21st - Sunjay
Born in Derby and now living in Brierley Hill, Sunjay is a guitarist and singer who bridges the gap between different genres of music. In 2012 he was nominated in the Young Folk Awards and the New Roots Competition, two years later he was up for a British Blues Award. His career has turned more towards blues, notably in the 2022 album, Black & Blues Revisited, a follow-up to 2015’s Black & Blues, where his vocal style is edgier and more emotional than previously. Sunjay has supported many of the greats, from Steeleye Span and John Renbourn to Mud Morganfield and Albert Lee.
28th - Chickenbone John & Ricky Cool
You would expect the Godfather of the
Cigar Box Guitar to come from somewhere like the swamps of
Louisiana, but Chickenbone John is definitely from Birmingham. He
has built a huge reputation for his high quality cigar box guitars,
has figured in a BBC documentary and organises the annual Boxstock Festival. But, having played
guitar badly in his youth, he decided to do something about playing
his creations, bought a Robert Johnson box set – and really
listened! Now, with influences ranging from John Lee Hooker and
Muddy Waters to Ry Cooder and R.L. Burnside, he brings the
authentic sound of
the blues.

7th - Roy Forbes
Roy Forbes’ enthusiasm for jazz started early, with a particular
devotion to the music of Nat ‘King’ Cole and the jazz/funk acts of
the late 1970s and early 80s. For many years he was the principal
singer with Andy Hamilton and has shared a stage with Scott
Hamilton, Benny Waters, Al Casey, Sweets Edison and many others. He
has featured at many international festivals as well as being a
regular feature of Birmingham Jazz and Blues Festival: Brecon,
Greenwich, Milan, St. Lucia and Marbella, to pick out a
few.

hero Honeyboy Hickling joins forces in a duo with legendary
Birmingham blues guitarist Bob Wilson, famed among other things for
his association with Steve Gibbons and his work backing American
blues veterans.
