Description
Opening October 2026.
South London has been waiting, and it's finally happening. Dishoom — the group that turned a love letter to Bombay's vanishing Irani café culture into one of Britain's most iconic restaurant brands — is planting its flag opposite Borough Market this autumn.
The new site sits inside the Hop Exchange on Southwark Street, a Grade II-listed Victorian building that once served as a trading hub for the hop industry. Rather than slotting into an existing space, Dishoom is carving out something entirely new: a two-floor restaurant in the building's West Wing, complete with a covered outdoor verandah — a nod to the beloved alfresco setup at their Shoreditch site.
Expect the cult classics that have made the group a household name — the slow-cooked black daal, the bacon naan, the Chicken Ruby — alongside site-specific additions and a full cocktail list. All-day dining means it works just as hard at breakfast as it does on a Friday night.
The group was co-founded by cousins Shamil and Kavi Thakrar, who grew up in North London in a family with deep roots in the food industry — their grandfather founded the Tilda rice brand after twice fleeing as a refugee. Shamil went on to study at Oxford and Harvard Business School before a stint at Bain & Co, while Kavi worked in finance at the International Finance Corporation before joining the family business. Neither had hospitality experience when they launched the first Dishoom in Covent Garden in 2010 — which makes what followed all the more remarkable. Borough will be their eighth London location, and with a New York opening also in the works, the group shows no signs of slowing down.
