If you've been mourning the loss of Stoke Newington Road's Efes, then you'll be happy to know that Evolutionary arts Hackney has taken over, bringing an event space and modern restaurant, EartH Kitchen, along for the ride. Swapping the late night snooker and dirt cheap drinks for something a little more refined, the old Savoy Cinema has been given a multi-million-pound facelift. Expect a modern arts venue; home to live gigs in the old theatre space and a stunning eatery in the lobby of the cinema.
The brainchild of Chris Gillard (ex-executive chef of St John) and Auro Foxcroft (founder of Village Underground), EartH Kitchen focuses on pared-back dishes and seasonal produce. Think griddled ox heart, smoked haddock kedgeree and poached rhubarb with hazelnut meringue for afters.
Interiors are just as intriguing, with huge windows overlooking Kingsland Road and a striking curved ceiling. Not only is there space for 150 hungry east Londoners, but there's even a cocktail bar, with Toni Castillo (also of St John) at the helm. Expect classic cocktails and wines from all over Europe.
