We spend about a third of our lives in sleep and perhaps a quarter of that dreaming, yet very little is known about the reasons for either. Although the body is passive, the brain is still highly active during sleep so something important seems to be going on. Is dreaming a bi-product of the process of memory consolidation or just the activity of a default neural network? Does dream content spotlight our waking concerns and can it be interpreted so as to reveal our unconscious fears and desires? Can it provide us with inspiration and guidelines for life’s decisions?

In this talk, Dr Glenn Wilson will address these questions and will investigate some of the more weird phenomena of sleep, such as sexsomnia and sleep paralysis.

Tickets £12 including a Hendrick's Gin cocktail.

Dr Glenn Wilson
Dr Glenn Wilson is a London-based psychologist specialising in personality, social attitudes and sexual behaviour. He was recently Visiting Professor at Gresham College, London and Adjunct Professor at the University of Nevada, Reno. He was a pioneer of evolutionary approaches to human mating and dating behaviour, attracting some hostility when this was unfashionable in the 1970s. In 1983, he introduced the 2D/4D finger ratio as a marker of prenatal testosterone, research on which has burgeoned in recent years. In collaboration with colleagues at the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences he produced a theory of the evolution of brain oscillations and has shown how brain activity relates to personality and can be used to identify sexual preferences. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society and makes frequent TV appearances in news and documentary programmes.

A Curious Invitation and Antique Beat
This year Antique Beat and A Curious Invitation will be hosting The London Month of the Dead, a series of 36 different events investigating the capital’s relationship with its deceased residents. Events will include a private view of the Museum of London’s bone archive, taxidermy workshops, macabre walking tours and private views and a programme of weekend death salons with talks on subjects ranging from public dissection and body snatching to reincarnation and funereal folklore. Each salon will feature a pair of speakers, authorities in fields such as osteology, forensic pathology and the paranormal, who will offer their own perspectives and insights on mortality in the city. Each year the London Month of the Dead donates 20% of all ticket revenue to one of London's magnificent seven cemeteries. In 2017 all of the death salons and concerts will be hosted at the Dissenters and Anglican chapels at Kensal Green. In previous years the month's programme has centered around Brompton Cemetery but the chapel is now undergoing important restoration work, a project the London Month of the Dead is proud to have supported. The London Month of the Dead has been curated by a Curious Invitation and Antique Beat to inform, entertain and provoke on the subject of death and London cemeteries.
