DesignMyNight Awards 2015/16 - Manchester Winners
We asked you to tell us about your favourite pubs, bars, clubs and events in Manchester, and the response has been incredible. We’ve counted up the votes, verified them and checked ‘em once again, and now we're ready to announce the DesignMyNight award winners for 2015/16.
It’s been around less than six months, but the sophisticated Cottonopolis is already proving a huge draw for the city’s bustling Northern Quarter. Serving an exquisite menu of Asian delicacies and an eye-catching selection of Sake-based cocktails in a Grade II listed setting, Cottonopolis is a worthy winner of our Best New Venue of 2015 award.
Already firmly established as one of the finest restaurant and bars in Yorkshire, Banyan caps off a successful trip across the Pennines by winning our coveted Casual Dining award. Taking up residency in the Corn Exchange, head this way for a stylish dining experience characterised by contemporary vibes, welcoming service and a beautiful spread of food and drink served throughout the day.
Still right at the forefront of the North West's going out scene, Gorilla retains the DesignMyNight Best Club in Manchester crown. Welcoming a 600-strong crowd of party people underneath the rail arches of Oxford Road each and every week, Gorilla’s pulsating atmosphere and roster of top quality DJ nights makes it a sure-fire choice for a big night on the tiles in MCR.
How do you celebrate a venue’s 25th birthday? By giving it a £1 million makeover, of course. Dukes 92 might temporarily be closed for a refurb, but that hasn’t stopped revellers from voting in their droves to recognise their stunning outdoor terrace. Offering a relaxed environment and glorious views of the Bridgewater canal, Dukes makes for a stunning spot to kick back and while away the hours on those hazy summer days.
It was only a matter of time before Manchester’s very own bier palace made an appearance in our award-winning list. This bohemian hotspot - based underneath the city’s iconic Albert Hall - is dedicated to debauchery in all forms and delivers a first-rate Bavarian experience. Tuck into pretzels and cinnamon knots cooked up in the Schloss’ own bakery, dance to authentic live tunes and glug a pint of something delicious from the venue’s 900-pint copper barrels.
A pillar of the Manchester pub scene since way back in 1806, it’s really little wonder that voters awarded the Best Pub trophy to The Briton's Protection. Featuring tardis-like interiors and an inviting, year-round terrace out back, this traditional boozer is arguably best known for its vast whisky collection (there’s over 200 to pick between) and extensive array of local real ales. Hearty pub grub is served up from the kitchen, there’s a charming quiz night and a popular monthly Old Time Musical Hall sing-a-long to enjoy at this Deansgate gem.
Bringing tribal vibes and exceptional value for money to the NQ, Tusk simply refuse to make their Happy Hour deals exclusively about the booze, which goes some way to explaining why they’ve secured the gong. Offering two beers and two pizzas for just £10.10, as well as excellent discounts on cocktails, wine and beers from Sunday to Friday, Tusk saw off some pretty stiff competition in one of the hardest fought categories.
Taking home one of our most hotly contested prizes this year is The Fitzgerald, the Northern Quarter’s prohibition-inspired drinking den. Track down the secretive entrance, follow the glorious chandeliers and uncover the DMN public’s best bar of 2015; complete with low-lit interiors, live electro jazz tunes and sumptuous cocktails served in vintage glassware.
