Description
KING KOFI is an up-and-coming rapper from North London, Islington. At twenty-one years of age, some of Kofi’s lyrics may have you believe that to some degree he is way ahead of his years, whilst on the other hand, his often child-like innocence comes across through his words and the tone of voice in which he delivers them - maybe even at times mistaken for naivety. Born Benjamin (Kofi) Daniels, the rapper’s approach to music is more similar to that of an indie singer/songwriter than a traditional London MC. Indeed, there are moments in the artist’s discography that would have a Wireless Festival crowd up in smoke, but for the most part, his introspective, sometimes melancholic, melodies and story-telling suggests that the London born musician is far more concerned with making sure that his listeners are able to relate to what he is saying, rather than creating the hottestrap song of that year; and if there is some sort of mainstream appeal to any one of his tracks, there is almost always a conceptual explanation or deeper meaning behind it. Kofi’s Apple Music playlist would likely surprise the average rap fan. Amongst the Kanye Wests, the Eminems, the Drakes the Skeptas and the Wileys, you’d find several ‘The Naked And Famous’ albums, LPs by ‘The Head and The Heart’, an EP or two by ‘Walking On Cars’ and standout songs by the Australian folk band ‘The Middle East’. As a result, the sounds that you’d likely discover in the rapper’s own material are very much akin to indie folk music and electronica, perhaps even with a rap inspired cover of a few of his favorite songs(namely Walking On Cars’ ‘Hand In Hand’ and ‘Waltz’ by the Naked and Famous) all of which the rapper seems to successfully makes his own with his interpersonal story-telling and/or intrinsic rap flows. Being birthed in North London, Kofi would be hard-pressed to ignore the aggressive, urban sounds of UK grime which is right on the 21 year old’s door step. Therefore, the artists’ open-eared approach to making new sounds work and come together marks for many of his fans a new era of British Hip-hop.
