Had many good nights here previously, felt the atmosphere was quite flat and music a little poor. Definitely wasn't the best night, although we were so in the mood. Hopefully, it was a one off blip? Hope it gets back to it's usual super fun night out in this spectacular venue. shazia visited Rouges on 10 Dec 2016

Been to The Rivoli numerous times and always have a good night, unfortunately the Xmas night was a bit of a let down on the entertainment front!! The two women who claim to be singers pretty much murdered every song and there wasn't a Xmas atmosphere at all. We previously came to the Elvis night in September which was a thousand times better. However, there was a large group of us who dressed for the occasion and danced all night long, we are not easily put off and always make the most of it so still had a good night. Always wanted to go to the Rivoli Ballroom and finally got my chance when I purchased tickets for the 70s & 80s Christmas Disco, however the experience left me with mixed emotions. The Ballroom itself is one of wonder and awe despite the fact it smelt dank and damp like an old cave throughout! Full of original fixtures and fittings of chandeliers, giant Chinese Lanterns and plush red velvet, The Rivoli is bold, large and ornate and can hold a capacity of 700 and tickets for the event was sold out. However despite this, I felt the night lacked any atmosphere. The crowd was a mish mash of different strokes, but it felt lacklustre and dull. The music played was as promised a mixture of 70s and 80s, yet the sound system was low and tinny and it was difficult to hear what was playing throughout and unless you were placed at the front of the crowded stage area, they could have been playing anything! There was no evidence of an actual dj geeing the crowd along, all I could see was a kid tinkering with his laptop and this added to the lack of atmosphere. The choice of songs were up and down and twice the music was stopped in order for two female entertainers to take to the stage to belt out a medley of songs, however they were sadly absolutely dreadful. Not as fun as a pair of amateur karaoke singers, these two sing like Tomcats on a night out. Ruining classics and then giving us another set filled entirely of songs from the film The Blues Brothers. Sigh! Been there done that! The bar wasn't much better! Staff were unfamiliar with the tills and couldn't use them correctly and mixers were from litre bottles and were warm and flat. At one point the head barman, an elderly gentleman dressed in his Sunday best of suit and dickie bow, actually began literary screaming at the long waiting queues of punters wanting a drink, to "Please Shut Up!" as staff were struggling to hear people's drink orders. Which in it's self was hilarious as the music was so tinny and it was simply people talking. The event was 8pm till 1am which was a blessing as I had had enough by then and was thankful to leave. All in all I was so excited to finally visit The Rivoli Ballroom and found it unique and charming, if a little smelly. But I wouldn't return to this type of evening run by Rouges unless their was major improvements to the small details that make up the enjoyment of an evening. Claire visited Rouges on 10 Dec 2016

The Rivoli is a lovely venue but what was advertised as a 70s and 80s disco and funk night simply wasn't - 60s and Blues Brothers tribute act featured heavily. Disappointed. Olga visited Rouges on 10 Dec 2016

We had a fab night out. An amazingly diverse crowd , and a stylish venue. There was a great atmosphere and no trouble, lovely staff and fun music vibe with singers, cabaret acts and live music. It was fantastic. The only tiny thing to complain about was the smell in one part of the bar which made me sneeze! i woild have paid another pound on my ticket to help renovate this incredible venue.
