travels across Spain. There are two kitchens — 'La Despensa' next to the bar for typical bar tapas, and 'La Cocina' producing plates more suited to the seated dining room. Bar 44 Cardiff is also the only venue in the UK that pours three different sherries from full-sized barrels behind the bar — a genuine point of difference for sherry fans. The wine list has previously won the Harpers Spanish Heroes Award for Best Wine List, and the venue proudly offers nothing but Spanish wine across the board.

The venue transforms depending on the time of day — mornings bring coffees, teas and homemade cakes, tapas is available from midday, and through the course of the evening it shifts into an intimate and lively cocktail lounge.
