Get ready for paintbrushes at dawn, the Restaurant & Bar Design Awards have announced their shortlist for 2013. Into its 5th year, as the world's only event dedicated to hospitality design, competition is fierce. Some of the top architects, designers and operators from across the globe submitted their projects but only a few could make the grade. We've picked out the London competition from some of the top bar categories.
Best London Bar
Hugely popular concept bar Bounce has pinged its way into the shortlist with its mix of fun restaurant bar and table tennis proving, once and for all, that ping pong is cool. On the other end of the spectrum, there's some more exclusive bars such as Mayfair-based Colony Club Bar and The Crystal Club Bar. The Roxy's cheeky stripped back charm has also made it a contender on the list along with The Gantry and acclaimed restaurant and bar, John Salt.
Best Chain Bar and Club
With its Latin-flavoured colourful decor and caravan booths, Barrio East is an unsurprising entry onto the list. Its bare-bricked walls, exposed lightbulbs and cheeky slogans written on the wall have gained Adventure Bar Clapham High Street entry onto the list whilst Camino Monumento also makes the cut with its industrial ducts and vibrant wall murals.
Best Standalone Bar or Club
Bitter Sweet proves that the best things comes in small packages with its nomination. Take one glance at the decadent gold and purple hued decor and its worthiness is clear. Beautiful late-night cocktail bar and rooftop terrace, Golden Bee, also makes an appearance on the list as well as well as neon-lighted Dukebox in Chelsea.
Traditionally-styled pub Newman Street Tavern is on the shortlist this year for best pubs, as well as the more colourful mosaic-tiled and stained glass interiors of The Old Shades and Parlour. Industrial touches mingled with gastro pub cosiness and an added speakeasy style cellar bar also make The Tokenhouse a strong contender on the list.
