London train travel is having a real moment right now. From the £100 million luxury sleeper touring the British countryside to Lumo offering a low-cost route to Scotland. Now, Eurostar is entering the chat with a bold new proposal.
Eurostar has revealed early plans for a direct rail route from London to Switzerland. If approved, this would become the first ever non-stop train link between the UK and the Swiss Alps.
Everything You Need To Know About Eurostar's Direct London To Switzerland Train Route
What Is The Proposed Eurostar Switzerland Route?
Eurostar is exploring a direct train service between London St Pancras and Switzerland, with potential stops including Geneva, Zurich, and Basel.
The plan would turn what is currently a multi-leg journey into a single, direct trip from the UK to the beautiful Alps.
How Long Would The London To Switzerland Journey Take?
At the moment, getting from London to Switzerland by train takes around 7.5 hours, including a change in Paris. A direct service would make the whole trip a lot smoother and shave off a decent chunk of time:
-
Basel: around 5 hours
-
Geneva: around 5.5 hours
-
Zurich: around 6 hours
Why Is Eurostar Planning This Route?
Eurostar says there’s already plenty of demand as London is the most popular flight route from Switzerland. The idea is to give a real alternative to flying, so you can enjoy a more relaxed journey across Europe. Not to mention, travelling by Eurostar gives you bigger luggage allowances, an onboard cafe, power outlets, and spacious seating.
When Could The London To Switzerland Route Launch?
Nothing is confirmed yet as the project is still in the early planning stages. It needs still needs changes to border checks, infrastructure, and agreements between countries before it gets the green light.
When it does get approved, it likely wouldn’t launch until the 2030s.
