SATURDAY 13TH AUGUST
MAIN STAGE
ARROW BENJAMIN
Hailing from Brixton, London, Arrow Benjamin was a singer/songwriter perhaps best known for his vocal contribution and co-writing credit on the hugely successful single "Runnin’ (Lose It All)" with English DJ and producer Naughty Boy. The single also marked Benjamin’s first collaboration with R&B superstar Beyoncé. Benjamin was raised on a diet of reggae, deep house, groove, funk, and a whole host of other genres, clearly influencing his approach to songwriting. Not having grown up around any musical instruments, Benjamin trained and transformed his voice itself into an instrument, and soon began writing his own songs, eventually lending his creations to numerous collaborators including Major Lazer, Labrinth, and Rudimental. Referring to himself as "the midwife" for referring to his songs as "his babies," and his companionable nature, Benjamin eventually became the leader and principal songwriter of the Live Vynl production collective.
It was only a matter of time before Benjamin was drafted in to write alongside Naughty Boy for the aforementioned hit track featuring Beyoncé, which was inevitably followed up with his first release, the WAR (We All Rise) EP. Already compared to the likes of Gnarls Barkley and, in some respects, the Weeknd, the release features five original tracks, all of which both transcend and dip in and out of genres, moods, and styles.
STOOSHE
Girl group Stooshe are a vocal trio featuring Courtney Rumbold, Alexandra Buggs & Karis Anderson. These London Lasses broke onto the UK music scene in 2012, with an unconventional approach to the standard girl band formula.
Stooshe went on to achieve rapid success selling 800,000 singles and spending 6 weeks in the UK Chart top 5 with their 2nd single release 'Blackheart'. After charting in the top 40 for over 16 weeks 'Blackheart' received a nomination for "Best British single" at the 2013 Brit Awards, up against some of the biggest names in the industry.
In a relatively small amount of time Stooshe’s achievements spoke for themselves, touring with pop history’s biggest names, Nikki Minaj and Jennifer Lopez, closing the Mobo's, getting nominated for a Brit and having had 4 top 20's, 2 top 10's and a top 10 selling album.
Since the release of the last album the girls took a small hiatus to re brand, evolve and record new material. And the good news is... The girls are back! Don't miss them at Reverb this year...
RUKHSANA MERRISE
After years of being a songwriter for hire, Rukhsana Merrise's own enlightenment came when putting together the September Songs EP, which came out for free on Soundcloud last year.Lyrically, Rox is a reticent voice for her generation. “I just wanna be the truest representation of myself. I'm not trying to be a torchbearer. She cites the likes of Frank Ocean and D'Angelo as inspirations because they make their audience wait until they've worked out exactly how they want to present their musical truths. Whilst contemporary influences include Kanye West, Haim, Amy Winehouse, The Staves and John Mayer, Rox says “I like digging through my mum's music. I grew up listening to Fleetwood Mac, 10cc, Karen Carpenter, Joni Mitchell… Joni's when I found out that you can write about anything.” In terms of the current British crop, Rox has supported Jack Garratt, Laura Mvula and Leon Bridges – an indication of her unique approach to melding genres and sounds old and new to create something that fits her own individualism.
This year has seen Rox completing her debut LP and doing more shows, which she's more excited about than anything, particularly after a life-changing experience at Glastonbury 2015, a place she describes as “magical”. When it comes to being in the moment, Rox is feeling every second.
EMMAVIE
Emmavie is an incredible producer and artist from Harrow. With a mix of musical influences such as The Neptunes, Erykah Badu, Dorian Concept and more, she has formulated a unique blend of Electronic infused R&B/Hip Hop/Soul music that has really caught peoples attention wherever she has performed. Make sure you catch Emmavie at Reverb this year performing an intimate set...
SPANISH GARDEN STAGE
ARLISSA
Arlissa is a singer-songwriter of half German and half American descent, raised in Crystal Palace, London. She began writing music whilst still at school, studying for her A-levels. At 19 years old she was signed to London Records and then with Jay Z ’s Roc Nation. "I was writing and recording with a friend. He got some people from London Records down to the studio and they offered me a contract the same day.
"The label were playing my music to some people at Roc Nation in New York. Joe Brown walked past, heard the music and said on the spot, ‘I want her’. I flew out the next week, met Joe and signed a management deal.”
Arlissa’s track Hard To Love Somebody gained attention from a publisher, which eventually was passed on to Nas . After hearing the track Nas approached her to feature on it, he flew Arlissa out to LA in order to record the collaboration in person. On working with Nas, Arlissa said, "The whole experience was completely surreal, my ex was obsessed by Nas, and we used to listen to him all the time.""He just makes you feel so comfortable.”
"It wasn’t until I was on the plane home that I suddenly realised... I just did a track with Nas’. It’s been an incredible opportunity." Arlissa is only the second UK artist to collaborate with Nas after Amy Winehouse.
RAHEEM BAKARÉ
After a move to South London, Raheem Bakaré's life took on a whole new direction, fueled by his immersion in classic hip-hop from his brothers and the emerging Grime scene at the time.
In the years that have followed Raheem has steadily built his confidence and cultivated his sound in private, until 2014, when he was at last ready to unveil his talent to the world. It culminated in the release of his debut EP 'AWOL'. The eight-track project was a meld of R&B and Soul that marked Raheem down as one to watch in the years to follow.
