Testimonials

"Our students found the class engaging and incredibly helpful. Karla was full of practical advice and professional insight which encouraged the students to take their work to the next level. A few have decided to become regular podcasters and found the workshop invaluable. I would highly recommend Karla’s workshop for anyone thinking about making podcasts or anyone looking to improve their practice."

-  Nana Fani-Kayode (Radio Production Tutor at The Working Men’s College)

"Karla provided us with the 'critical ear' we needed at a crucial point on the development of our podcast series. She also provoked really useful team conversations and helped us find new ways of arranging content."

- Christine Bacon (Artistic Director of Ice&Fire)

About Karla

Karla has over six years storytelling experience through her work at the BBC, Sony Pictures Entertainment and various indies. She is currently working as an Assistant Radio Producer for the BBC across Radio 1 and 1Xtra.

In August 2017, Karla's play Rupture completed a full run at Underbelly as part of Edinburgh Fringe Festival. "This play works perfectly", said Broadway Baby, awarding the show four stars. Another four star review came from The Theatre Guide, who said Rupture's "insightful narrative" provided a "frightfully macabre and realistic view into the future." Karla wrote, produced and starred in the show which also previewed at London's Theatre503.

Karla is developing a pilot for ITV Studios and co-developing a drama series for Lime Pictures. She is represented by Sam Greewood and Nish Panchal at Curtis Brown.

While a Production Trainee at the BBC, Karla worked in the script department of long running medical drama Casualty, working with writers and script editors to develop first drafts all the way through to the final shooting script. She also worked alongside the Script Supervisor and Director on shoot days, which allowed her to see just how the writer’s vision was realised.

It was during this time that she wrote her first play and submitted it to the Grin Theatre Company’s Young Playwrights Competition, which she subsequently won. Her short play The Blue Touch was staged over three nights in June 2014.

In 2015, Karla won an Ideastap brief, which resulted in six months of script mentoring with a Development Executive at Cowboy Films. Since then Karla has been longlisted for BBC Writersroom, Old Vic New Voices and Old Vic 12. She was also shortlisted for Theatre503's 503Five residency scheme.

In her role at Radio 1 and 1Xtra, Karla has worked with a whole horde of presenters including Trevor Nelson, Annie Mac, Mistajam, B. Traits, David Rodigan, Huw Stephens and DJ Target. She has also worked on Radio 4 arts show Front Row and has freelanced at BBC Asian Network and 6 Music.

Karla also works with Arts Emergency, a social change organisation that helps young people from difficult backgrounds gain access to the arts and humanities and pursue careers in creative industries. She also produces and presents a podcast on behalf of the charity.

In recent years, Karla has been a part of panel discussions and delivered talks and workshops for the Tate, Actors for Human Rights, the Trade Union Congress, One Degree, Camden College and, of course, Arts Emergency.
