The Story of Mae West

'Better Than Sex:The Story of Mae West' is a one-woman cabaret telling the story of infamous 1930’s film star Mae West. Written and directed by Emily Hutt, and starring Bella Bevan as Mae West herself retelling the events that led to the rise and fall of her career, and performing a number of the songs she made famous including ‘A Guy What Takes His Time’ and ‘I’m No Angel’. This is a cabaret to entertain but also to tell an important story of a woman who didn’t let the social constructs of her time stop her from having the career and leading the life she wanted, therefore being a source of inspiration still to women of today.

Bella is originally from Melbourne, Australia, where she completed a degree in musical theatre from Federation University performing in show such as Cabaret in the Spiegeltent (Helga & Fraulein Kost U/S), When Midnight Strikes (Zoe), 42nd St (Chorus), Brigadoon (Meg), as well as studying classical voice and violin. There she also performed her self devised Cabaret 'No Walls' at Ballarat's Post-Box Theatre, and Melbourn's Butterfly Club. In London Bella has performed in ‘A Temporarily Misplaced Cabaret’ at The Battersea Barge, ‘Kinky Kabaret’ at Freedom Bar Soho, and in the Bridewell Theatre run of ‘Care Not, Fear Naught’. Recent film credits include 'Normal' (short), 'Missteps' (short), 'Behind Closed Doors' (Art installation). Bella worked in marketing and Assistant Producing for 'A Lie of the Mind' (Southwark Playhouse) & 'The Red Lion' (Trafalgar Studios) which was nominated for an Olivier award this year, and has been working for Temporarily Misplaced Productions as Resident Producer since January 2018.

Emily hails from a small village in county Carlow, Ireland. She received a first class honours in Theatre and Drama Studies from C.I.T. Cork School of Music in 2016. Initially wanting to be an actor she gradually over the four years leaned more towards directing and writing side of the business. She loves creating the worlds either by directing from text to stage or sometimes through writing – concept to text. Her passion lies in strong female characters where in plays they were few and far between and telling true stories through the art of theatre.

Temporarily Misplaced Productions is a new London-based theatre company founded by Emily Hutt and Bradley Walker (author of ‘The Catalyst’), that uses their passion for story-crafting to balance the representation of minorities via fresh, dynamic and interesting writing. This company was created as a platform to produce new writing by young emerging artists, which show strong and multifaceted female characters as well as gives voices to minority groups.

"Temporarily Misplaced Productions has described itself as a platform for new writing, young artists and a voice for minority groups – I believe this piece delivers on this description."
