'And the stars look very different today....'
This week marked the passing of one of the most iconic figures of the last 40 years. David Bowie’s staggering back catalogue of records and influence over countless bands who came to idolise him can’t be understated, and venues across London are set to pay their respects with a series of charity fundraiser events.
Here’s a selection of events and parties that will pay homage to this legendary musical icon over the coming weekend.
Bow Down to Bowie - Cancer Research Fundraiser @ Pop Brixton, Friday 15th January 8pm - midnight
It seems fitting to start with an event held in the heart of Brixton. Featuring visuals from Bowie’s most iconic music videos, funds raised at this completely free event will go to the vital work carried out at Cancer Research UK. Singalong to a playlist that showcases four decades of Bowie’s greatest hits, while the Ziggy Stardust and Space Oddity cocktails get flowing at the bar. Pop Brixton are, in their own words, paying "tribute to David Bowie, his decades of musical genius, his inimitable personal style and memorable music videos." Join a passionate home-town crowd and revel in this emotive tribute to the great man.
David Bowie Tribute: Labyrinth @ The Underground Film Club, The Vaults, 3pm
Keen to pay homage to Bowie’s big screen talents, too? The Underground Film Club has linked up with the LGBT charity Stonewall for a special screening of Labyrinth; the 80s fantasy classic starring Bowie alongside Jennifer Connelly. Head along to the Smokey Joe’s Bar beforehand - they’ll be playing Bowie anthems from 2pm - before catching this one-off screening where 100% of the profits go to charity.
David Bowie Special @ The Shacklewell Arms, Saturday 16th January, 11pm
You can expect another playlist peppered with classics from the Bowie back catalogue at The Shacklewell Arms this weekend. They’re hosting a party in his honour and donating all the proceeds to War Child UK, the country’s only charity dedicated to helping children affected by the devastating impact of war. Entry is only a fiver, and the aptly named Starlight Boutique Facepaint will be on cue to decorate your face in true Bowie style on the night.
Burn Down The Disco @ O2 Academy Islington, Saturday 16th January 8pm
Burn Down The Disco already had two Bowie nights scheduled, and they’ve agreed to host a third as a result of the phenomenal demand. Held from the O2 Academy Islington this Saturday night, head along for an overload of Bowie tributes - we’re talking all the greatest hits, Bowie masks and Bowie movie clips - in a joyous celebration of this icon’s life. Tickets are £4, and 50% of profits will go to Cancer Research UK.
