Details: 18 January 2023. Doors open at 7PM, event starts at 7.30PM.

Unnatural selection — engineering new proteins to solve our biggest problems

Proteins are incredibly intricate nanomachines that catalyse chemical reactions, move cargo around our cells, relay signals, fight off infectious disease and do a million other things! Natural selection has resulted in a plethora of proteins specialised to perform these roles, but evolution is slooooooow. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could speed things up a bit, or do away with evolution altogether and design proteins from scratch? Hear about the recent explosion in research into novel protein design and its potential to solve the world’s most pressing problems.

Jenny Chapman has a Degree in Biology and a Masters in Evolutionary Genetics. Her favourite protein is clathrin, with dynamin coming a very close second. She splits her spare time between hula hooping and environmental activism (occasionally doing both simultaneously).

A Short History of Laundry

How did people keep clean before baths and showers? Answer: they didn't. But they did do their laundry. People didn't stink, but their clothes did -- and washing them was an exhausting, disruptive and often back-breaking job, almost always done by women. Learn about dollies, possers and other "labour saving" devices; stifle your revulsion at some of the constituents of early modern soap; and discover why nobody ate hot food on washing day.

Nick Higham is a former BBC correspondent and author of the first comprehensive history of London's water supply, The Mercenary River: Public Good, Private Greed, A History of London's Water, published in April 2022.

Can the Tofu Eating Wokerati save the planet?

Britain’s two main political parties are currently battling to convince the electorate that their parties offer the best prescription for delivering economic growth to a country that’s heading to recession, and where real term wages for public sector workers are currently lower than they were in 2010. We’ve all been brought up to believe that economic growth delivers prosperity, happiness and even liberty -but a growing body of academics, economists and social theorists are developing theories of ‘degrowth’- arguing that the endless pursuit of economic growth will lead us all to environmental catastrophe. This talk will explain why the anti-growth coalition is trying to lead us away from economic growth as a political imperative, and the theories that underpin the modern ‘degrowth’ movement.

Louise Inman is the boss of Nerd Nite and a recent convert to the degrowth movement. She has previously presented on the uber-nerdy childhood of Alan Turing, but was inspired to give this talk after reading Kate Raworth’s book, Doughnut Economics and ‘The Future is Degrowth: A Guide to a World beyond Capitalism’ by Matthias Schmelzer, Andrea Vetter and Aaron Vansintjan.
